  1. I just looked it up quickly and you are supposed to use a filter with Etoposide. http://www.cancercare.on.ca/pdfdrugs/Etoposi.pdf#search='etoposide%20and%20filter' YIKES! I've been hanging it for years and NEVER used a filter.
  2. I agree - it is a great book. It's the one book I used to study for the OCN exam and passed on the first try. Buy it!
  3. i also work in bone marrow transplant. we give etoposide all the time and have never used a filter with it. we do use filters when administering taxol. off-hand that's the only chemo that we administer that needs a filter used with it. now, you've got me wondering about the etoposide. i'll have to look into that one!! our pharmacy or nursing supervisor wouldn't know the answer to that question. we're better off finding out on our own!!
  4. I've worked in oncology for 8 years; had three children while working there. As previously said, you won't be handling chemo, but would need to use universal precautions when handling urine/stool/vomit etc. You need to avoid patients with active CMV virus; which the nursing staff at the hospital would be able to arranged. It's not a danger at all for you to be on the unit. Relax and go with whatever your instructors feel is best for you. Good luck and feel good!
