  1. I'm 33 starting an LPN program, in a few weeks. I have read some students starting in Nursing programs much older than that. Because you are still figuring things out, my suggestion to you is to get your feer wet as either a home attendant or CNA. Both require basic nursing skills, though.CNA's work in facilities with nurses and nurse managers which would be helpful to your end. Also, read the boards, shadow a nurse, do your research. Read nursing organization websites for insights. Nursing education is arduous and most time expensive and all consuming. The upside being a worthy investment in that there are many niches in nursing after you get your first few years of solid experience. You could try for BMCC, LIU for evening/ weekendRN programs. You could try for Mildred Elley (sp?) for an evening LPN program. In NYC there are many programs that would work with your schedule. You have to determine if you meet the basic requirements (and better), and if not, do a cost/benefit analysis of what path could get you to your goal quickest that works with your situation the best. First, you should make certain where you want to be in healthcare, the role you want to fill, what you have to offer, and where that combination would fit best. Just my .02 hope it helps to whittle it down for you.
  2. Hi guys. Was wondering if anyone is getting the nursing central app. Also, did you pick up any nclex review materials?
  3. I'm turning 34. Better late than never as they say.
  4. Actually, you are not guaranteed a spot in the city. They did away with the scholarship that offered the work agreement with HHC.
  5. Thanks so much for your suggestions. How do you best cope with having so little time? I love downtime. I will miss it. I work home health now. Hoping a good position comes my way.
  6. I like metro uniforms and all heart as well. I also purchased some scrubs from rmf scrubs. I'm still looking for attractive scrubs for plus size petites. I would like to try on a bunch of scrubs from different companies. My current uniform is so unattractive, it's sad. Lol
  7. Thanks, just having trouble finding something that works with my schedule. I don't have much time. I'm hoping it works out.
  8. Thank you in advance for your experiences and insights.
  9. Hello, Aside from being a CNA, what are descent weekend jobs for a nursing student to hold? I'm looking into home health aide, pct for hospital, pharm tech for hospital, weekend receptionist, babysitting, etc. What are some ways you have earned an income? My program leaves little time to work. M-F 8am to 4:30pm. Ideas or insights appreciated.
  10. If you read through the LPN boards, you'll gain a lot of insight. I personally think that getting a LPN license is a good way to get your feet wet, gain knowledge, and the first hand experience on whether you want to continue on in nursing. Depending where you study, it can be a minimal investment of time and money. There are jobs for LPNs. You have to be diligent, resourceful, and network, network, network. Work hard, learn as much as you can, be likable with a thick skin and short memory. It's the key to success in any endeavor. Good luck
  11. *Considering (not consistently).
  12. http://www.indeed.com/forum/job/dental-hygienist/Dental-Hygiene-Outlook/t472474 Dentistry and hygiene aren't so great either. Having been an assistant consisting both advancement options, I chose neither. Dentistry is tedious and dull. After much soul searching, I settled on nursing. With all of its challenges, it is also dynamic. That is a very attractive quality for me. Nursing also plays to my strengths. There is also more comadarie amongst nurses than other fields. Most career changes are a gamble. The old paradigm of more education + reliable field = great pay is no longer as cut and dry. We are inundated with the college educated. Maybe look into a solid trade?
  13. I'm not sure about study groups yet. Have to see who is in my class. I plan on studying after class till 8 or 9 pm during the week, work and study on weekends for at least 10 hours. It's kind of hard to say because so much is still up in the air. But I will probably find my groove in the first few weeks god willing. Trying to figure out how to get all my books to school first day. We'll see. Excited to begin. That's good you have so much family support. Will be a big help I'm sure. Good luck.
  14. I know what you mean. My program will be M-F 8am to 4:30pm. I wish I didn't have to work but having no income for 10 months would be impossible. Also, there is no financial aid available being that this is a certificate program. I have to still come up with about 1500 in expenses. Still not sure how that will work. Also, my day to day expenses and monthly obligations make it hard to think of not working. Unless a miracle happens, that's the road I have to go down. Lol Kinda blows but is the reality.
