Males in Pediatrics :) Thoughts?
I work a Peds/Women's floor. One of two guys, the third left to pursue NP. The patients seem to like having us just fine, the guy that left was the favorite nurse for a lot of our repeat Pt's. I've had a very positive experience so far, the patients are great and I think they respond to you as a person more than your gender. There are exceptions, and some women have privacy concerns for some items but that's not offensive, I've had teenage boys that were very uncomfortable with a young attractive female nurse doing some procedures and preferred me to do it. I didn't aim for Ped's/GYN just kinda ended up there but it's been great, very supportive group of Nurses especially for a new grad. Follow your gut, go for what calls to you. You'll be happier in the long run.

Out of curiosity, how many male RNs are former military veterans?
Former Active Duty AF, then full time Reserve, now continuing to fly as a part time Reserve Navigator. Been in the service 22 years and counting. Out of the 10 guys in my nursing class 3 were vets, I was the only one of the 10 to graduate. Lot's of the guys at my hospital are vets.

Help!! I'm shut out of the NCLEX exam!
My school has a one credit ATI course in the last month of school during your preceptorship. I had one classmate that failed it by three points. Otherwise great GPA great student. They are making him repeat the whole semester including all the courses he passed or he cannot graduate. In my experience you are in a losing fight. Repeat or transfer are your only options. Arguing other programs requirements will get you nowhere in a nursing program. Whether that is "fair" is a different issue and nursing schools do not tend to recognize fair as a concept.

I have 3 study days left...
Just took mine thursday. 75 questions. Had a lot of peds and maternal and pharm but my classmates didnt. Know your labs and your fluid/electrolytes cold. That helps you figure lots of things out. I did Hurst review and thats all I studied the week prior. I knew my core content well and that made it all seem do-able. There WILL be stuff on there you have never heard of and stuff you vaguely remember. But if you know your basics cold you can figure it out. It wasn't as bad as I had feared. I felt pretty solid. Just remember it is a judgement test more than anything so if you focus on what will kill your patient and Web at you can DO to prevent it you'll do well
