There are a few places within an hour of crossing the border. Classic health apparel and uniform destination are two that I went to. You might have to make 2 trips as some sizes/colours need to be ordered in. You'll get brand name scribs (greys anatomy, koi, etc) @ Vancouver MOBB brand prices (I don't like the fit).

Get your stethoscope beforehand from regency medical supplies (Canada Way & Willingdon) beforehand if you have a student card. It is much cheaper than the scrub sale prices. There are lots of cool colors you can order in as well. Most people in my level have the Classic II SE, which is a double sided stethoscope. Being the lazy person I am.. I chose the single sided Master Classic II; it was weird at first but eventually you get the hang of the doublesidedness. Scrubs are MUCH cheaper in the US. So if you have the time make a trip down and buy 2 sets for clinical (plain color, nothing fancy, but some clinical instructors don't mind the 2 toned scrub sets. YMMV). Also buy a scrub top for lab. You don't need the pants for lab. As for pre-readings, I didn't do them as they made no sense at the time. For 1019, each week there's one day clinical and one day on campus (I forget if it was all weeks). The on campus portion focuses on each component of the basic assessment (basically the prereadings). So if you skim the readings beforehand and PARTICIPATE in those sessions you should be fine (it was pretty fun too). As for criminal record check and immunization.. I don't remember it being stressful or anything because they are pretty slack about it. I think for the criminal record thing you only need to sign a piece of paper. If you cant get your immunization records then I think they are cool with that too, since there are many older students that had their shots done before some of you were even born . Like someone mentioned earlier you may need to get your blood tested. Just work hard for the first 6 weeks and make sure you pass 1019. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Jeez Louise XD I dont remember there being so much confusion about these references last April. If anyone was wondering, my employer/volunteer person didn't write any additional info. So don't feel you need to request an encyclopedia from them.

It's good to see everyone is so keen here, but try not to stress yourselves too much. When I applied I handed ALL my things on the last day, and in the end I got messages and stuff faster than everyone else (weeks ahead even..).. So just relax! )

I think it's just the form, and if they want to add more they are welcome to write on the back. My referees only wrote a sentence each so I guess it's not mandatory.

Hey! I took PSYC 1101 online and PSYC 1102 in class. They were both different ways of learning. The online class was more based on the notes and had more assignments (35% of grade) that were more time consuming. The tests were also harder (harder in the sense the questions were more focused/detailed). This was probably due to the fact that the professor told us exactly where to study, but there was still a great deal of info. The in-class one was more boring and more of a textbook course. The upside was the tests were easier and there were 2 very small assignments (1 page double spaced essays) for 10% of our grade.

Thanks smiley65 and co. for the awesome experiences. It was awesome until the student questions came. Then I almost fell asleep. Not your fault though. Ha ha, no one put up their hand to using this forum except me.

I was freaking out about this immunization thing today so I decided to get off my behind and do it. I just typed "Burnaby Public Health Unit" in Google and there seems to be different locations depending on where you live in the Lower Mainland. Since I lived and went to school in Burnaby I decided to walk in to the Burnaby one without calling ahead of time. I walked in to the office, and literally 10 minutes later I walked out with a photocopy of my immunizations from elementary and high school. Unfortunately the ones from when I was a baby were put in storage, and they said it would take a month to retrieve. Seeing as the deadline is on the 21st I thought I was S.O.L. I then went to BCIT Health Services, and within a 1 minute I was in the nurse's (who deals with immunizations) office. She went over my records and even filled the form out for me. I told her about the missing baby records and she said it was fine as long as I brought it "???to the immunization session thing??? (i just nodded =P)" She did tell me to get the Titre/Blood work thing done, and after getting the results I could hand in the Immunization records all together. So I went to the walk in clinic at Brentwood and was in and out in 10 minutes. So it doesn't really take that long. Just allow time for test results and stuff. =D

hey smiley65! just a random question if you aren't too busy. on the nursing boards at school there are regulations on -watches -shoes -stethoscopes (any recommended one, like is the double sided mandatory?) -scrubs after you got in did you find out any leeway or criteria not listed for choosing them? thanks for taking the time to respond =)

It is optional. I had to because I failed 2 semesters years ago. It also seems like they are getting somewhere. On MyBCIT they updated that they received my references.

