Hi there, RN here who is interested in case management or utilization review. I have done two and a half years on med-surg, and am done with acute care. LTC didn't work out for me (lasted a month as a new grad). Looking for a steady weekday job, NO MORE NIGHTS, no holidays, maybe not today but hopefully some day SOON. Just curious--how does one gain experience in this field? I have been looking, and there ARE positions out there, but most say 3-5 years experience in nursing and experience in either case management or utilization review. I'm wondering if home health may be my next step? Did I mention I'm done with acute care? The pay and benefits are NOT enough to keep me there. Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi klone, what I mean is, am I being paranoid in my thinking that I may after all end up interviewing for the same position as the other nurse? Like I said, there are more than one positions available in mother/baby, but I think it's suspicious that my coworker has not heard back yet. I would feel bad because I know that she too really wants to move into mother/baby. I know I didn't state this before, but I would also feel bad because she applied before I did, albeit I applied for a position that posted well after the time she did, by about 3 weeks. My apologies for the long post, I just want to clarify. I I appreciate the feedback so far. Thank you!

It seems inappropriate and unsafe to me. Do you have a union where you work? If so, I would find a rep and have her/him present with you to speak with your manager. If not, I would file some kind of grievance and try to get other staff to do the same if that's true for them too. Power in numbers, as they say.

Hello fellow nurses, Tomorrow I interview for a position in post partum within my hospital. I feel pretty confident because I do have experience with my past job at a rural hospital, and I feel as though I have good overall experience for it, especially since I currently work on a surgical floor and have the post op experience to boot, so I feel very comfortable with managing bleeds, what to look for, etc. Full time mother/baby positions just started opening up so I decided to jump for it. I am very interested in and love OB/GYN--it is why I got into nursing. My dilemma is this: there is another nurse on my floor who also wants to do OB nursing, and she has been there for two years (more than my mere 8 months at the facility). She recently interviewed for a position within mother/baby, and has yet to hear back. From what I understand, she interviewed for a position that is more of a float within the department, and what I am interviewing for is post partum specifically. But I am scared that I will end up interviewing for the same position, and given that I have experience in the area, I may have the upper hand and get an offer. I don't mean to sound overly confident, but from the response that I received from the manager, it seems as though she wants nurses who have prior experience in mother/baby. My question boils down to this: Am I being paranoid? I know there are more than one positions open so it's very possible that I am. In any case, if I'm not being paranoid and I do get an offer over the other nurse, I feel as though I should turn it down. What are your thoughts? My husband thinks I should take it as I am burnt out on med-surg and would love to be where I have always wanted to be.

Hi Apedro, I'm sorry for getting back so many months later. I work in California and am curious where you are? Like many new grads in Cali I found it difficult to even find a job so it made the decision that much more hard. I ended up quitting, in the end I just couldn't justify putting my license on the line like that and I don't feel any remorse about it. I wound up receiving a position in a very rural acute care setting and it has given me great experience and a tremendous amount of confidence compared to when I graduated. Hi, I am new here although I have read many threads here to gain perspective and advice. About me: I am a new grad RN, May 2013, and I recently started my first nursing job in ltc. The place I work at is about 4.5 hours away, and my intention was to originally move. Now, not only am I disenchanted with the new area, but I feel really anxious about this job. I am a "charge" rn working nights in a facility with about 120 residents. At nights I am overseeing half of these residents on the sub acute side, while an LVN cares for for the long term residents. Before this job my experience with ltc was essentially nil. My school did not provide clinical training in this area, only a tour, and I never worked in ltc. The facility that hired me has a very supportive staff, and the DON is very nice so far. However, I only received 5 shifts of orientation, 3 at night, and 2 during the day. I did one night shift by myself so far, in charge of 60 patients, and nothing went "wrong", but during my nights of orientation someone either had a fall, had to be sent out, or both. I absolutely do not feel I can handle this job if something goes wrong. I do not feel equipped for this position, and feel like my license could easily be on the line. Plus, I don't have my heart set on moving. Is there any advice that anyone could give to me on this? I feel like I need to quit, and I don't feel safe working here for another two weeks with my limited experience. Should I give notice? I'm torn because everyone has been so nice so far, but it can't be worth my license, can it? What do you all think?
