I need to reschedule my orientation. Need advice
Thank you, so much. No we did not agree with any starting date. During the interview, i told her that March would be a little difficult for me to start, but she hired me anyways. I sent her an e-mail, but she hasn't replied yet. Do you think that it is better to call her (she gave two phone numbers besides her e-mail). Thanks, again.

I need to reschedule my orientation. Need advice
Hi, I have been offered a position in the ER of a small and lovely Hospital. The position is part-time, two nights a week. It's like my dream job. Fits perfectly with my schedule. I have another job, which I like and have a nice boss whom I highly respect. Here is the situation; I was offered the job to start orientation in a month. Orientation is full-time and in the morning. I still can do that, but three/four weeks after the proposed start day. I have previously acquired commitments with my previous job, which I cannot and do not want to avoid. I will ask the nurse manager about the possibility of delaying the start day for a month, to honor my commitments and to serve this new job 100 %. In the meantime, I can even volunteer to get acquainted with the Unit, paperwork, and personnel. I do not care about paying, I just want them to hire me a a bit later. How can I approach the nurse director? Isn't it too dangerous to ask to be hired a month later? I do not want to disservice anybody here. Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Take advantage of a volunteer job.
I am writing this post to receive some advice regarding my volunteer position. I am a new graduate BSN (Dec 2011), and, as many these days, unable to find a job. As many today, I also applied to all kind of nursing jobs, shifts, and facilities. I got two interviews, but I did not land in a job. I also took extra courses with clinical practice, and kept refreshing pharmacology basic care, and med-surg from nursing school. Finally, I feel blessed since I was accepted as a volunteer in MICU and SICU, in a hospital almost 70 miles far from my house. Most of the job is clerical, organizing drawers, learning to enter data in the computer, and getting supplies from other units. However, last time I was in the unit, at my request, I helped nurses with cleaning, positioning, and sticking the patches of ECG on the patient's chest. I also shadow another nurse doing an admission. No need to say, I was extremely happy. I understand that I cannot practice as a nurse meanwhile I am volunteering, but this is a start. My question to all of you, is how can I maximize this wonderful experience to acquire critical thinking skills, be better prepared for a future "new nurse" job, and how much can I bother these busy nurses? I love to be a nurse, and I do not mind doing whatever it needs to help nurses, patients, and improve in my skills, but nurses may be concerned about liability issues. Does my insurance cover this? Finally, if you, as a critical care nurse, had this situation (a non experienced RN volunteer trying to help and learn) what would you be willing to share? Thanks, and happy holidays!

New Grad.. No Job(Of Course).. What should I do in the meantime?
Great comments! I am also a new graduate, RN-BSN, and will begin to volunteer in a Med-Surg, or ICU unit (no RN job, but on the floor). I had interviewed for a big hospital before, but finally not chosen. Anyway, what I want to add is that the interview for the volunteer position was very, very similar from the one I had when applied for a new graduate RN. This may be an extra advantage since it's like practice to shine in your real interview. Good luck to everybody!

Congratulations morningdew!!!!!! This is a big accomplishment.I have my interview on the 30th, I guess because I completed my tests at the last minute!! Anyway, I am preparing hard for this interview. I already pick my units, but most of them are terrific, so I do not care if I do not have the ones I selected. The most important for me now is to pass the interview. According to what you said, we have only one interview and you just wait to be or not to be hired?? I thought we had two interviews, one was the panel and the second with the nurse manager. I guess that it's only one interview? How many people are in the panel? Do you interview alone or with other applicants at the same time? If you can share this info, I'll be more than happy!!! Again, Congratulations!

Congratulations! I hope you get it. I finished my tests on Saturday, and do not think they were that bad. I do not know if they are not contacting me because I took them late, or if I failed...Do you guys have any idea if I have still the chance to be invited to interviewing? I m getting a bit anxious here. I really love Temple, but I have my doubts about getting chosen now... I will really appreciate your comments.

Hi, morningdew, How was your interview? I already took the tests, and do not think I did bad on them (especially Pharmacology). However, I was not contacted. Do you have any idea if failing or having a low score on the tests eliminates you from the hiring process? Do you know for how long they will going to interview? Thanks. If I am not contacted, I wish you the best.
