Pediatric Home Health Experience
Hi Alex Egan, Thank you for the response! Moving to higher acuity cases is definitely on the plan. As of right now I am on lower acuity cases because of the lack of experience. However, once I'm comfortable then for sure I'm going to ask to be trained on trachs and vents. I am in Dallas, TX and since I've applied to most of the places here I'm going to try somewhere further out once I get my BSN and PALS. Hopefully that will help with my hospital search. Again thanks for the advice, it was truly appreciated!

Pediatric Home Health Experience
That is actually on the plan Caliotter3. Once I'm comfortable with handling kids better my plan is to get trained on trachs and vents then take those types of cases. I'm just not sure when but maybe around March. Again thank you Caliotter3 for helping ease my worry about this!

Pediatric Home Health Experience
Hi Caliotter3, thank you for the response! I do believe that I am on the right path. I just hope that when I am ready to apply at pediatric hospitals they just don't see the termination part of my nursing career, but rather the other parts too. Thanks again!

Pediatric Home Health Experience
Hello fellow nurses! So I currently work for a pediatric home health agency as a private duty nurse and just started working on December 2017. My case is level I, which means my kid has g-tube (level 2 are trachs and level 3 are ventilators). The agency started me with a stable kid because I have less than 1 year of experience. I was terminated from my hospital after my internship because of performance issues, which goes in hand with patient safety. I have not done anything to endanger my patients at all it is time management and workload that got to me. I guess I was not cut out to be a med/surg nurse. However, I have always loved working with kids. Anyway, I am currently enrolled at a RN-BSN program and should be done around May/June of 2018. I'm also planning to get my PALS in a few months (already have ACLS and BLS). So, my question is will pediatric hospitals even consider me for a position based on home health experience? I'm planning to stay with the agency until I get my BSN, but I'm worried that hospitals would not even look at my resume despite the BSN because my when I apply my experience would be less than 1 year in general and even less in pediatrics. Thoughts, advice, and comments would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

What can I do with pediatric home health experience?
Hi Peak Rn! Thank you for replying! I am currently in a RN-BSN program and I have 3 classes left till I'm done. The reason I was terminated was because of time management and prioritization. Which I can agree because it was hard to keeping up with meds, procedures, doctors orders, and usually something else comes up. I just wish they had given me the option to quit rather than being fired so it wouldn't look so bad. Anyways, have appllied to the hospitals in my area. So I guess I should stop and focus on home health then try again for some time. Thanks again!

What can I do with pediatric home health experience?
Hi folks! So I was terminated the hospital that I had a med-surg internship with almost after the internship. Also, I got my license on February 2017 (a little background info). I had been looking for a hospital job since then, but the LTACH or Rehab places that I interviewed with never called me back. So, I tried pediatric home health and I said yes. No contracts and they provided me with 2 days of training with the family and a senior nurse. They also asked of how comfortable I am with the family and child and if I want another day of training they would have arranged it. I declined the 3rd day training. It's been 2 days since I've and I'm liking it so far because the child is stable with a mickey button and mom is always there if I need help. However, I still want a hospital job. I'm still applying to hospitals and facilities, but so far no call backs. Real Question: How long should I stay in home health for hospitals to even just look at my resume or at least consider me for a position? I'm ok working with peds or adults. One of the home health nurse who trained me said that I should work with cases/kids who are have trachs and vents, so I can get an exposure on it. Then once I'm comfortable apply for pediatric nursing. I'm not limiting myself to pediatrics because I like working with adults too. Advice, tips, or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!!!

Continue home health or not after being fired from nursing internship?
Thank you for responding! I have applied to what I can. I had an interview a few weeks ago with an LTACH facility, but no call back. I had a phone interview with a small facility for a med-surg floor a few days and I'm just waiting to see if they'll call back. I've applied to outpatient dialysis facilities, med-surg positions, and clinics and no calls. I have not tried hospice, so I'll try that next. I'll think about it some more if I should quit the pediatric home health job. Thanks again!

