I work in the ER and it is quite the opposite. While in orientation if there is an EMS code coming in bet your ass you're going to be right there on the front line. Stoke that needs TPA and the neurologist on call is a pain in the ass, that's your patient. Hypotensive sepsis with a lactic acid that you have never seen before or a dialysis patient that needs bipap with a potassium of 9--- again you will be pulled in there. New nurses are trained there so that they can handle the ICUs. I think you're right, it's about exposure. What happens when that veteran nurse of 19 years needs to take a month off for surgery. Would they rather have new nurses that are trained to handle critical patients, and how to find the info they need or would they rather have nurses that are going to crash and burn because they don't know what to do? I am a new nurse, I've worked for less than a year and if a critical patient comes in my crew knows I can handle it and I know how to get others involved if I need help. So why should they not trust their ICU nurse? I would let my manger know, and frequently why I think that I should have more critical patients. If they object I might think about what other ICUs in the area need some help :)

I had it all done, with my AA. I do think that would help them in the decision process, for ex if deciding between two candidates with similar stats, one who has completed everything and one who still has a few classes remaining they may feel more comfortable with the final results of the person who completed.. I would take it, "today is better than two tomorrows" you never know what may come up..

A soon as I get off work I'm emailing it, that way I will have a copy! Then I think I will take my son out so we can can celebrate! I still can't believe this! All those sleepless nights 2 1/2 hour bus rides and studying on every lunch break is coming back to me and I really am proud of myself, it paid off!

Friday is good! And I'm excited for everyone :) at work now trying not to cry but this is so good for me and my family! I'm the first one to go to college and now I feel like I can really be an inspiration for my son.

Hahaha sounds like you know from experience lol. I think we would all make great nurses.

Yeah I don't really know what to expect with little ones, guess I will have to wait and see. I definitely want to feel like a nurse and not a babysitter.. But I want to focus on acute care, emergencies rather than long term.

And I'm guessing they will probably need at least a few years of fund raising and planning before they make the transition but I don't know when they started, so maybe sooner than we think..

I wasn't to do peds or nicu and one of my interviewers was from Nemours! That was pretty exciting :) they weren't open to new graduates this year because they wanted experienced professionals in a new facility but they will be hiring new grads in time for us!

I would have played it up too! If I had any experience. I would love to work in a hospital right now.. Or with patients. I did some brief volunteer work in the baby pace at a Florida hospital but the ladies were so mean when they talked about the patients and condescending to me that I actually thought about changing majors.

Wednesday! Day 5 of waiting.. Thinking I would look really cute in those new uniforms :) It would be my first time in scrubs!

Boston makes me wonder where our country will be two years from now.. I think we take it for granted how privileged we are and although there is plenty of war and strife throughout the world we rarely see any of it on the home front. There are people who deal with loss like this on a regular basis. I want to hope that this is just a random act of violence and not part of some elaborate terrorist scheme, especially with what's going on in Korea. But in our (hoped for) profession we should anticipate the worst and plan accordingly. We never know when conflict might come our way!

Yeah, I will apply but definitely won't hold my breath for that one.
