Took NCLEX-RN on Friday in CA
Thanks... Sunnydaze...congrats to you too, RN! Vektor...believe me, I was very surprised to feel that my exam was straightforward. I expected to come out and think, what the heck was that all about!! I prepared using Saunders 3rd edition, and the Kaplan strategy book. I started studying about 3 weeks ago and spent 2-4 hrs per day on it. Good luck tomorrow...let us know what you think about the exam! Otan11...I took the exam last Friday (6/15)

Took NCLEX-RN on Friday in CA
I just found my name on the BRN website with an *RN* next to it! I had 79 questions...I didn't think that the test was that difficult and was confident when I left the exam in 40 minutes. I had about 5 meds, but they were basic, no math, 2 select all that apply. Seems that most of my exam was on who would I see first, who would I call first, who would I discharge first, etc... Good luck to all waiting to take the exam & those waiting on results!

Graduate in August- Want to go into L&D. Advice?
I graduated a few weeks ago with my ADN and will start a 16 week training program in L&D on July 9th. My friend and I were hired together, and we went on our interview in early Feb, way before the manager really even planned on hiring anyone! The new grad spots go really quick. Call around and try and schedule a meeting with managers/clinical educators as early as possible. We thought we were just going in to meet the manager & clinical educator in person to hand in resumes...they ended up offering us positions on the spot. Good luck...I cannot tell you how excited I am!

Any San Diego RNs out there??
I will be graduating in May. I live in Escondido and have taken a job at Tri-City medical center in L&D. I have done clinical rotations at Palomar, Pomerado, VA, and Scripps La Jolla. All have been good experiences. We have students taking jobs all over the county. As far as I have heard, most of the hospitals are fine.

What career would YOU have chosen if you weren't a nurse?
I had 2 careers in mind growing up...elementary school teacher and RN. I already have my credential and taught for a number of years. My desire to become a L&D nurse never subsided, so I went back to school. I will be done in May 2007 and feel I am where I need to be.

Calculations, Please help me understand
First off, I assume that the problem says the tablet is available in 8 mg, as opposed to "m". What I would do is first convert 0.024 g into mg. Since there are 1000 mg in 1 g you would multiply by 1000 (or think of it on the conversion scale...there are 3 places to the right from g to mg). You will get 24 mg. Since you know there are 8 mg tablets available to simply divide 24/8= 3 You would give 3 tablets. For the second one I think I got it, but I will let someone else explain. You need to convert quart to pint (there is 1 quart to 2 pints). You then convert pints to mL (There are 500 mL in 1 pints) Hope that hlps somewhat...I am very new to this math too!

Vegetarian being asked to dissect a cat !
In my class we used 6 cats for the whole class. The teacher did all the disecting...it was his experience that when the students did the cutting they would often "ruin" what they were supposed to be looking at and learning from. I was happy that they tried to conserve a bit and that I never had to do anything but look. Does everyone in your class get their own cat? That is a waste...perhaps you could suggest an alternative? I hope you are able to find a solution that works for you.

How much did it cost for your ADN?
How did you like Palomar? I am starting on Monday...anything you care to share??!!

Drug Calculations Book
I am using the book "Dosage Calculations" by Gloria Pickar. I have been struggling with conversions since anatomy when I was taught a different way by a friend the confused me and I never was able to figure it out again! This is the book we are required to get for my nursing program beginning this month. I purchased it in June and have been going through it from chapter one. It has made a huge difference! I am so happy I did this before the semester started.

I bought a Littmann off Ebay...is it fake?
It is not like me to bid on something without doing some research first! My husband will do the "I-told-you-so" for sure! He hates when I try to be frugal and buy things used...especially for something as important as this for nursing school! I have emalied the seller...hopefully she will not send it out and give me a refund. I was as polite as I could be and just assume she didn't know what she was selling. Thanks for your help...I knew I could count on you!

I bought a Littmann off Ebay...is it fake?
After looking at the picture listed a bit tonight...I did some research and looked at some pics of Littmann's. The one I got looks like a Sprague to me. I emailed the seller and she claimed that it is not marked, but she knows it is because she got it "at a sale" and the lady told her it was, plus her best friend has one and told her it was a Littmann as well. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5598708733&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1 Hopefully the link works! What do you think? I am hoping I am wrong or at least that the woman didn't know she was selling the wrong brand! Thanks.

Acupuncture and Infertility
I was a surrogate mother for a friend. We did a frozen embryo transfer (FET) two times. The first time was completely unsuccessful with 2 embryos. The second time we used accupuncture and I did get pregnant, but miscarried. Supposedly these were the "lowest quality" of all the embryos created by my friend and her husband...they also had been frozen the longest. Long story short, we were really impressed by the statistics and really think it helped our chances. Just be sure if your friend chooses this route, that she sees a acupuncurist that specializes in women's fertility issues.

Ok, whats the secret 4.0 students???
I graduated from college with my BA in 1999...I was a 3.5 student and this was before kids. When I went back to school for nursing, I knew exactly what I wanted to do and I did it one class at a time. I do not have a strong bio background...I was a teacher and took the easiest bio classes to satisfy my science requirements for my BA. So when the time came I took one class at a time...it I did well I would move on. I ended up with an A in Anatomy, physiology and micro. I have 2 small boys...they were 1 & 3 when I went back to school in 2002. I studied every chance I had...in fact I had never had to work so hard to get good grades. I did use a small study group. Thank goodness I made friends with a girl that hd just graduated with a 4.0+ in biology from UCSD...she was able to explain so much to me. Do the reading...and just devote the time necessary to these classes. They are time consuming, but I am living proof that they can be conquered! Good luck!

Roll Call--Fall '05!
I will be starting a 4 semester ADN program at Palomar College in San Diego. I have been on the wait list for 1 1/2 years, and I am so excited to start. I have been working on dosage calculations and plan on getting a handle on them by August. At my orientation I was told we will not have time to go over them, that makes me nervous since I have never learned more than what was taught in Phys and Micro! Good luck to all!

Oncology ? Hysterectomy->Surrogate ???
I can't imagine the fear you must have. I can help you with some info regarding surrogacy. I attempted to be a gestational surrogate for a friend of mine in Nov 2004 & Jan 2005. Our first frozen transfer was not successful and the second one resulted in a pregnancy that ultimately ended in a miscarriage. Please PM me and I will give you my home email address so I can give more info, such as cost and good resources. Wendy