Wow they freaked me out today. I was on my computer and my MSN messenger had a popup that informed me BCIT nursing sent me an email. The contents of the email said "thanks" Probably in response to my letter of intent submission.. ARDHDADJADJGAD!!11! (my mind during the 2 seconds it took to open the email haha) scary XD

Awww.. I'm sorry to hear that.. If you haven't done so finish all the required electives before hand. If you still need to complete at least 5 courses (ENG, LIBS, PSYC) then technically you arent wasting that much time (only half a year). In return for that half a year you will probably save yourself many tears from the stress of having to do them while you are in the program (I hear its mandatory to cry while in nursing school). And if you are trying to be independent like me then try finding a job that will help pay for school (and possibly give you required experience). Anyways, don't give up =)

I just got a rejection from UBC. They said I was amongst the bottom 25% for supplemental stuff. If I didnt have my mind set on BCIT I would be super choked :3.

Rejected!.. Oh well, I guess my top choice is still alive. Good Luck to the rest of you =)

Hey vana_! Stay positive! Until you see 2 or 3 crazy people yelling "OMGZ I got shortlisted!!111", just believe you're still awesome and in the running. Waiting is still hard though. The longer I wait the more I second guess myself. The UBC thread has been pretty dead these past few days so i guess no one else has heard either..

Short listed people have "pending department review" as well. Hope that saves you some time :).

If it helps your conscience. I read mine. If they didn't want us to read them, then they probably would've did what UBC does. Which is get the person to seal the envelope and sign the flap. Also, the contact info is also on the bottom so if they smell something fishy they can contact the person directly

Haha. This thread is turning hateful, but their points are valid. I personally wouldn't mind getting rejected because someone took an interview spot and didn't intend to get into the program. It just means I need to find ways to improve myself. Like the person above stated, this may backup plan, and its not like they didn't also go through the application procedure you did. Last time I checked, most people don't waste 100+ dollars just to screw other people over. I laughed out loud at the grocery store comment. I too find it strange that people magically have aspirations to become doctors, or garbage men etc when they were 5 years old..I love hospitals and I see interesting things happen there. Heck, just yesterday I saw someone die. Was that the interesting part? No. The interesting part was what the man nurse did before that. He gave the dude chest compressions for a good 10 minutes. It was an up an down battle; that sadly he lost. But the idea that I could have the ability to save someone from death is pretty awesome if you ask me. My reasoning for wanting to be a nurse is kind of stupid, but does that mean I'll be a bad nurse? Regarding those people who go to interviews knowing they'll decline. Maybe they have other reasons. Perhaps they want stressful interview practicen or they might want to slay a giant.I applied to Pharmacy school at UBC last year, made it to the interview and got decline after that. I was crushed, I spent close to 3 years getting the prereqs done perfectly because I had to boost up my 1.7 GPA that I managed to accumulate 2 years before that up to standard and work at the same time. After that I decided I needed a backup plan so I chose nursing as well. After awhile I realised that nursing was probably more rewarding in the long run in terms of patient interaction. I still applied to pharmacy so I could, like the angry poster above stated, "boost my self esteem". I spent a good 3 years trying to get in so quitting now is something I will regret later on. Sorry for making this so long, and thanks for buying my biography , all proceeds go to charity. .

Hey yohane! Don't worry about plan B too much, it may actually come naturally and you may enjoy it more than Bursing. Nursing was actually my Plan b, but then I realised the job market for selling Plan b's (and other medications) is not so good at the moment. After I got rejected after my UBC Pharmacy interview I decided to use Nursing as a backup. I also believe I'll find Nursing more rewarding as I enjoy volunteering at the hospital more even though I get paid at the pharmacy. I think for UBC you need 48+ credits minimum, I just barely scraped that so I'm not going to hold my breath or anything. My preferred school is BCIT because it seems like it's a better fit, and ALOT closer.
