  1. What is everyones work schedule like on nights? Mine is Th, Fri, Sat (sun/mon off), then tues, wed, th...then six days off. I like it because I can switch back on my six days off for my daughter, but three in a row has been exhausting me. Any have any other schedules that work well, but also allow multiple days off in a row?
  2. I have a BA is Psychology and went back for my ADN and planned to just get my masters as well. I just got hired into a med/surg tele residency program at a hospital in Austin. I think it depends on where you live. I'm from Washington and most of my classmates only have there ADN and most got into residencies after being persistent enough. I know BSN is preferred but it's not required to get into a residency. I know some day ADN will be weaned out but not right now. My aunt is the director of nursing at a hospital back home and she said they take ADN and BSN. BSNs are prepared more for management positions but with time ADNs are too. I think if you only have your ADN I'd go back for BSN but since you have a BA already, just keep applying, get experience and then go back for your masters. Most masters require either a BSN or an ADN and a bachelors in a non nursing field. that's my plan unless I decide not to get my masters then I will do an RN-BSN program. Good luck!!!
  3. From the posts it seems like many more prefer nights? I don't think I have a choice at first. My manager has hired me on days after my residency is over but she mentioned if I truly wanted to switch we could talk about it. I'm not too picky and am just thankful I got the job but it's interesting to read people's opinions on both ESP from those who have worked both. Maybe I will see if during the last two weeks of residency I can try nights to see. I know both days and nights can be busy tho. I worked on nights as a cna and some nights were horribly busy, but I didn't mind Bc it made the time fly by. I'm much more productive when I'm busy but I suppose I worry with being a new nurse being too busy might hinder my learning experience.
  4. Wow thanks for all the replies!!!!! It's all given me a lot to think about. I have worked nights before as a cna but it was 10p-6a. I def did not have a social life. Lol. As of right now they have me on days. During the interview she asked for my preference and I said I did not mind either shift (I assumed as a new nurse id be a nights and she was seeing if I was picky). Oddly enough she said they needed days and with my commute days would be better. Which I know she's right. I'm living in north Austin commuting to south. Traffic is worst both ways 7a-9a and then again from 430p-630p. On nights it'd put me right in traffic, unless I always used toll ways. With days I'd miss it and I have done trial runs. I think I'll def give days a shot. I do know I loved nights as a cna even tho my social life was shot. People were great. Then again I never got a chance to get to know day shift ever. I can imagine day shift is ridiculously busy but maybe that'd be good for me as a new nurse (and bad at times I'm sure lol). I do think days would be easier with kids tho. I worked nights when she was younger and i hardly saw her and when I did I was tired and grumpy. But everyone's right I'll never know till I try it. So I'll give days a shot and try to get to know all coworkers on both shifts and ask coworkers as well. I can sleep days or nights if I'm tired lol. I think I actually got more sleep when I worked nights Bc of blackout curtains and being so tired lol. But my family comes first and I love our goodnight routine to my daughter. I'd def miss it. Again thanks for all the responses and opinions!!! I'm soo glad I found this site!
  5. I just got hired for my first RN job on med surg tele floor in a residency program and they have put me on day shift 7a-7p. She said after my 10 week residency I can do nights if I prefer but they do need day shift. Nights pay 3/hr more. I have a four year old tho and I figured it'd be nice to see her every night. And oddly enough with where I live I'd be in horrible traffic with night shift unless I always took the toll roads. But I still need some input. Can any one give me the pros and cons of day shift vs night shift other than the pay difference? Or give me your own experience with either one or both?
  6. 3 hours? I'm on day shift luckily and have done a few dry runs using toll ways and it only takes me like 25-30min on weekdays??? I have heard though if I was night shift traffic would def be horrible. but I'll make sure to keep an eye on traffic!!! I'm from Seattle, wa so I can't imagine my living in the city.
  7. Thanks everyone!!!!! Scott and white did end up making an offer which did pay more, but after considering everything I chose at David's! I really want to start on telemetry and I'm from a big city so Austin fits me better. Lol I'm young but not single and have a four year old but Austin seems like it has a lot of things to do! We actually just purchased a home in north Austin in a great community! So I'm very excited to start! Both are wonderful hospitals and seems to have great programs for new RNs. I just had to consider where I wanted to live and raise my daughter. Thanks everyone for their advice!
  8. Thanks so much for the responses! I think I am leaning more towards St David's in Austin. I am going to see if they have night shift, though they did tell me they needed day shift (which is odd to me!). I honestly have no preference. I keep thinking even if Scott and White paid more, would I want to live in Temple. I am 26 and still pretty active and Austin seems to have a lot going on. Any thoughts on the two hospitals? or the two different units, telemetry vs oncology?
  9. I have two job opportunities/offers and I need some major advice. One is for St David's South Austin Medical Center in Austin and the other is for Scott and White Memorial in Temple. St David's has told me they start new RN grads at 22.02 an hour. Is this typical? And Does any one know how much Scott and White pays new grad RN's? Scott and White is suppose to be contacting me this week with an offer...but I need to make a decision about St David's soon by today or tomorrow. St David's is for an acute med/surg telemetry unit and Scott and White is for a med/surg oncology unit. I am from Washington state so the pay scale for RNs is much different and I am trying to get an idea about the Texas pay scale for new RNs. Also, can any one give me any opinions on St David's vs Scott and White for starting out? Or living in Austin vs Temple? Or Telemetry vs oncology? Lots of questions, but I am having a very hard time deciding so if anyone has any advice on any of these topics whatsoever, please send them my way!
