  1. Sounds like this facility is plagued with nastiness! As a brand new nurse it is really unfortunate that you are having to deal with that. I would say start looking for another job. I work ICU, and since there are no CNAs or LPNs around to help- everything is total care- we RNs all band together and rely on each other to turn, change, bathe, etc. Nurses are notoriously ugly with each other, but in an environment where we really can't do anything without each other we're all really close. You have a lot of options as an RN, so don't put up with the crap. Put yourself in a place that will help you grow. Good luck, I hope things change so you can discover how wonderful nursing can be!
  2. Floor nursing isn't for everyone. I think the nurses who make a lifetime career out of it are just superhuman! I think it just depends on what you want to do in the future. If it's something that floor nursing would prepare you better for then you should stick it out a little more. Talk to your director if the preceptor isn't a good fit- ultimately you are the only one who suffers. Floor nursing will ALWAYS be there for you if you decide to go back to your former position. As a new nurse you will always feel insecure about some things, and you should be worried about new nurses who aren't that way. Don't ever feel dumb for asking questions. The dumb thing is not to ask and have your patient suffer as a result. In the end, your work should make you happy. If its not, then do something that does! I hope you find your place in a rewarding, stimulating area. Good luck!
  3. Hello all! I am a new nurse and am working in the ICU at a level II trauma center. One reason I took this job was to broaden my options for the future. I really want to pick the brains of some more experienced nurses and see what you think about getting an MSN/advanced practice license. Everyone says CRNA is the way to go, but I would really like to know about more options. FNP seems more accessible, but I don't know that I would want to endure the crazy hours and being on-call for physicians, etc. I guess I'd just like to know what you've heard about new advanced practice careers that may be promising. Thank you all!! -Mindy from Texas
