Diagnosed ADHD before nursing school. Will this disqualify me from joining the USAF?
Hi everyone, I always had a tough time with school and work, not because I am stupid or lazy but because it seemed just impossible for me to focus and sit down long enough to get work done. I compensated all throughout school by cramming last minute and being bright enough to do decent. I was raised with parents that were strictly "sit down do your work" so I never considered any medications. Before starting nursing school, I went and saw my doc. I told him about my grades, lifestyle, studying habits, etc. and he prescribed Adderall 15mg tablets BID. I was a little nervous about the med but he stressed the importance of my exercise routine (which I exercise religiously) and a good diet (which I have). Anyways, the medicine really helps me focus and I am able to get stuff done in advance so i'm not shoving stuff down the night before, etc. Instead of Cs/Bs I am getting almost all 3.7s and higher. I don't take it a lot, one script last me months (where I can get a new script every month). If I had to stop taking it I think it would be extremely difficult to compensate but I could do it. I want to join the USAF as a nurse right after graduation. I am going to set up an appointment soon to talk to a recruiter but before I waste any time I am curious - does having a previous dx of ADHD automatically disqualify you, specifically with the tx of adder all (since this is such a controlled drug). I have tried searching but have come across mixed answers, it seems with a doc's prescription that I would be fine? Thanks

Please Help! New RN BSN Student wanting to join USAF after graduation!
Hello everyone! Read allnurses.com quite a bit but never posted, until now! Hoping I can receive some positive support and help here... Here it goes! I'm a 22 year old male who starts a traditional BSN RN program at a university this fall (fall 2012). I have changed majors etc out of high school so that is why i'm a bit late on starting the program - I get good grades, never in danger of failing, etc. I am dedicated and committed to 1. getting through nursing school and more importantly 2. joining the USAF as a nurse. My questions are as follows... When do I need to start talking to a USAF health professions recruiter? Since I haven't even started the program yet (this fall) I did not want to talk to them and make it seem like I am wasting their time when I am 2-3 years away. Now that it is 2012 and it seems like a lot more nurses / cutting of jobs from the USAF, how hard is it to get accepted to the USAF fresh out of college? I honestly do not want to work a civilian job after I graduate, I want to go straight to the service! Essentially, what should I be prepared to do and when should I do it? I don't want to go to the recruiter to early so they think I am not as serious and far away, that's why I am asking here! Can anyone give me any helpful information? I'm not sure if the information here on this forum is still as relevant since it is from 2-3 years ago! Thanks in advance..
