  7. has anyone had the schedule emailed to them for fall?
  8. Hello, For anyone who was CPR BLS certified and needs clarification- they aren't mailing our cards, we have to go pick them up at the star center. I was told to wait until August to get the Flu shot- they said you don't even have to upload the declination as we're waiting for it. My complio is pretty much done for weeee:) Anyone have any recommendations for the nurse shoes and supplies?
  9. I love those aspects, but sadly I am a pacifist.
  10. Thank you for the response(: It's crazy you're going to FIU and found my post! Congrats on getting in, I wish you well in your program and nursing career! I have a question: I live an hour north from FIU, which is why I was thinking it'd be wise to save myself the 2 hours every day in driving plus saving money on gas by living on-campus. In your opinion do you still think it'd be wiser to stay home? when i talked to an advisor there he said no one has ever done the nursing program and honors program! yayy thats comforting to know I'm not gonna be the first aha. And i am waiting to hear back eek!
  11. Hey there stranger :) So I'm looking for some advice. Here's my story: I applied to nursing school for fall 2014. I'm currently a lifeguard, have near a gpa of 3.9, and have been volunteering at a nursing home, so, I think I'll be accepted. The problem is- my financial situation- isn't it everyone's problem?! haha so I've been at a community college and got my AA student loan free weee! (finishing up MCB this semester) so I'm set to transfer to a university and persue my BSN. I used to have this great plan to graduate with a bachelors w/out student loans- well things have changed- now i'm OK with just taking some out for housing and food ($20,000 total). I have worked since i was 16- I'm 20 now- and managed to save up $10,000! which I'm relying on for gas, car insurance, and supplies throughout the 2 year program (1 question- does that sound like enough???) Well, since i will be taking out loans, i know once i graduate it's time to be a grown-up, get a job, and pay them back, and hopefully marry my current boyfriend and start a family(the dream hehe). BUT, I've always wanted to travel to another country and volunteer ( my friend is a missionary in PERU and I could stay with her, just pay for my flight and food and excursions~ machu picchu and the amazon would be life changing for me to see!) I just get the impression these thing won't happen when I'm a grown-up- or that it will be harder for that to happen. So, I'm wondering if this is a good plan- or if I'm out of my mind... I'm gonna sign up for a CNA course (there goes -500$) but I'll still be workin weekends at my current lifeguarding job. Then, hopefully, get a job at the nursing home I volunteer at [gotta talk to them this week] making a couple dollars more an hour, so I leave my current lifeguarding job. and put more into my savings, but also go to peru! Then apply for BSN school fall 2015. Am I wacked out??? this seems reasonable to me, its just my mom and boyfriend say alot of times people drop out of school and never go back. It's just I have a plan, and it's not like my school will look down on me for taking a break where I go and volunteer and work in the nursing feild--- RIGHT???
  12. Helloo all! So I got great news that I am accepted to the honors college of the University I am transferring to to get my BSN. (I have gotten my AA in pre-nursing from a community college). The hon col offers a transfer scholarship for FULL tuition! However, now that I have looked into it i have learned it is not just a GPA and SAT requirement, but you have to take honors courses every single semester too (gosh not even once per year!) The honors college is separate from any other college, and you have to take 2 extra classes per semester (on top of your other course work) to remain in the honors college (also maintaining a GPA of >3.5). The nursing program is one track, meaning i cannot take it at my own pace, i go with their plan. I have planned out my financial situation around this full tuition scholarship and now i'm so upset because i don't know if i can handle these extra classes while keeping my gpa very high. Has anyone on here taken extra classes/ or done things on the side of nursing school to share some time saving tips or warn me away from this or encourage me? I'm looking if they have other scholarships they can give me, but i doubt it will cover full tuition and plus I'm not considered "in-need" but my mom is not supporting me other than letting me live at home, and once i move out, that's over:/. I have managed to work during pre-reqs to save enough to hold me over car- and food-wise, and i was planning to take out a loan 10,000/year to cover a dorm. I am so frustrated that i have gone to a community college for 2 years so i don't come out of school with enormous loans, and without this scholarship i will be over the national average just for going to a state university 2 Years!!!!! ((( I have worked so hard and I feel unrewarded. The University I am transferring to is FIU. if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. Should I just take a year off to work? if anyone can give advice I would greatly appreciate it. ...and I wish you well on your spring breaks
  13. Thank you guys for the replies! I will be going to FIU in miami, it does have alot of bus access, when i go down on campus i'll have to see if i'd be comfortable with that. I currently bike and take a smaller community bus, and get driven around by my mom/friends/boyfriend. City buses in miami seem daunting to me though, but i really haven't tried them out. The bus, and maybe i can carpool with classmates. I'm beginning to accept my goal to graduate without loans is out of reach for me. I really admire someone who has the power within them to work full-time and go to nursing school full time. I couldn't even manage working part-time and school full time in pre-reqs. I began having panic attacks and returning to old harmful habits from the stress and had to leave my job and my relationship at the time crumbled. I'm just not one of those people who can handle time constraints and all the information. Psych nursing is my dream and I just may have to swallow my pride and never tell my grandchildren i got through school without loans, assistance from the gov, and my mom. :/
  14. Hey there, I'm currently a pre-nursing student at a community college with a kinda crazy goal to graduate without student loans. I am lucky enough (if i continue to do well) to have tuition/fees paid for and $2000 to split up per year with scholarships when i transfer to a university. I am unlucky that i do not get financial help from my mother and only qualify for loans (aside from these merit scholarships). My question is, IS THIS POSSIBLE WITHOUT WORKING THROUGH SCHOOL??? I see that on average it is $4000 per semester to live on campus and slightly cheaper off. I do not own a car, nor pay car insurance yet (no license). I considered getting a scooter for cheaper gas and insurance, but i will be in the maimi area (rainy + crazy drivers) and most people i talk to agree that it is not safe. So I just need a car that will get me around. I will be paying for insurance, gas, and the car(no car payments just buying it used) and room and food on my own. I have worked locally since high school and have saved up $5000 from a part time job, probably just enough to get an old but hopefully reliable vehicle. I'm looking to work full-time right now (summer), part-time in fall(i will be a full-time student), full-time spring/winter, and full-time summer. From past experience with A&P, i have anxiety problems and I don't think it is a healthy choice to work in the nursing program. Sorry that this is long, I just want specific advice from people in similar situations.