Continue home health or not after being fired from nursing internship?
Hello folks, I need some advice. I received my license on February 2017 and my internship on June and was let go from the med-surg floor after the internship due to performance issue like prioritization and time management. I am working on my RN-BSN right now and I have 4 classes left. I have moved on and I currently work in a sandwich shop. I applied for a pediatric home health and started training this week. I have 2 days of training and the 2nd will be next week. The family and the kid were very nice people, but there is that nagging feeling that I don't feel confident about this. I felt rushed and the company wanted me to start asap after the 2 day training. Paper charting was a mess and I fear for my license. However, having experience is better than none? Is that true? I was thinking of leaving the home health care and working at the sandwich shop and finish my BSN program. Also I was planning to volunteer at a church based clinic so I don't lose all of the skills that I learned from my internship. I'm applying to all different positions in my state and I had a phone interview and face to face interview but 2 weeks have gone by and no call back. I did tell them that I was let go from my internship and I'm guessing that is the reason, but I have hope! So, should I quit home health or stick out? Any advice would be awesome! Thank you so much!!!

Forever an Intern?
Hello, Thank you for replying! I am definitely more confident compared to when I started. And I will rely that to my floor manager. My concern is their response if they don't see it that way. When I was told that I was going back to day shifts I felt disappointed because I felt like nights would better for me. So on the upcoming meeting I will tell them if there is any openings at night at all I would take it. And just like you said I hope they won't let me go because I want this to work so badly!!! Again thank you for the comment!

Forever an Intern?
Hi Folks, I am a brand new nurse and I just recently finished my hospital internship in the med-surg floor. I was struggling at first because the day shifts in the floor is so hectic that I barely had time to think at all. New orders were firing all at once, sugar checks, patients in and out of procedures, post-op patients, and so much more. I felt like I was drowning and there were times that I wonder if I can make it for 2 years in my floor. Then they suddenly extended my internship for 2 more weeks, which I believe was a good thing. I was still having a hard time with time management and some safety concerns. For example, I was giving blood and some of it backed up in the saline bag because I left the saline clamp open. So, I talked to the nurse educator and floor manager about my preceptor's concerns and my concerns as well because I was so scared that I am going to hurt my patients and lose my license. So, they moved me at night with a new preceptor. Again my internship was extended for two more weeks for the night shifts. It was great at night because I was able to think better and less chaotic plus my preceptor is so sweet and taught me nursing skills that my day preceptor could not because it's so crazy in the day. However, I was told by the floor manager that I am going back to days because there are too many nurses at night and not enough during the day. I said I was ok with it and my night preceptor actually did a day shift with me because she wanted me to utilize her as much as possible. Again very kind of her to do that. Now I was suppose to start a shift on my own in a few days, but again I received a phone call from my floor manager and he decided to have a meeting with me and my preceptor before starting on my own. I feel discouraged that I am still not own compared to the other interns who started on their own a month ago. I feel like I am forever interning, however I do appreciate that my hospital is supportive to ensure that I can truly take care of patients. It's just that I feel like I am never going to be on my own and I feel incompetent. Let me know what you guys think about my situation!

BSN or ADN
Hello! Ok so I'm taking classes in a community college right now for nursing pre-reqs for the El Centro ADN program and the TWU program. I can't decided which route I should take. The problem is financial wise. I don't have a lot of money saved up for the TWU BSN program while financial aid covers the El Centro program expenses. I can apply for scholarships, but those aren't guaranteed. I'm so worried because I've heard some people and most nurses I talked to say that it's best to just get your BSN because hospitals are requiring their bachelors. Also I plan on getting into the El Centro nursing program in Spring 2015. I'm worried about job security for ADN! I need advice on what to do please! Also can anyone tell the cost of attendance for TWU nursing program, just the 2 years expense. Thank you very much!!!
