WHC Nurse Residency July 2014
How long did it take you for you to endorse your DC license? I'm planning on taking all my paperwork in person to the DC board of nursing to get it done if I get the residency. And did you interview on New Grad day? What top two specialties did you request? I just got an email from the nurse recruiter saying I have an interview in May, but I'm trying to get a feel of what to expect! Thank you!

UMSON Fall 2014
I hope so too! The school takes students' input into high regard in making adjustments to the program. I respect UMSON for that reason. In that aspect, I really believe UMSON is a good school. With that said, all of us complained about the unnecessary amount of clinical time spent in psych last semester, so hopefully they might have shortened the hours! Good luck to you and I hope everything works out!!

UMSON Fall 2014
Sorry for getting back to you so late! Well... I can't speak for the new curriculum, because I honestly don't know whether they lightened the load for the bigger courses. If they haven't, your 2nd semester is sure looking crazy.. VERY crazy. All I have to say is that when my class saw the new curriculum posted on the website, all of us let out gasps and said that the school was insane to cram pathopharmacology, medical surgical nursing (previously called Adult Health), and psych all in the second semester. For us, we had pathopharmacology in the first semester along with Fundamentals, assessment, and research. But for the new curriculum, they've placed pathopharm and moved psych into the 2nd semester, which I have to say is an ungodly amount of work if they haven't changed the actual course content. This is why: A) you have two clinical days for med-surg and one clinical day for psych. that's already 3 days out of your week. B) pathopharmacology was the hardest class for us in the first semester because it is VERY content heavy. you need to be very good at memorization for this class. C) medical-surgical (or previously called Adult Health) is the hardest class in the entire program, and I'm pretty confident that all my classmates will agree. It's not necessarily difficult content, but it's VERY content heavy. And it's actually starting to think like a nurse and answering NCLEX like questions that's difficult... I know that some nursing schools split medical-surgical nursing into two courses, but for UMSON, it's all in ONE course which is why it's so intense. D) psych is not very difficult, but you need to invest a significant amount of time doing work for the class. The combination of those 4 reasons is why all of us "pitied" the incoming classes. But at the same time, I'm sure UMSON did SOMETHING to make sure the new curriculum is doable. Hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions!

WHC Nurse Residency July 2014
Hello everyone! I wanted to start this thread so all applicants can support each other through the process... which I need, haha. Has anyone who applied hear back from the nurse recruiter? I got an email from the nurse recruiter asking me some questions, but she hasn't asked me to come in for an interview yet. If anybody who has heard back can provide more insight/updates, that would be great! Also, I'm taking my NCLEX in Maryland so is anybody else planning on endorsing for their DC license if they get offered the residency?

First day on Med/surg clinical
I understand how you feel! But really, just treat the patient like you would treat your own family member, and it'll be fine. That's what I did, and it just made my communication with the patient so much easier and smoother. Everyone wants to be confident, but it's just fact that you will make mistakes and there will be things that you don't know. As long as you are an eager student who shows that you're willing to learn, your teachers and staff aren't going to look badly on you! Take it from me, a fellow nursing student!

Recommendation letters for new grads! Advice?
Thank you for your advice GrnTea! I guess I'm wondering if there's an unspoken "limit" as to how many times you should ask your instructors for letter of recommendations. I already have several nurse residency programs I want to apply to, and that's not including the many "regular" new grad positions that I'm also planning on applying to.. I know that instructors receive requests to write letters all the time, so it's not a big deal to do one, but will they give me raised eyebrows if I ask for 10, or even 20 copies? I guess I'm a little spooked out after reading so many new grads not being able to land their first jobs. I just don't want to be out of school and 6 months later, my instructors reject my request to write me a letter because it's been too long since they've had me or I've asked them too many times!

Recommendation letters for new grads! Advice?
Hello everyone! I'm a fourth semester nursing student graduating this May from a BSN program and I've started to look around for new graduate positions and nurse residencies. A lot of them (or so I've read here at allnurses,) require that we bring copies of letter of recs from our clinical instructors to the interview. In my previous experience with instructors, they prefer to email the letter directly to the place that the student wants them to go to. My question is how do you go about asking for several copies of recommendation letters (physical copies) when you don't know A) when the place you're applying for will get back to you, B) if you'll even get an interview, and C) when you're planning to apply to many different hospitals. The reason is I want to know is because I don't want to keep asking instructors to write a rec letter for me every single time I get an interview.. any suggestions??
