BCTC Fall 2013 Applicants
I just wanted to stop by the thread to say GOOD-LUCK to all our first year RN students! Believe in yourselves, study like you never have, and don't be too intimidated to ask questions or turn to your mentors for help. Ms L is always eager to help you practice skills, so don't hesitate to go to her and set up a time to practice with her. You can and WILL do this. I look forward to seeing you all on campus, and would be more than happy to help you or answer any questions I'm able to answer, as would many of the 2nd year students. Krista

Fundamentals success is a WONDERFUL source! In fact, I suggest buying the Davis series for every course (med surg, psych nursing, peds, maternal/newborn, etc...)Some instructors use these books for test questions. The nursing "made incredibly easy" series is great as well. I found it especially beneficial for 212, which you should have in the spring. Good luck!

I totally understand. I got engaged 6 months prior to starting, so I only had an engagement ring. I have barely had the opportunity to wear it since starting the program. I know some of the girls who have cartilage rings, etc. wear the clear retainers while at clinicals, and those with tattoos on their arms wear long sleeve solid shirts under their scrubs. It really depends on who your clinical instructor is. Don't be nervous though. I was nervous about clinicals more than anything, but they "weaned" us in to the clinical setting. We were on campus during our clinical day for the first three weeks, then we went to long term care facilities for the next 4 weeks, and spent the remainder of our clinical days for the fall on our medsurg floor. It was a great experience and completely different than CNA clinicals. You'll be fine, and I'm sure you'll love the experience.

No problem! I remember how it felt walking in there day one with little info, and no idea about what to expect. My best advice is to study acid/base balance and fluids/electrolytes. Dosage calculations aren't too bad. I think many people get freaked out about the fact you have to get 100%, but you have a few chances and the math isn't that complicated. If you get "the nurse, the math, the meds" know chapters 1-7 like the back of your hand and you'll be just fine. A lot of the stuff is really simple. I don't get on here much, but I'm more than happy to help any way I can. Good luck!!! Not sure about the nose ring... But you can wear one solid band as long as it has no studs or anything.

"So today i went for my first of 3 Hepatitis B series vaccine. Little problem i'm hoping to get verified......the line seven on the cost sheet says "Hepatitis B Series* (or titre)" The star says, *Validation of each of these items is due on the first day of classes." Does this mean documentation that the series has been started? Or does this mean that the series (3 vaccines) must be complete? If so, that is a problem for anyone who has not done their Hep B yet. I did my first today, April 17th. Then you have to wait a month for #2 so I go on May 20th. But then you have to wait 5 months to get the 3rd...meaning October!!!!! I've sent an email to confirm. Please let me know if any of you already know. Get started if you haven't already!!!!" We had to have our first of the three prior to class.

They change things every year, so I can only give you an "experienced" answer... First semester is more than the rest (I spent 1140 last fall) Each semester you will buy Kaplan--$120 X 4 (they'll explain it in detail day one) 2nd semester we bought our med-surg book (it will be your primary text from then on) Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing VitalSource and PrepU Access Cards Package: Suzanne C. Smeltzer: 9781469823782: Amazon.com: Books 2nd semester we also needed our mental health nursing book Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing: Concepts of Care in Evidence-Based Practice: Mary Townsend: 9780803627673: Amazon.com: Books Each semester you will need a skills kit (price will vary depending on supplies) You'll also need to purchase peds, maternal newborn, pharm 2. Hope that helps

"So, I submitted my University Health compliance form which states that I had my flu vaccine administered on 10/4/2012. It clearly says, "Today's Actions taken: Influenza Vaccine 0.5ml administered in the Left deltoid." I downloaded the form onto the www.certifiedbackground.com site and today it said Rejected. The last time I checked, flu vaccine isn't given during the spring season. Hmmm....does anyone have any ideas? I have highlighted the verbage on the form and resubmitted it; we'll see what happens I guess. Another question...was the certified background site" required? Hey! Congrats I'm a first year student, and regarding the flu vaccine... Due to the fact flu vaccines change every year, the one from the last October will expire around the 6th/7th week of the school-year anyway. The flu vaccine is the only vaccine we did not have to have until sometime in October, as they understand that is when you can receive the optimal vaccine for the year. I'm not sure about the certified background site, as we had to turn our vaccines in to the nursing office, and the only website we used prior to school starting was verified credentials for our thorough background check.

I'm currently on unemployment and have NO insurance. A friend of mine told me about the "White House Clinic" in Irvine. If you life in Powell, Irvine, or Madison County you may qualify for a reduced fee. Because I live in Clark County (which isn't in their service area), I have to pay the full $80 fee. BUT this includes ALL the immunizations I receive that day. My aunt advised me to go with the immunizations if they were affordable, and then do titres for updates if needed. She said even if we go with the titre instead, there is a possibility the titre will come back negative and we'll have to spend more money on our immunizations anyway... They couldn't schedule me as a new patient until May 4th, but if anyone is interested the number is 606-723-0665

Which HD did you call? The one here charges $75 for the HepB vaccine (per shot and you need 3), and I'm with you (trying to save)... I was going to call some of the labs around Lexington. Lab Corp does lab work for half price if you don't have insurance and are paying cash. Still waiting on my letter, as I'm not sure exactly what titers I need etc... I also plan to call a few smaller clinics. I got my TB skin test done for $8 at a small clinic in Powell County. I called the HD there and they said it would be between $35-50 because they had to call an RN in to read the test... They gave me the name and phone number of the clinic, and I got it way cheaper. While I was there I asked the LPN about the HepB vaccine and she said they didn't have the vials... I'll call them Monday, and let you know if I have any luck. My letter hasn't came yet... Did you call Kroger's "little pharmacy"?
