Wow. What a tool. I would first start off by hovering over the physician and doing so until he makes eye contact. I would clear my throat and repeat the bicarb level and pH. To be honest, you have to assert yourself in certain situations. By backing off, you are NOT being the patient's advocate. You might take a little heat, but who cares, someone's life is on the line. Push the BIcarb, get a drip called into the pharmacy, and prepare the electrolyte shifts. ICU_Dude

Congratulations to you! I have scheduled to take my CCRN very soon (Feb 6) and I just seem like I'm not prepared enough. It's like no matter how much I study something, I just wind up feeling like I've uncovered miles of uncharted territory. I guess what concerns me is that I've looked at the PASS CCRN book... that thing is useless to me. I don't learn just a bunch of facts and figures in an outline form like that. I have the Laura Gasparis DVD collection but it's so old... I mean the ACLS protocols have changed at least 2-3 times since that video was produced. But what I like is how she explains everything and simplifies it. Makes it easy. I went out and purchased Laura's most recent CCRN Examination Review... but even so, there is nothing covering the new topics listed in the core curriculum (Behavioral for instance)... Is anyone in the same boat here? And if so, what are you using to get through? Thanks, ICU_Dude St. Louis, MO Area

Hey there - I've been working ICU for a couple years now and one of the books I'm working through right now as a cornerstone to my studying for the CCRN certification is an actual textbook put out by the AACN. I'm sure there are more recent editions to this book in print now, but even this edition is quite relevant and helpful as an adjunct to help you grasp concepts. Anyhow, the book is called Advanced Critical Care Nursing. The ISBN is 978-1-4160-3219-9. It's about $80 on Amazon right now. But, it is very well worth the investment. There are chapters that will cover just about any and every critical care problem you may come to face while working in an ICU. Hope this helps, The ICU Dude St. Louis, MO
