  1. I was recently terminated after what feels like absorbing the error and negligence of a physician. Because of the situation and how betrayed I feel in general I decided not to go back to get another job. Now I'm being made to fight for something I don't want because I don't want it taken from me. I don't have $4,000 for a retainer for a lawyer. Does anyone have good resources for going up against the board yourself? I've never been in trouble for anything in the 7 years I've been a nurse. I feel like it's easily explainable to the point that if I was actually asked what happened I wouldn't have gotten fired or reported. What would you do?
  2. I have to wonder what you mean by “incompatible with holding a nursing license” To me, telling anyone these days that what they do off the clock under the guidance of physicians makes them less then and they shouldn’t be a nurse isn’t a reflection of objective fact, but of social stigma. Of course no responsible professional would consume and be under the influence at work but what people do at home is their own business. Especially if it’s for medicinal purposes. I really do hope the US catches up and reschedules cannabis so we don’t have to deal with the archaic policies surrounding it. I also found that the Texas BON only warns against “intemperate use of substances” which seems intentionally vague. I’ve even emailed them to ask specifically for updated guidance to no avail.
  3. I am a 100% disabled veteran with ptsd currently working successfully as an RN. I am wondering what the implications are for prescribed cannabis use under the care of a physician for disabled RNs. I was under the impression that unless it’s federally legalized even with a prescription for it we can’t legally consume it. Of course this goes without saying that people don’t consume it on the days they work and provide patient care. This is specifically a question about Texas law. I’ve perused the BON and it’s so dense with information it’s hard to find what I’m looking for. I’d like to start travel nursing and I know there will be drug tests. I’m not worried about testing positive for the other medications I’m on because they’re federally legal and I have a prescription.
  4. I'm thinking that night shift work is going to be the best option. If I need to hire someone to stay with my kids for 1 hour a night I will. My husband works a 7 to 7 or 8pm job so obviously if I'm leaving at 630 for my night shift someone would have to be there. I think that is much more feasible than trying to find the perfect unicorn shift. Lots of people do night work and are fine. I'm sure I can do it for 3 days a week. This will be different than when I was in the military. Thanks for talking this through with me. I have an interview tomorrow and I'm much more optimistic.
  5. Christus Versant residency starts at $24.80 hourly.
  6. I am not limiting myself to any specialty. If I have to work in a nursing home I will. Like I said, I am willing to take my time and research and be patient. I don't want to job hop. But I'm definitely looking into the possibility of a nanny that can retrieve my kids from daycare/school on my work days.
  7. I really don't want to come across as difficult to work with. However if I don't get the right schedule then I most certainly will have issues. And I can't do night shift. I get really sick doing that. I had to do that in the army a few times and my immune system just tanked.
  8. Maybe I can have a traditional hospital job and instead of working thurs thru sat i can work the same days my husband does and find a nanny to pick up my kids and take them home. That way my husband and I will have the same days off. Thank you for your responses. I will be negotiating in my head for quite some time!
  9. That's why I was asking about places that would have those hours. I know I can't go to a hospital that normally does 7 to 7 shifts and ask for 7 to 4 hours.
  10. I am graduating in less than a month. I have 2 kids, they are 4 and 5 years old. My 5 year old is starting kindergarten in the fall while my youngest stays in daycare. Daycare center is open 630am to 630pm and the elementary school is 750 to 250. My husband works 4 days a week, 12 hour shifts, with absolutely no chance of variation in the schedule. That leaves me with few options. I can hope that a hospital will *only* schedule me Thursday, Friday, Saturday. Then I will never see my husband. This is not ideal or realistic. Or, I can find a Monday through Friday job with daytime hours. I don't even know what options there are for my oldest. If she gets out at 250pm... I am not sure about after school programs to stretch it out til 4 or 5pm... We don't have family help or friends. I don't know my options or where to find information regarding this. My husband works from 730 am to 730pm. I am also a lactation consultant. I thought I'd want to work labor and delivery but I don't think I want to anymore. I have an interview for a hospital residency program that requires a 2 year contract on Thursday. I have to be up front about my requirements because I'm not going to sign a contract if the schedule won't work for us. What else can I look for? I don't know of many options that aren't in a hospital. I guess there are doctors offices, urgent cares, stuff like that. Is there any suggestions for me out there? Will working at these job places hurt my salary? The hospital residency program starting pay is 24.80 an hour, I'd like to not go below that. I'm going to be a new grad but I have other medical job history and credentials I had hoped would protect or boost my starting pay. I hope this post made sense and didn't sound like a complaint. I just want to find the right job. I don't want to job hop because things don't work out. I am not in any desperation to find a job right away, so I really want to take the time to research this.
