I just got a call yesterday about the oncology residency I interviewed for last week, and they offered me the position!! I couldn't believe it! I'm the luckiest new grad ever.

Thanks for the advice. I don't think I'm brave enough to go introduce myself in person, but I did manage to find the email address for one of the nurse managers at a hospital I've applied to. I sent her a note explaining my interest in working on her floor and attached my resume and cover letter. I hope that's not too bold!

Hi everyone. I just graduated from my ADN program in June, and I've only managed to land one interview--for a really competitive oncology residency program--and I won't find out if I've been selected for at least another week. Meanwhile, I'm actively pursuing any other opportunities. I have submitted an application for another competitive residency, and haven't heard anything back. I think my chances of getting an interview for this one are pretty slim unless I could get my resume and cover letter in front of the manager, bypassing the HR screening process. I happen to have the card of one of the hospitalists who cared for my FIL during his cancer treatment at this very hospital, and my question is: would it be totally inappropriate for me to contact him and ask him to give me the oncology nurse manager's email? I'm a little worried that this could blacklist me because the hospital clearly goes to great lengths to prevent new grads from bothering managers (it's impossible to get their contact info). Also, this doctor has no real reason to recommend me because he's never seen how I work in a professional context, except through discussing my FIL's treatment while he was hospitalized. What do you guys think?

For those of you currently in the program: how much time do you spend on schoolwork outside of class? Is it horribly stressful to work full-time while in the program? I just graduated from my ADN program in June and I'm hoping to work while I complete my BSN, but I'm worried that I will be totally overwhelmed!

I will be graduating from nursing school in June, so I've been slowly putting together my resume. I'm wondering if it's appropriate to include care for sick family members... Over the last few months I have been caring for my FIL through his throat cancer treatment. I feel that this experience has GREATLY contributed to my abilities as a nurse (MANY hours of assessments, tube feedings, med admin, wound care, hospital observation, etc), but I don't know if it's appropriate to include this on a resume. What do you guys think?

Hi! I am in the process of applying to RN to BSN programs and I am really worried about writing the personal statement because I fear that what I have to say isn't unique enough. Here's the prompt: describe your professional plans and goals. What inspires your interest in continuing your nursing education in our program? Describe your long-term professional plans and aspirations. How do you feel the BSN will help you toward these goals and/or enhance your nursing practice? The truth is that I'm only interested in getting a BSN because hospitals prefer it and I believe it will help me get a job, but I can't write that! And my goal is to work as a nurse in a hospital, but I don't know for sure what area I'm most interested in. I think I would be happy in MANY areas of nursing! So my question is, do any of you have any advice about writing a personal statement that will stand out, or ideas about what colleges are really looking for? I would really appreciate any and all advice!

I'm totally with you guys. I've been so anxious about this letter! Every day after I check the mail and it's not there I feel so defeated, like it's never going to come! And then I start worrying that something was wrong with my application or they lost it or something like that... If it doesn't come soon I think I might lose my mind! I hate the uncertainty of not knowing where I stand. Glad I have others to commiserate with, though!! Hang in there, guys! :)

Nope, I didn't apply anywhere else! I really want to go to Bellevue. I'm getting pretty worried now that they cut 18 places from the program though!! It probably would have been smart to have a backup plan. Congrats on getting into central!!!

I'm pretty sure that they send an actual paper letter through the mail. By the way, I called last week to find out when they would send the letters out and apparently we should have them by the end of this month or the beginning of May. The suspense is making me crazy! I just want to know!!

Swalken, is that really true? That is just terrible! BC should really have made an announcement about that. Chie did email me to tell me that my TB test results needed to have the mm induration on them, so I had to go back to my doctor and get new copies. I think everything is cool now, but i'm kicking myself for cutting it so close! I wanted to do the NAC program at BC since it is closest to me and already familiar but I can't do saturdays for religious reasons. Anyone know anything about the NAC program at renton tech?

Do all of you have your applications and documents submitted? I just finished getting all of mine together and I plan on bringing them in on Tuesday. I can't stop worrying that I made a mistake on my application or that my immunization records are not adequate or something. It would be so awful to not get in because of a mistake like that. Do any of you know if they will go over your file and tell you if anything is lacking?

Thanks, ccchristine5! The questions on the test are very similar to the practice tests and ATI study manual. The reading section is pretty straightforward; it gives you a short passage or paragraph and you answer questions about it. The math section is mostly arithmetic with some very simple algebra thrown in, but be careful not to spend too much time obsessing over your answers and reworking the problems you have already done...I almost ran out of time on this section because I couldn't stop myself from doing that! I finished the other sections with plenty of time to spare though, so with those you probably don't have to worry as much about time. Oh, aslo, you should know that you can't use a calculator on the test, so don't use one when you are studying. The science section contains a lot of chemistry and biology with some reasonably simple anatomy. As for the english and language usage section, I definitely wouldn't have passed this if I hadn't studied the ATI manual, as english is not my best subject. It has questions on subject-verb agreement, vocabulary, parts of speech, etc. Hope that helps a little!

I took the TEAS yesterday and got a 93.3%! I bought the ATI study manual and online practice tests over the summer and I think they really helped. Anyone else take it yet?

I will be applying this year too! I bought the ATI study manual and the online practice tests. I took one of the online tests today and scored pretty well on everything but the science section. There was a lot of chemistry on it, and I haven't taken that yet (chem and stats are my last prerequisites; i'm taking them this fall at BC). The anatomy/physiology questions were very simple though. I'm definitely going to wait until after fall quarter to take the test so I can learn all of this chemistry! Have any of you taken the Compass e-write test yet?
