NP Program UBC/UVIC
@Nayj haha I totally know what you mean by UVIC’s “casual yet extremely intense approach”. I got into UVIC and UBC. I had really positive interview experience with the UVIC faculty member - you could tell she was a very experienced NP who was passionate about their program. UBC on the other hand, I didn’t get that vibe from the panel. However, in the end I chose UBC due to being closer to home and eventual plan to go back to the in-class setting. @Nayjwhich school did you choose in the end?

NP Program UBC/UVIC
I had 6.5 years of nursing experience at the time application: 1 year palliative at ESN, 2 years Cardiac, 2 years of ICU, 2 years Clinical Informatics Specialist - Critical Care working where I gained project management and leadership experience working closely with operational directors, and physician and nursing leaders for the CST go-live. Prior to nursing, I had BSc. Psych degree and had research experience as a research assistant at UBC Centre for Infant Cognition. My GPA was 87.6% at UBC BSN (3rd and 4th combined) and 96% at BCIT Critical Care Certificate program. During the UVIC interview, I had the sense that UVIC preferred those with more years of clinical experiences or specialty nursing certificate. On the other hand, during the UBC interview, I felt like they weighed more on academic capability and leadership experience. It doesn’t hurt to try applying for the next intake if your heart is set on becoming a NP. Hope you get it (fingers crossed), but if you don’t, you’d know that you need to get more experience under the belt then reapply.

NP Program UBC/UVIC
@NayjI took the advantage of all 30 weeks because I didn't really do anything for the first 6 weeks. There is a total of 6 assignments - I pretty much did one assignment/month. It took me one day to get through one chapter and complete an assignment. Assignments #4-6 are more challenging in terms of their contents and because you need to complete 2-3 chapters before completing each assignment. I would say, if you are diligent and got time, you can even complete the course in 2 months! But, if you are working full-time and want to balance life, then 3-4months is reasonable.

Congratulations, @LTRN08 and @ptRN28! @raymondjay06 I confirmed with UVIC Faculty of Graduate Studies that 'Recommended by Department' means the department wants to offer you a seat. Then this goes to the Faculty of Graduate studies to process remaining paperwork before sending out the official 'provisional acceptance letter'. This paperwork process takes about 1-2weeks from when your department has recommended you. In this letter, you will find information such as send over the final transcript or proof of certificate etc. So, 'Recommended by Department' can be seen as 'pre-provisional acceptance' :)

@Annbroad I heard really good things about both UBC and UVIC NP programs. I think it really comes down which learning style works best for you- some learn better in in-class environment vs some learn better with flexibility of online learning environment. In terms of studyload and intensity, both schools are intense but those who have gone to UVIC seemed to have little bit more time on their hand to pick up extra shifts or work part-time because the many classes were asynchronous. So few of my colleagues to whom finance was a key factor in their decision chose UVIC over UBC. I also heard UBC tends to put people into clinical placements within Greater Vancouver, so some chose UBC over this reason. But my colleagues said there are benefits to being placed in rural/remote where they learned more skills and consolidate their practice due to lack of resources. I also heard UBC tends to focus more on research/academia so if for those who wish to pursue PhD seemed to choose UBC. Again, these are few things I've heard when I asked around about NP Programs. Having worked with NPs who completed from both schools, I think they are both good. I have a friend who is doing UNBC and she chose UNBC NP because it let her complete the program part-time basis over longer period. And she is liking the program!

I was told within 4 weeks, if accepted, they will notify us of acceptance and this week is 4th week since my UVIC Interview. I was thinking of calling them tomorrow. It appears that they already sent out rejection emails though.

Thankful for this thread. I got an email from UBC this morning, and I have been put on their waitlist. I’m not sure how many people are on the waitlist.
