  1. Woops! I misunderstood or something, but at least I did get a PM! (many thanks) Debbie
  2. I have an assignment in one of my classes to interview a nurse, so if anyone is interested...do you mind answering these? Thank you! Debbie 1.What sparked your interest in nursing as a career? 2.What are some of your main responsibilities? 3.What type of facility/environment do you work in? 4.What is the most rewarding part of your job? 5.What is the most frustrating part of your job? 6.If you could make any changes to the field of nursing, what would they be? 7.If you had not become a nurse, what would have been your second choice? 8.Has there been an instance in your personal life where your training came in handy? (Explain?) 9.How would you rate your overall satisfaction of your job right now? 10.If you were hiring someone to be a nurse, what would you consider in your decision? (What skills or characteristics) 11.Would you recommend an Associate Degree or Bachelors Degree or does it matter today?
  3. I feel so much better, thank you for the bachelors info. I have emailed the financial aid office, maybe they can clarify their original statement. Then again, they never are that friendly, so maybe in their rush, they misunderstood me the first time!
  4. Thank you, I do know social work is very low pay. My heart IS in Nursing, but I feel so discouraged. Social work is close to my heart too, but I love medicine and caring. (BTW I'm a 33 yr old single mom, no spring chick!) I am just so worried about how long I "could" be in a Pre-nursing program to no end. With the Associate in Science, there doesn't seem to be alot of other options. Debbie
  5. I am in my first year of the Pre-Nursing at WVSU and just realized that once I finish that program, it gives me an Associate in Science. Having a "degree" knocks me out for federal Pell Grants and other types of grants, I was told by the schools financial aid. So, I'm thinking my last two or three years of nursing are going to be loans. Wouldn't I be better off just getting a Bachelors in something else to avoid being in debt forever? I am really getting discouraged. While I have good grades, I just don't see it being worth it to be so far in debt. My other option is Social Work, which pays much less but would make me just as happy. I am getting so scared now. It's my first year, I'm not guaranteed to be accepted into nursing, so I wonder if I should just give up. Bottom line, I am afraid I am wasting two years on a program that will run me in debt and if I am not accepted, there goes two years wasted. Then what do I do for a living? Sorry everyone, I'm stressed so bad over this! Debbie
  6. Thank you, I will now print and prove my point to my friend! Deb
  7. per diem is with no benefits, you pay your own taxes and you are on "as needed" basis? Is that right? I'm not finding out much on the web, but I do know on the CAMC website they say you start at $17 with all the great benefits. I'm now getting confused.
  8. I recently been having a hard time explaining to my girl-friend that new grad RNs in WV are NOT making $27 to $36 an hour. We live close to CAMC, and I'm a new nursing student so I know they are starting more like $17. (plus the differentials) Today, a hairdresser told her that her sister is a new grad and making $36 under contract with CAMC working the weekend shift. Please, someone write back so I can print it out and show it to her. If I am wrong and it IS possible, I will just have to eat my words, right? Is there any legitimate way this is true? Thanks, Debbie
  9. Wow! You all really did some research! It makes feel better to some answers, though I don't like the idea of the fact that if it doesn't pass accredation, it would be hard to pursue an advanced degree. Definitly something to consider there! Thank you for the reply, it answered alot of questions.
  10. I live in the Charleston, WV area. I got a response to a letter I wrote to a very good associate program, and they said it would still take two years to complete their program even with the one year at the other school. Since I am starting this fall at the provisional school, I guess it's just kind of a waiting game to see what I can do from here on out.
  11. I will be starting a two year nursing program at a local University this fall, but I just found out the program is "provisionally accredited" because this is the first year for it. I'm kinda nervous about this and wonder what it means to a student, like what if it doesn't pass initial accredation, how would that affect me? I'm thinking of just going the one year and transfering to a much better school, with a great pass rate for the NCLEX. (last year was 96%) Any ideas? Thanks alot!
  12. I have been looking at the local employment opportunities in my area for RN's and just don't see anything besides 12 hour rotating shifts in the hospital. I will start school this fall, and want to get an idea of what it's like when I'm fresh out of school. My kids will still be too young to be alone while I work midnights! How do I start out if I couldn't work such a crazy schedule? I'll take much lower pay just to not work like that! But what else can you do when you have no experience?
  13. When I read everyone's replies, including the PM, I teared up and had to hold back the crying. Thank you for your encouragment, and I am so glad to hear that you guys have been able to "do it".
  14. Hi everyone, this is my first post after alot of lurking. I can't seem to find what I want to know in previous posts. I live in Charleston, WV and have decided to go back to school, with two children, ages 9 and 13. I really need to hear about some of you who have suffered in the past juggling school, finances and family. I'm starting to feel like I can't do this, and I'm getting scared of going back to school. I'm starting to think I must be insane to even attempt nursing school. (I have to take "pre-nursing" at State) We're going to be poor for a couple of years, but it IS do-able, isn't it? I'm ashamed to say this, but I know I will need government assistance, too. Please tell me you went through this too. I want this so bad. Thanks so much, Debbie
