Hi, I have graduated from a program in a restricted practice state and I am relocating to New Mexico. The education verification form that my program needs to fill out asks about whether I had 400 hours of precepted experience prescribing “dangerous drugs”. Does anyone have any experience with this process? Is this referring to the fact the NPs in New Mexico can prescribe Schedule II medications? If so, it looks like I will need to have 400 precepted hours prior to getting my license or getting prescribing privileges? Just looking for input! I was not able to find much about this particular part of the application process online. I will likely call the BON this week but just wanted to see if anyone went through this same process and could give insight. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am finishing up an AGPCNP program although I would love to work in urgent care/walk in clinic/fast track setting (my program would not allow me to switch into an FNP program). I'm wondering whether any adult NPs have ever worked or been offered jobs in this type of setting. I know it will be more difficult but I'm willing to move almost anywhere and I have 6 years of ED experience and have done some clinicals in this setting. Any advice for securing this type of job with this degree? I will likely go back for my FNP or peds post masters very shortly after graduating but would love to graduate and get some experience first. Thanks in advance!

Thank you so much for all of the help! I think it makes the most sense for me to finish up my current program, maybe try to get some more urgent care/ER clinical experiences, get a job as an AGPCNP and get a little experience before applying to post-masters FNP programs. Unfortunately, it will take me a little bit longer than I would have liked... but it seems easier than transferring credits and essentially starting a program all over again.

It seems as though most FNP programs will only accept about 6-9 of my 21 credits, unfortunately. I am not taking any debt out with my current program but I will be losing out on another year of full time nursing salary since I’m only working part time right now. It just seems like the post-masters certificates are so inconsistent. Some things I have read say they can take 1-2 years to complete!

Would it not be difficult to find a job as a new grad AGPCNP that would give me a flexible enough schedule to complete the clinical hours required for a post masters certificate? We are willing to move anywhere (within reason) after I graduate, but it just seems like a lot of the AGPCNP jobs are M-F 9-5 which seems like it would be difficult and most of the PRN jobs want previous NP experience, which makes sense.

So, I am looking for some advice! I have been an ER nurse for about 5 years (3 at a large level 1 trauma center and 2 as a travel nurse). Last August, I started the AGPCNP program at a local university with relatively inexpensive tuition. I thought that I may want to do primary care or oncology. However, since transitioning from full time ER nurse to part time ER nurse and part time oncology and outpatient float pool nurse (and also completing one clinical rotation in primary care), I have realized that I really miss working with pediatrics and I am now very certain that I would like to stay as a provider in urgent care or an ER or fast track setting. I'm wondering what the best move would be at this point? I have 3 more semesters (a summer, fall, and spring) and will be done with this program next May. My current program will not allow me to switch to the FNP program. Does it make sense to finish this out and then do a post masters FNP or ENP? Or should I cut my losses, transfer whatever credits I can to an FNP or FNP/ENP program? And would that even be the best option? It seems like the majority of the jobs I would be interested in require the FNP so I'm not sure that an AGACNP would even make sense. I could also potentially see myself as a hospitalist, however, that would not be my ideal job and I have no interest in ever working in an ICU. Any thoughts or past experiences with this? Yeah - the letter says that I need to send them back my decision no later than March 15th! Also, it says that the status online should change no later than March 25th? Such short notice!

I live in Massachusetts! That's why I'm so nervous about giving them a decision in just a couple of days...

Hi all, I was accepted for the BSN/MSN Acute Care with a Fall start date (I received a letter via snail mail today and a phone call on Friday morning!). I was also offered the Fuld Scholarship and I was wondering if anyone had any information about this scholarship. Also, I didn't get around to applying for the merit scholarship and I'm hoping that I will have the opportunity to apply for that next year or the year after (before starting the Master's portion)? Congrats to everyone else accepted!

abqbbq, I can only really speak to your first question. I lived in Boston last year and never needed a car. I know someone in the program who told me that having a car is definitely not required (many students don't) and clinicals are accessible via public transportation (they try to work around your specific situation). I know that I will be looking for an apartment near public transportation because I don't plan on having a car. It's also pretty expensive to have a car in the Boston area so I feel like it's kind of nice if you can avoid it : ) I hope that you can have the rest of your questions answered soon! Kind of bummed that the thing tomorrow was postponed!

Hey guys! I also applied to UNC's 2 year nursing program. I graduated with a biology degree from a private liberal arts university in NC back in 2011. I've been accepted to one of my top choice accelerated programs and I have an interview at my other one. I like what I have seen from UNC but as a 2nd bachelor's degree applicant, I'm wondering whether I want to take 2 years to complete the program instead of an accelerated. Anyone else feeling the same or have any thoughts?

Just RSVP'd for the May 4th interview day! @AnnieBopannie, I'm also in a similar situation and I've put a deposit down at another school but I really love what I've heard about Duke so I'm just going to see how I feel after the interview, see whether I'm even accepted and how much I will need to pay in total. If it ends up being significantly more than the other school than I can't really justify it I guess for a 2nd Bachelors. I also plan on getting a MSN eventually so I need to have some money saved up for that : ) If you really like what you've seen from Duke, then I say give it a chance and see where it takes you!

I'm also 23 years old and, unfortunately, have had a personal experience with my mother's ovarian cancer. It's a huge part of why I hope to become a nurse and spread awareness about the disease. I hope to meet you sometime in the near future!

ProfessorT, Wow - I agree completely about interviewing in person! I feel so much more nervous talking on the phone. Unfortunately, I live in Boston so the interview at Duke will be a trek. Haven't quite decided what I will do if I'm invited to interview! I have lots of friends in NC since I went to college down there so it would be nice to visit, I suppose : ) Hopefulnurse24, I'm glad to hear that you have such good things to say about UPENN. I also hadn't heard about the grant money so I guess I'll just wait and see (if accepted) how much they would be able to help me out. I'm also hoping to eventually go on for the Master's (but not sure what I want to specialize in yet) and it seems like Duke and all of the other schools that you applied to do a great job preparing their students for that role eventually!

Have you interviewed anywhere yet? I've never actually been to UPENN either or Philadelphia for that matter haha. They could only give me a phone interview. Is Duke your top choice?

Yes, I interviewed at JHU and I had a phone interview at UPENN. I think that UPENN is definitely out of the question for me due to cost.

I applied to JHU, UPENN, Duke, Simmons, and MGH. My top two are MGH and Duke and I was already accepted to MGH so I'm just waiting to hear from Duke! Unfortunately, I think it will come down to cost if there's a significant difference.

I hope they let us know about interviews early on the 30th. This is the only other school that I'm really excited to hear back from that I haven't yet! Did you guys apply to other programs?

Oh my gosh - thanks so much! I hadn't heard about the loan repayment option but that sounds really great and I will definitely look into it! Do you know if that's something that you need to apply to? 100% tuition would be a dream come true haha..I'm just starting to get nervous about paying for Duke if I am accepted! I worked this past year but won't be working next year and im pretty sure the FAFSA doesn't take that into account : /

Does anyone know if Duke offers any merit scholarships for the ABSN? I've looked at the scholarships online and it looks like there are a couple need-based and scholarships for minorities but I didn't see anything other than the scholars program (not too sure what that program is either!)

Hi, I'm hoping that someone can comment on some of the non-academic aspects of the MGH Institute. Many of the schools that I've applied to are part of large universities and I'm wondering if MGH still has that sense of community. I'm also wondering about clubs, recreational activities, health club membership discounts? Thanks in advance!
