  1. Thank you I assumed this would be the answer. Would any other position most helpful in getting transferred to OB or would they all be about the same? I guess I was just confused because it says OB experience so even if I worked in the ER for a couple of years if I went to apply for an OB job technically I still wouldn't have OB experience.
  2. When I graduate I really want to go into OB or PEDS. It seems like a lot of those positions only hire from nurses who are already working at the hospital. Maybe they transfer? Is that true? I rarely see a listing for PEDS, occasionally I see OB. OB always says you have to have experience though so I am just wondering if my preceptorship I do my last semester of school would count as experience? My instructor said they place you in the area you are most interested in if they can. So IF they were able to place me in OB, would that help me get a job in OB? If not what is my best route?
  3. Thank you everyone for the advice! I appreciate it!
  4. I live in Ohio. With my son I only took 6 weeks off so if I could take 3 months off with another one I think I would be good. What about if I was interviewing for jobs but said I still couldn't start for another month.. For example say I had a baby in Jan. I interviewed for a job in February.. If I told them I couldn't start to sometime in March would they be less likely to hire me? I've only ever had one other job in my life ( I've been there for ten years) so I'm not sure about how bad that would look when interviewing!?
  5. Yeah I know FMLA isn't paid I realize I didn't make that clear. What I meant was I might be able to find a job with a paid maternity leave if I waited. I've heard it's not a good idea to wait to find a job after graduation. But I guess what it's coming down to assuming I can time it right would it be easier to start a new job & learn that job with a newborn/young baby & not have to work as a nurse being pregnant ( we won't have anymore kids after a 2nd one) or work as a nurse while pregnant.. When it might be similar to my last pregnancy that I was sick for. I understand no one can make the decision but my family but when I was talking with my husband about it he suggested I try talking to those who are already nurses to see what their opioion was.
  6. Good to know I didn't have a paid maternity leave with my current job. That's something to consider.
  7. Thank you for the reply!
  8. I'm not sure where the best place would be to post this but I want opinions from those who are already nurses. Currently I'm finishing my first semester of nursing school. I have 3 left to go. I have a son who will be one this month. My husband and I are trying to decide when is a good time to add anther child. I know I don't want to have another one while I'm in school. ( I wouldn't mind being in the early stages of pregnancy while in school but I don't want to have a newborn while in school) We think about a 3-5 year gap between the two children is ideal. My question is in your opinion would it be better to try to get pregnant towards the end of school & have the baby before securing a nursing job. Or better to wait till I found ah job? The obvious answer is wait till I've found a job but my last pregnancy I was pretty sick for it & I'm scared of 12 hour days while being pregnant I just don't know if my body could do that? Money isn't an issue either way. So since you actually work in the job what do you think? What would be better.. What might I be missing?
  9. I do my med surg & maternity in the fall too I'm also interested in this!
  10. I guess I am really just look for advice..so let me explain my story then see if anyone has any to give! I have been in college for 3 years but could never settle on a degree so I took a year off and did some soul searching and decided nursing is what I really want to do. I did enroll in an RN program but I have a yr. of pre. reqs to do while waiting to get into the clincals and then I can start by the time it's all said and done I will have 3 more years of school till I'm done this upsets me on every level possible just because I would have been in school for 6 years for a degree that takes most 2, but hey thats only my own fault...my problem now is that I really dont want to wait 3 years to have my career..& Ive been married now for almost 2 and I am ready to start a family...The idea of waiting for 3 years is so depressing to me..The only reason really why in the beginging I choose RN over LPN was because so many people said it would be pointless to be an LPN when you can be an RN and make so much more money ( no offense to LPN's thats just what other ppl said)...But I just don't know maybe in my situation it DOES make sense because I could get started on a family..give the kids some time to grow up then go back to school for RN or possibly more...I know I wont make as much money as I would as an RN but it's not about money really..as long as I have enough to support my family and LIKE what I'm doing I'll be happy I really believe it's the little things in life that matter the most..I guess a question would be for anyone who was an LPN first then went back to be an RN..was it worth it? or do you wish you would have done RN to start with? How long do LPN-to RN programs typically take? If you were in my situation what would you do & why? Thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this and reply :)
  11. thank you! i've been trying to get ahold of hospitals in my area to shadow but so far no one has gotten back with me Thank you for the reply though :)
  12. I just registered for my nursing pre-req and know that I can easily handle work and school with those I will only be going part time at first because I have been in school before and some classes will transfer. I actually have a couple questions first of all, in general if you are working as a nurses aid (in ohio we call them State trained nurses assistance not sure if thats what they are always called) but do the employers normally work with your schedule? Like when I start actual nursings clinicals I would't be able to work full time so would they work with me? Also, is nurses aid work really that bad. I currently am an assistant mgr. at mcdonalds and want to work as an stna to give me some experience in the medical field before I start clinicals..but everyone I talk to gives me discouraging comments about how being a nurses aid is "crap work"...if I don't like being an stna does that neccessarly mean I'll dislike being an RN? Lastly, anyone else out there work while being in clinicals? Everyone I talk to goes "oh no way you can have a job when you do nursing school it's impossible" but I can't afford not to have a job unless I borrow a ton of money to cover my bills while im in school and im not comfortable with that. Now Im not new to school i actually was pursing a different degree for 3 years and worked full time every second of that even though my family said it was "impossible" I got promoted at work twice during that and kept an A/B average so I know what it's like to work hard and get your priorites straight but nursing school is unlike anything ive tried in the past and im afraid I might not be able to do it. the last thing I want to do is start then have to drop out cause I can't handle both.... Lots of questions there sorry thanks for taking the time to read :)
