  1. Thanks charlies_nurse for the heads up! I was actually able to attend the open forum for nursing students at CMH in September (which I felt fortunate because I just happened to be looking at their website when they posted it). As a result I am set up to shadow in their NICU this month! I'm glad to hear KU is expanding their NICU, they have a great reputation as well. My school said I could possibly do my capstone at KU or Overland Park Regional Medical Center. I'm curious as to what your thoughts are on that.
  2. I realize this is an old thread ,but was curious what the outcome was?
  3. Unfortunately I don't live in the KC area yet so it makes it even harder to try and get a job right out of school there. However the hospital I work at sends our most critical babies to Childrens so at least there is some sort of connection. I figure it is going to be very tough to get a position in an area like NICU directly out of school ,but I thought I'd find out what hospitals will even look at new grads for hire. Thanks for your feedback!
  4. Thank you so much for the advice! I am kind of in the same dilemma, the NICU at the hospital I work at appears to be on a hiring freeze as well as having a consistent low census. However I have been able to make a lot of good connections in my unit as well as gain experience. Part of relocating once I graduate is to go to an area with more job opportunities in the childrens hospitals, another part is that there is just more to offer in a bigger city in general. I am nervous that when I start applying for jobs (using references from my current job) that it will look obvious my first choice is not at the hospital I work at.
  5. Hi everyone, I am strongly interested in working in the NICU upon graduating from my BSN program in May 2013. I currently work as a nurse tech in a level III NICU in a large hospital in the city I live in, however, I plan on relocating once I graduate. I am well aware of the competitiveness in this specialty and I feel being a new grad doesn't quite make things easier. The city I plan on moving to is not too far away from where I live now (about 3 hrs) but I was wondering how I could increase my chances of landing an interview, how to make connections in a new city, organizations to get involved with before graduating, etc. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
  6. Hi everyone I am currently working in a level III NICU at a large hospital as a nurse tech. Although I do not graduate form my BSN nursing program until May 2013 I was wondering what the job outlook at any of the hospitals (particularly at Childrens Mercy, KUmed, etc) in the Kansas City area is like for new grads. I am excited to start my RN career and would appreciate any advice. Thanks :)
