I will be New to the cvicu in a month and I have a lot of studying and review I need to do. I am wondering if anyone has any good app suggestions for critical care nursing? Anatomy and physiology as well. Thanks

I plan on taking a position in a cvicu in a few weeks and the hospital is giving me three months of orientation on day shift, I will be working on nights however. I have no ICU experience, just three years med/surg experience. Is three months the general orientation for this type of situation? The hospital is small, about 200 beds. thanks

Thank you for your reply. That makes me feel more confident about taking the position. The unit is small and sometimes only has two nurses working on the unit at night. And there is one rapid response nurse. Being new to ICU, I am just nervous about have no doctors there. I think I will take the job tho. It seems hard to get into ICU nursing at other hospitals.

I have been offered a job in a cvicu at a relatively small hospital. I have three years of med-surg experience and would be brand new to ICU nursing. The position is at night and the training is three months long on day shift. I really want to work in an ICU but I am nervous to start brand new at a small hospital on night shift. There are no Icu doctors in house at night and there are protocols for most things that come up. However I am nervous that I will not have enough resources at night being that I am brand new to the ICU. Especially the CVICU. I was hoping for some advice on taking the position or not. Is it hard to get into ICU nursing when you have no experience besides med surg? Thanks in advance

Can someone tell me a little more about agency nursing? Is it like traveling? Do you have a 13 week or so contract? Do you know of any good companies? Is it per diem work? Thanks!

i understand, I guess I thought most hospitals had policies on how to remove central venous accesses and I wanted to make sure I was following policy. I'm still in orientation and I thought it was odd that neither my charge nurse or manager could answer my questions about the removal of such accesses

Hi all, just wanted to get opinions/advice. I recently started working at a hospital and am currently in orientation. Today I had a patient with an order to remove a temporary hemodialysis catheter. I have done this skill previously at my old hospital and there was a hospital specific policy on how to do it. I wanted to look up the policy on how it is done at the new hospital I am working now but when I asked my preceptor where I could find the policy on hemodialysis catheter removal she could not find it so we asked the manager of the floor what the policy for this was. The manager did not know where the policy was or anything about it. I was getting the feeling that not many people who work here look up policies and procedures because no one could help me find it. I even called the AOD of the hospital and no help. Now I don't know if it's just me and I'm overly cautious with making sure I follow hospital policy but the last place I worked I always looked up the policy on how to do certain procedures I wasn't totally comfortable with. Am I crazy? shouldnt the hospital have easy access to policies and procedures like this? Is it weird that not even the floor manager or charge nurse could direct me to finding the policy for this?

Great thank you. I was just curious if it might be easier for me to adjust to a new hospital at nights. I know more discharges and procedures and what not go on during day shift so it seems like a lot of information to have to retain in a day of orientation.

I've been thinking about getting into travel nursing for a while. I have over two years of med surg experience. I have always worked day shift but I was wondering if experienced travels would recommend I look for a night travel position? Do you think it would be easier as a first assignment to work nights to get to know the charting system and how the hospital works faster?

Hi everyone. Was hoping for some advice here. I have seriously been considering travel nursing. I have over two years of experience on a nephrology floor and am just not happy with the job I have now and am looking for a change. However I am nervous to dive into something new. My main concern is with adapting quickly to the hospitals charting system and way things are done. Being that I've really only worked at one hospital, do you think I am ready for travel nursing? Are most places receptive to travel nurses? Also in your experience as a traveler, how have you been treated? Do you get the worst assignments? Are the staff nurses helpful to you? Advice would be appreciated! Thanks !

hi I plan on relocating to Tacoma Washington in a few months. anyone have any suggestions of where to apply? I have a bsn and two years of nephrology med surg nursing. I'm wondering how hard it is to get a hospital job there? any info would be appreciated!

should all nurses have their own malpractice insurance? if so does anyone have any recommendations for policies? I've just been reading a lot of articles lately about nurses being sued or questioned and I am wondering if malpractice insurance is something I should carry.

yes I know thank you everyone. I realize I was just paranoid bc I hadn't had an experience like that before and wasn't 100% sure I didn't get blood on me. I did my research and realize even if I did possibly get blood in my eyes, nose, mouth, cut on my skin, ect. without knowing that it is extremely rare to contract the virus. thank you everyone for making me realize how unrealistic and paranoid I was being. I guess i just needed reassurance so I wouldn't drive myself crazy with worry and I needed to educate myself more on blood borne pathogens which I now have. thank you.

I guess I'm just thinking of how much blood there was and all the possible ways I could have been infected.

the patient was actually being walked down for discharge! the incision started to bleed when we got to the security office where they only had gloves.

great thanks. what about if I had gotten the blood on my scrubs or pockets and touched it with bare hands? I'm sure I'm being over paranoid but I'm just going through every possible scenario trying to get it off my mind

yesterday I had a patient who bled from an incision a pretty large quantity of blood. he was hiv positive. I didn't get any blood on my skin and had gloves on when holding pressure at the site but now I just keep replaying it in my head and worrying myself about some getting on me and I was just unaware. like if it splashed in my eye or mouth or nose without me realizing. I don't know if just being paranoid but I can't get it out of my head

just curious which classes in the rn to bsn program take the longest amount of time and which are considered the hardest?

hello I just took and passed my nclex rn for New York. I have a job lined up in North Carolina just wondering how to transfer my license there? I haven't gotten my ny license in the mail yet but need to do this asap

hello. just trying to get any suggestions on need to know lab values for the nclex. it's seems impossible to memorize all of them. any suggestions on what ones I should focus on?