  11. Just found out my physical assessments and stats class meets the requirements! I am so relieved.
  12. Thanks so much do the reply! Trying not to get discouraged about the 2 classes. I did get a response and she said it looks like they probably will be allowed, but to send in the syllabus just in case. My health assessments class was also 2 credits but it had a 2 credit clinical component attached so fingers crossed! And I for sure meet the experience requirement, I don't have to be an RN for a year, just an IBCLC!
  13. I will be applying to Frontier, and they do not require you to have that specific experience. As they put it, working as an RN in L&D is not the same as being a CNM so don't dwell on it. The experience helps you on a personal level, but for that program it won't make or break you.
  14. I am graduating my BSN program THIS May. I've always had in my heart to become a CNM, but as many of you know, it is dependent upon your GPA during the program. So I am happy to say that I will have above a 3.0 and will be able to apply! A few questions.... I took a research/EBP class in my BSN program and I'm hoping it will be accepted for the statistics requirement. I *did* send an e-mail to admissions about this and am anxiously awaiting a response. Any info on this would be appreciated. Is this a difficult school to get into? If I meet and surpass all of the prerequisites, do I have a good chance? Should I work as an RN while I am doing the didactic work? Is this possible or is it recommended to not work? I am already an IBCLC and am familiar with the online course work and then clinical in my hometown as this was the format for my LC school as well. If I *do* work, will I be able to go down to part-time or take a leave during the last bit of clinical? I am not sure how a future employer would feel about investing in a new RN only for me to take leave for school and then not stay for long. (unless I become a CNM for that organization) I will be scouring the internet attempting to get more answers and experiences. Thanks for reading!
  15. I'm coming back to thank this particular thread for opening my eyes to vaccines.
  16. Y'all are so lucky! You guys found out 2 weeks earlier than we did. Congratulations!
  17. TexRN replied to KayceeLeeRN's topic in Ob/Gyn
I did pathway 2 through UCSD Hybrid LC program. It is 300 supervised clinical hours from October-April-ish. You get 120 hours of Lactation specific ed. I just sat for the exam this year and am hoping to get the results this month! I think there would be good job opportunities where you're at. Remember, there are only 27,000 (ish) IBCLCs in the WORLD, so it's not like there is enough!
  18. Reading the book word for word is inefficient. Does the instructor have an outline or course objectives?
  19. Congrats everyone!!
  20. The only thing that pops out to me is the two tone nature of your hair color. Those two colors are natural, but the two toned of it might be inappropriate.
  21. My classes list learning objectives for each week. We also have learning outcomes. Both are pretty much the same thing and guides our reading pretty precisely. I've done it this way and just got 100% on my first quiz. Turn the learning objective into a question and answer it.
  22. I don't know how the accelerated class does it. Traditional already seems accelerated. The amount of work is incredible and it's only the second week!
  23. No you don't. But I have HMOx and opted to have the student health insurance because it's PPO and then I could use the student health center.
  24. What I learned -Enthusiasm will be mistaken for being bossy and overbearing. -The classes are kept at 32 degrees. -Every laptop will have an issue. -My school included a gym membership but I don't need it because it takes 20 minutes to walk from my car to the library with 40lbs on my back. Tomorrow is my 4th day, I didn't have classes today but I spent 7 hours studying patho. One class.
  25. The computer is not part of the tuition, it is separate. The health insurance is part of the insurance though. Tomorrow is my 4th day, and I spent 7 hours studying in the library today for patho.
