I am thinking of accepting an assignment in NH that it slightly over an hour from my tax home which also is in NH. It's a rotating shift, I don't mind driving back and forth from the assignment on days but I don't think I would feel safe driving over an hour on nights because of how tired I get. I was offered straight pay, or travel pay so I could collect the housing stipend, but I don't want to get in trouble with taxes. I plan on getting a hotel when I have to work the night shift and drive back home when I do day shift. Is that safe to accept the travel pay, or should I just accept the straight pay? Im wondering if there is a certain amount of days I have to sleep away from my tax home at a hotel in order to justify taking the travel pay..

It's actually a confusing situation-or maybe I am making it that way! My current residence is in NH, which is obviously one of the states with no state income tax-but now I work in VA. I have been living in VA for the past 14 months, working on a neuro/trauma progressive care unit at a large level 1 trauma hospital (as a staff nurse). This past month my lease ended at my current apartment and I downsized with a roommate to a smaller, affordable apartment so it would be easier for my roommate to afford when I leave. I am not actually on the lease, just chipping in a bit for rent so I can save up in between the gap of leaving my job and starting my first assignment. I just recently made my primary residence back to NH at my parents house which is where I lived my whole life, until the move here in VA a little over a year ago. I also recently purchased a car and have it registered in NH, and have other financial ties in NH. That is where I plan on going after I put my notice in, and wait to start my travel job. So when I start my traveling, how will that work with the taxes? I want to reap as many benefits as I can if I do decide to start travel nursing!

Hi everyone, I am trying to decide which hospital to do my partnership at which will be starting in January. I live in southern NH and some of my friends are choosing to go to boston because they believe they are likely to get employed with them after we graduate in may. I just wanted to know based on others experiences, how likely it is to become employed with the hospital you choose to do your partnership at. It would be awesome to go to boston if it meant I had a good chance of being hired as a new grad, but I somehow find that unlikely since most places want nurses with some experience. So it's tough choosing to either pick a local hospital, or deal with the commute to boston or some where in Mass. Thanks!
