I guess that's what I'm struggling with a little. In Job 1, I still get to do peds but I also get to learn so many other things about other areas I do have an interest in! And yet, I'd probably love job 2 and the non-commute is definitely a plus. But...it doesn't feel cut and dry!

Hello all, I am a recently graduated new nurse who has just been offered my first position and may receive another offer. Although it is hypothetical at this point...I'm trying to think through which job I will choose if I am given that amazing option. Job 1) New Graduate nurse residency program- Position is Women and Children's Float Pool which will include labor delivery, mother baby, NICU and peds. I wil get 8 weeks of precepted experience in each unit prior to being on my own. Residency program has a good reputation and I have a few friends in it for other units, who feel very supported and like it a lot. 45-60 minute commute from home for a 7pm-7:30am shift x3/week but with a place to stay there in town on too tired days. Job 2) New Graduate nurse residency program- Position is Infant/Toddler unit at a children's hospital. Residency program is a total of 14 weeks with some classroom experience and precepted experience on the floor. Also has a great reputation and is in my home town so no commute. 7pm- 7:30 am shift x3/week. Starts 3 weeks later than Job 1 (and only 2 weeks before my first big nursing school loan payment is due). Pay is initially less at Job 2 (just for the duration of the residency program) but will end up being the same once I begin working the nigh shift. Here are my initial thoughts.... -My primary interest has been in pediatrics and the majority of my clinical experience has been in pediatrics. Both of these jobs would be amazing options and I don't think I'd be unhappy at either one...but Job 1 offers me a chance to do what I love and also explore other areas of interest. -I'm a little nervous to be in the float pool as a new grad...but also really like that I would learn SO much and that hopefully, since it is a residency program, I would be well supported while doing so. -The commute would suck and is definitely a factor...as it is a 2 year contract. -One of the things I most love about pediatrics is the variety of ages of my patients and the straight peds unit does not offer that as they organize by age. -I am currently in a serious relationship and living with my partner but we do not have children- probably will within a few years...so if I'm going to take a commuter/challenging job, now is the time to grab it. Any thoughts for me to help me make this potential decision? All are welcome and helpful. Thank you!

Hence my decline... I just had to be practical. Especially after they cut the tuition reimbursement and I got into an equally ranked school in my home state! It is an amazing program though and I wish you all the best!!

Hey everyone, I just wanted to add that although I paid my deposit already to hold my spot...I am likely going to be accepting the offer of a school that is closer to home and less expensive. I'm very sad about this in some ways because I really loved Duke, and I think the program will be completely amazing. From what I can tell of the cohort from the fb group, they will also be amazing. However, after some soul searching, a lot of research on the financials and an offer from my local (and still great) program, I am leaning towards staying put. Keep faith waitlisters! I am not ready to make a final decision just yet but I know some others in the same boat as me. Hang in there!

Oh and stats for those reapplying: My stats: Previous degree: BS in social work 3.96 GPA I'm not entirely sure of my pre-reqs GPA...my one B was in Stats so probably something similar. I still had A and P II and III to complete at the time I submitted my application. Everything else was done. My essay focused on why I decided to pursue nursing and how my experiences in child protective services are applicable to nursing, my experience with my grandma and her cancer and how those nurses inspired me, etc. I don't have a lot of hospital/health care experience beyond some volunteering and my grandma! I did spend a lot of time on the essay (a couple of months) and had multiple people edit it and give me feedback! I know at least one girl who I met at Duke who was accepted to OHSU but has decided to go to San Diego so keep your hopes up waitlisters!

I would love some feedback from current students on those things as well, especially the clinicals part!

Someone in the FB group noticed the change on the website today and posted it...of course everybody was upset and posting like crazy. A Duke Admissions person) did respond to it all and confirm it. He also mentioned the possible 10k reimbursement which is...a drop in the bucket for a school like this. So it has been announced and it is disappointing and now I don't know what to do! Oh and don't forget about some of the other repayment programs not related to the specific school but to nursing in general. I know HRSA is a big one (I think they've changed the name of it...) and there are some others. Something else to think about!

Ah! I'm still in shock I think! ) I'm 90% sure I'm going but still want to think about it because it is such a huge decision! If we accept the admissions offer, is that permanent if I did happen to change my mind (not likely but I want to be 100%)? Or it's not until we send the check and everything and it's okay to accept now? As far as debt...it's terrifying! BUT any ABSN program is going to be incredibly expensive and most of them don't allow you to work because they're so intense and...most of them have no repayment option. A regular program would be a lot cheaper but would take a lot longer and are not cheap either (or easy to get into either). I think it's an investment for the future and it is scary but...not impossible! I was also accepted to JHU and while I am waiting on financial aid stuff on the 1st from both schools and while they are obviously both great...I just fell in love with Duke. It does have some repayment option and I've talked to several people there about how they do not regret it, even with the loans! My A and P teacher (who convinced me to apply) thinks that they are both great but that in terms of looking at everything, that Duke is the better choice. That being said, he said he's had students go on to both who have loved both. So it comes down to your gut! :)

I got in too!!! So excited and congrats to all of you!!! :) can't wait to meet everybody! I think they start a Facebook group so we can introduce our real selves and look for roommates! Ahhh I'm still shaking! Lol

Oh man, I didn't get to respond yesterday because I had my a and p final last night and was trying as best I could to stay studying yesterday! But geez, torture. I see an email from them and it's like heart racing, deep breath, here goes! Oh....just kidding. lol Ugh! But today right?? Hopefully early on today! Wishing people luck and we can all post results later!

I definitely am! Haha I keep hoping since it must be made that they'll surprise us today but since it's 3:15 here now and 6:15 there, I'm guessing not. Sad. lol My final on Monday is at 6 pm and I'm like ahhh...how do I not look before then and if I look and it's bad, I'll be bummed and distracted!! lol I will probably look though. This waiting is killer. Good to know I'm not the only one feeling torn on a decision like this. I also won't here from OHSU out here until mid April and up until I visited Duke, I was sure I wanted to stay here if I got in but...now I want Duke! But the more I look at Hopkins, the more I'm like hmm...How do you already know about scholarship offers for there? Does that mean I didn't get one if I haven't heard? There's nothing on the financial aid part of the website yet except to say that I've turned in all of the required stuff.

Well a few things, one the repayment program is awesome. Two, I have a couple family members within a couple hours from there and nobody anywhere near MD and I would vd moving cross country to go there so that'd be kinda nice I think. Mainly, I just felt something click for me when I was there. Loved it. I never would have predicted itd be my first choice even over the school out here but...there ya go! Hard to say! :)
