right... not too far away-- (i do stalk the mailwoman though!). Willowita, I'm so sorry about your grandma!! That is really sad and I'm sure incredibly difficult for you and your family. I find the lack of care for our society's mentally ill a tragedy, (and a pervasive problem here in Los Angeles.) Hopefully we will have the chance to work with these disregarded gems from a nursing angle. I know you will get in and be able to help so many with your obvious caring. Wherever your grandmother is now, I'm sure she feels your compassion, passion and is very proud of you!!!

Aghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!! Thank you though DarleneH! And thank you too UnsungHero and CountyGeneral, I'm with Willowita- definitely don't want to be fluffing pillows- would SO much rather be toughing it out in the trenches getting to see all the more complicated cases!! I want to work in low-income clinics where cases are compounded so all that information made me even more excited to take my first big bite of LA County!! I think going back to school older can be hard yes, but I've also had a hunger for nursing and learning as a career change that has far surpassed any desire to learn I ever had at an earlier time. I have been chewing off semesters of 17-19 units to get through it and into nursing school as swiftly as possible, so my study and time management skills have gone from 0- pretty refined in the last two years of getting my AA. It sounds like I'm going to need them- God, I hope I get in- I can't wait!!!

I don't think they'll start until May 15th, but was curious if they determine the score earlier... ohhhh, the wait- it's a killer!!

Tips on getting an A in A&P1?
Hey Avalee! First of all- don't worry, you are going to do just fine- you are already sooo ahead of the curve being so prepared before class! I did the same thing- getting the book early b/c I was so freaked!! What really helped me in Anatomy was videotaping on my phone going over the model figures with my lab partner. A lot of students have done this and posted on youtube. I would watch those over and over again at home, because even though everything is in the book, on the practicals we were tested on the same models we studied with in class. I would also go to the tutoring lab and record a tutor going over the model for me and then try it myself with the tutor again and again, then go home and watch the tutor version to cement it. I'm someone who needs hands-on studying so it really helped me for the practicals. Physio- I loooove concepts, so I was really fascinated in this class. Whenever I had a hard time with something (it took me so long to really get cellular respiration to the point where I could teach it b/c I know it so well)--- I would go to kids science websites where they break stuff down really simply, then I would go to my favorite learning website EVER- Khanacademy.org --- he breaks physio concepts down so well, I swear this site's saved me before a test a million times! They have a ton of subjects that are lectured on. I don't think a lot of people use teacher's office hours, but I strongly encourage you to get to know your teacher, befriend them and make use of the office hours. I've found that having a strong relationship with a teacher who knows you are really putting in the effort can go a long way. Later in applying for stuff, you can go to them for recommendation letters and advice. I've also emailed my science teachers before classes started as well, just introducing myself. It's a good start to class, then they already have heard your name on day one and keep an eye out for you. I strongly encourage you to really lean into this knowledge- I just took the TEAS and it's allllll on the study guide! Not to mention the fact that we will use this info to help others the rest of our lives!! Oh, and GOOD LUCK!!! :hrnsmlys:

Hey all- I applied to LA County for Fall 2012, was invited to take the teas- just got results back- I think they look at the "adjusted individual total score"--- but not sure-- there are so many percentages and rankings on the report page! If they do I got 78.7%, which I think is 20 pts for LA cty (first time I took it- I was soooooo nervous!!!) and i'm pretty sure I have 65 point from the grades, which brings me to 85 total points. I'm freaking out b/c I don't know what score on the teas they look at and have no idea what the cut off score will look like for Fall 2012- insanely competitive! I'm hoping for LA county, but applying just about everywhere else too just in case. I feel like it would be a miracle if I got in!!!! Also, does anyone know-- and this is a stupid question, but it's been a while since I went to the information session- so if the cut off score is say 85- and I got an 85, does that mean everyone 85 and below doesn't get in and 86 and higher automatically get in to the program? Or if you get 86 and higher, do you then have to go thru additional testing or interviewing to get into the program, or are you just in? Thanks, I'm a total newb!!
