After reading your comments, I decided to take the 2-volume plunge. :) I thought about it for a bit, and it makes more sense to have the two textbooks, which provides the option to carry/use one or both of them, should the need arise. It seemed like a better option than having no choice other than to carry around the huge single volume book and regretting not getting the 2-volume later. You guys are awesome! Thanks again!

Would you guys go with a 2-volume text, if it was available? Our required med-surg book for the upcoming semester has the option of a two volume text, but since we haven't gotten our syllabus yet, I'm not sure if there will be a lot of "jumping around," which, in my opinion, would negate having the book in separate volumes. Since the single text is 2000 pages, I can still see the benefit of having (2) 1000 page books rather than one monster, but I'm also wondering if it would pose a nuisance, having to scour two indexes for any given topic rather than one. Anyone have any experience, good or bad, with 2-volume textbooks? I would definitely appreciate any information. Thanks! :)

I went with CM&F Group. It was in our packet to choose from, along with NSO, but it ended up being about $26 versus NSO's $37, so I went with it. :) If you want to check it out, go to the link below, click "PROCEED ONLINE TO CHECK RATES," and it'll take you to a disclaimer page. Agree to it, at the bottom, and use 08/30/12 as the effective date, since that's the first day of "class" (even though it's really an orientation). Select "New Jersey" as the State, of course, and make sure the "Per Incident / Aggregate Limit" is selected at "1,000,000 / 6,000,000." Then, if you want to go with them, you can complete the application from there, and it'll be done in about 5 minutes. You pay the $26 dollars, and it'll be bound in minutes. When we had orientation, our packets included a piece of paper that started with "Student Name: DOE, JANE," and it listed Fall 2012 courses. Towards the bottom of that paper, all the sections were listed, with their corresponding hospitals, and the one that you were in had a check next to it. I pulled that paper out to refer to it, but I'm not sure if you got the same paper. At the orientation, they also said that sites weren't locked down and could possibly change, though. One of the speakers said to check Blackboard on the 30th, which is when all of the locations would be confirmed and listed, as well as an updated calender listing. Hopefully, the sites stay the same though. It's definitely great that you got a site that's close to you! :)

Thank you, Brillo! :) I can't believe I didn't think of that earlier, but it goes to show you what an incredible resource this site is. For some reason, I didn't even think about how valuable an "old edition" text can be, especially when you consider that they're practically free! As soon as I read your post, I hopped on eBay, and I'm scouring (no pun intended! :)) that site in a different window, as I type out this reply. I've also written down your tip on my whiteboard behind me, as well, so thank you for giving me a tip that will undoubtedly be an asset to my studies! :w00t:

I know this subject probably gets rehashed every time a new nursing class starts up, but I appreciate all of you taking out the time to reply to me like it was the first time you heard the question! :) I ended up going with the Davis guide, since it seemed to have exceptionally thorough "Nursing Implications" and "Patient Teaching" sections. I figured these two areas alone would serve me well in my upcoming semester. Although, I must say I did like the way Lippincott's intro section had a whole part devoted to the various classifications, as well as listing the drugs that fell into each category. All of that aside, I really wanted to send a big "THANK YOU" out to all of you. I read each of your comments and took all of them into consideration when I went back to B&N to look at the guides again. :) You guys are the best!

I got a Cardio III for my upcoming semester, and I wanted to know if anyone else on here, preferably with the same model, used a clip or holder rather than neck draping (with or without a sleeve). From what I've gathered, wearing a steth around your neck can: get in the way, be cumbersome, act as a bacterial breeding ground, and/or stiffen the tubing - just to name a few. :) Since the clips seem to be relatively cheap ($5, give or take), I figured it couldn't hurt to buy one beforehand, but I've read that the standard issue hip clip might not fit the Cardio model. Does anyone store this model stethoscope in a holder rather than around your neck, and if so, can you pass along the brand/model information? :) I would definitely be grateful for any and all feedback. Thanks for that information! I'm only familiar with RT.80 traffic pattern. it's a good 40 minutes from CCM, but more/less depending on where you are coming from. I have yet to find a fellow classmate. lol I ran into a couple of people that are going into the fall program in the Health office when I was submitting my medical clearance packet, and we were all pulling out our papers to see if we were in each others clinicals. Of course, no one had the same section, though. lol :)

Hi, again! I'm really happy to hear that the department did an orientation for the both of you! I'd imagine that they would want to do as much as possible to prepare you, given the short notice they gave you guys. :) You must be so excited! I'm slowing creeping into the nervous, butterflies doing loops in my stomach stage (that's an official term, right? . Did they tell you your location or section number? I think that all five of the hospitals do clinicals on both Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 7:00 - 12:30. I'm still trying to figure out how much time to factor in for traffic for driving to Morristown, but we shall see. Did I mention I was excited and nervous?

Then, of course, when I double-checked my paper, it turns out I'm in ********** on Wednesdays, but in *. I think my group consists of all of the students that have A - C last names, since it's the first section. :) lol I just wonder who they are. Hmm..

At the orientation, they said that we really only need to purchase a stethoscope and bandage scissors, but after perusing this site, I'm probably going to purchase a couple of extra items. The clinical sites were assigned to us, along with specific dates/times, and I believe that they went by blocks of people, based on last names. Considering that you are replacing a person that already held a seat, I would assume that you are going to take over the site and classes that person was initially assigned, but who knows? I don't know the specific costs of the things we have to purchase, but here are some tidbits off the top of my head: - The uniform set that you have to get from the school's supplier runs about $105 including taxes, which is assuming you only want one set of pants and one top and you don't need special sizing (tall or plus). They have a specific model # for each item that you must purchase; the top is white, pants are wine colored, and the lab coat is also white. - The mandatory malpractice insurance was about $25 with the insurer I chose. - The books I would suggest getting off of Amazon or anywhere other than the bookstore, if you can, but if they expect you to start next week, you might have to bite the bullet and pay retail+. - The steth that you go with will vary greatly depending on the brand and model you ultimately decide to go with. In my search I saw $15 ones all the way up to $300. lol

THAT IS AWESOME! I am so happy for you! I know that one semester makes a big difference, assuming you would have been flexible and could have gone and done nights in the Spring, but especially if you were only planning on doing days during the Fall, that would have meant waiting a WHOLE year, if that seat didn't open up. It's hard to say what that person's circumstances were that required them dropping, but at the end of the day, you get to have a jump-start on your career, which is fantastic! Do you have to do everything in the next week, though?! I can't imagine that they'd expect you to do all of the medical clearance stuff done with such short notice, not to mention the supplies and books. Let me know how it goes!

Hi there! :) CONGRATS!! Were you on a wait list? I'm surprised that they would notify you a week before the semester starts! Just in case you didn't purchase the fundamentals package yet, the publisher is selling the bundle directly, with free UPS shipping, and there's a 25% coupon floating around out there. I ended up buying it straight from Elsevier and paying $136, when it's going for $181 at the bookstore. Did they tell you where you are assigned to for clinicals?
