How many patients do your charge nurses in acute care settings take on days, p.m.s, and nights? What is the patient/nurse ratio for other nurses working on those shifts? If they don't take a patient assignment, what other duties do they perform. Thanks, Jeannine

Hello, I am a clinical nurse manager of a Neuro/Trauma ICU and a medical/surgical telemetry unit. We are a 254 bed medical center. I have been charged to determine nurse/patient ratio for charge nurses. We have done some tests of change in our facility to determine nurse/patient ratio for the charge nurses and the smooth flow of unit acitivies. I strongly believe that charge nureses need to take reduced patient assignments. I would like to know: 1. How many patients are assigned to the charge nurse on your unit? 2. What type of unit and the bed size of the unit. 3. Hospital size 4. Did you do any education for staff? Any other information that you think would be helpful is greatly appreciated.
