Just saw one the other day!! New to L&D (6 months) - no signs of complications before delivery, during delivery. No issues with babe. The OB didn't even notice - it was closer to the umbilicus when put the cord clamp on it then found it. The family all took photos...was very cool.
  2. I am just coming to realize at the end of my orientation on L&D that I have not witnessed any RN's encouraging moms to spontaneously push when fully dilated. There's often a lot of teaching around trying to aim for 3-4 pushes for each contraction, each push more intense than the previous, enforcing chin to chest, don't use your voice or make noise (to contain energy within?) and lots of "PUSH, PUSH, PUSH" The thing is I've just come to the realization that I've been starting to do the same teaching (maybe without the intensity of some of the other nurses)? Reflecting on the theory I learned - spontaneous pushing is what should be encouraged (of course with an epidural some may need help directing their pushes)....I feel that by doing so I will be looked at like what the heck is she doing? I'm just curious what you L&D nurses do? I feel that I am on board with spontaneous pushing ( I know that's what I was encouraged to do with my first) but that it will almost be frowned upon by the other nurses...that I won't be "doing my job" per se. Thoughts?

Seeking some advice. I am a med surg nurse with 5 years experience. I wish to transition to L&D - so tired of med surg and I think L&D might be a good fit for me. My only issue is that I have 2 very little ones and to do the specialty here requires 4 months of full time school plus committing to a year of full time work. At this point in time, this just might be too much for my young family. So I had thoughts of working slowly towards my specialty on my own one course at a time through distance (well the initial courses can be done distance). I had also wondered about the doula certificate. Do you experienced L&D nurses feel that the doula certificate would be of value or not? Any other thoughts, suggestions? I have been trying to get in touch with some units about working casually in postpartum but I understand a lot of units wish all the nurses to have the full training now ( i live in Canada).
  4. I think everyone was very successful in obtaining work as a LPN. They get calls constantly from what I hear to see if they can come in to work that day - due to sick calls, shortage etc. I don't think you'll have a problem finding work. Good luck!
  5. Hi there New here as well! I do know that RN students can apply to work as LPNs here in BC. Many of the students in my program did it but it will cost a bit of money - to pay for the exam application process, writing the exam and registering as a LPN. Contact the College of LPN and they will send you a package with all the information. They are familiar with the process for RN students as many people do this to help finance their RN education. I think it's a great idea if you can afford it and get a job that will give you the hours that you want. It will also give you great experience and it pays!!! Bonus. Good luck with your studies! It's a long haul but it will pay off in the end.
