Medical-Surgical to Recovery Room
I am currently looking for a change. My first and only job as a nurse has been my current employment working at a hospital on a medical/surgical/ortho floor for nearly three years. Although I work nights it still can be very challenging with pain management throughout the entire night, overnight family members, sundowning, alcohol withdrawal patients and etc. We usually have 6 a piece and sometimes are forced to have 7. There is a recovery room position open and I feel like it will be a little less demanding and stressful. Although all nursing jobs are stressful in their own way, I feel I will like recovery room better. What are some of the pros of working as a recovery room nurse compared to med/surg, and what are some tips?

Help with nursing specialty direction!
naptimeRN, I think you hit the nail on the head for me! The job you and your mom has would seem like perfect jobs for me if there be some positions open for it....seems as though people with those jobs keep them for a long time and there's rarely opportunities, but i will definitely continue to monitor indeed and monster. Just applied to a family doctor's office and assisted living facility...wish me luck!

Help with nursing specialty direction!
My top three interest in clinical were pre op for same day surgery, health department, and home health. I understand that stress is everywhere, but I'm sure some jobs are better than others. You are so right, i feel like our floor gets all the "dump off".

Help with nursing specialty direction!
I currently have been working on a medical surgical floor for almost a year (my first RN job) and honestly it's not my cup of tea, and I'm very unhappy with it. I love my coworkers, the 3 12 hour shifts a week and the pay, but the job itself is not for me.... Along with my nursing degree, I have a bachelors in health education. My perfect job will be something with low acuity patients, low stress, routine and predictable days. Which nursing fields should I direct my focus to? Please HELP!

Gastroenterology vs. OR
I've been working in Med-Surg for about 6 months now. It's my first job as a nurse since graduating last spring. There is an opening in outpatient gastroenterology and OR (pre-op and circulating nurse). I would strongly like to move on from med surg (because i feel its not for me) but not sure which one I should apply to because both interest me. I would like to hear experiences from others and what to expect from both.

Need HELP with matching my personality to a specific nursing area
I recently passed the boards in June 2013 to become an RN...yay! I accepted a med/surg position at a hospital working nights...another yay. I'm about 6 weeks in and I still feel like a fish out of water, and its a very discomforting feeling. I've never done any clinicals at this hospital and I feel like I'm falling behind compared to my fellow recent grad counterparts who were hired the same time as I. Sometimes I find myself overwhelmed with just 5 patients, but my preceptor tells me I'm doing just fine and that it will take at least a year to get in a comfort zone. There's just so many protocols to remember at a hospital, and not to mention our doctors still paper chart orders. I want to stick it out and not quit but some days I feel like I know nothing! I'm a type of person who likes routine and knowing what to expect everyday when I arrive. I like consistency in a controlled environment and find comfort in routine tasks. I can be a bit shy, i'm very free spirited and kind, and i don't like working in a fast paced environment. Deep down I know I should probably stay since there's so much learning that can evolve, but at the same time I wonder will my personality be better at a doctors office, clinic, health department, high school, etc. What do you propose? I want to feel confident in my abilities but its hard when you feel like you still have soo much to learn!
