The informational session I was at also said they were going to take 72 people. Definitely sucks being a waitlist person this year. I'm super bummed I didn't get in but I have a back up plan so I guess I'm going to move forward on that. Congrats to those who got in.

Thanks for the update. That really makes me mad. They told us 72 would be accepted and then they just take 54! As a waitlist person I feel like if they just would have accepted 72 people (like they said they would) then maybe I would have got in. I understand why they took a smaller class but I think they should have warned us that they might take less then 72 people this year. I just kinda feel like I got screwed

Thank you! Yeah it's crazy how different every medical/nursing program admission process is. If you are still thinking nursing and you can get your graduating GPA to at least a 3.0 you could apply to Detroit Mercy. They are expensive but I think less people apply because of that. Also there is U of M. I thought it would be much harder to get into UofM but I'm actually on the waitlist there right now. They look at everything which is good for people like us. They are changing their program this fall so I'm not sure what's going to happen with their admission process next year but you should check it out. another field to look into is PA school. My friend graduated from MSU with I think a microbiology degree and had a low GPA too. She took a bunch of extra classes at LCC and also became an EMT. It took her a few years to do this after graduation but she just got into a really good PA school! While your thinking about all these medical options you should, if you haven't already, take an EMT, CNA, or medical assistant course. Having experience working with patients will help you no matter what you do and it is required for PA schools. Good luck!!

I have no idea about Wayne State but I can tell you for sure that your GPA is probably going to be too low for MSU. I graduated from MSU with a 2.9. Since then I have taken many extra pre-reqs (I did very well in these classes), retaken classes, have 3+ years of hospital volunteering experience, and took a CNA course. I applied to MSU twice and was rejected both times. MSU's program puts most of their decision on your undergraduate GPA. So whatever GPA is on your MSU transcript when you graduate, that's what they look at the most. No matter how many classes you take after graduation, it wont change that GPA. Their average GPA is 3.57. My boyfriend was accepted into the MSU program this year. He had much less experience than me but he had a 3.69 GPA from MSU. He says the lowest GPA he knows of for someone who got in was a ~3.4. It doesn't matter what your major is either. I had a BS in a health related degree and his was something completely different (sorry I don't want to give out too much info about us :) ) I don't mean to be discouraging, that's just my experience. Also, if you re-take classes they wont consider those grades (I asked the advisor about that). I think it's stupid MSU places so much of their decision on that one GPA but unfortunately they do. It never hurts to apply though, but I would definitely apply to many schools to increase your chances of getting in somewhere. Also, if it's possible, it would actually help you to not graduate until you take the extra pre-reqs. Get your GPA as high as you can before you graduate. If your going to be coming back to take classes anyway, delaying graduation would actually be in your best interest in the long run. Just something to think about.

Did you send them an extra letter of interest while you were waitlisted? The e-mail I got from UofM when I was waitlisted seemed to hint they didn't want to receive things like that, just relative updates like grades, volunteering, etc. Since being waitlisted I have only sent them my final grades from spring semester.

soooo out of curiosity, has everyone gotten a decision or is anyone still waiting? Also, do any past or current students have advice for getting off the waitlist???

I just got an e-mail saying I got waitlisted. Now I'm hoping for a miracle so I can get off the waiting list!!

Congrats! Which program did you get into??

UofM does "rolling admissions" which means they supposedly they release decisions as they review applications.....but who knows. It seems like they release a few decisions through out the winter/spring and then most of the decisions around May. I think when you spoke to the admission person they meant that all the decisions will be released by then.

I'm in a similar situation. I graduated a few years ago with a bachelor's degree and after a lot of time volunteering in a hospital I decided I wanted to be a nurse. My ultimate goal is to be a family nurse practitioner too. I started applying to accelerated BSN programs and I'm currently applying to these programs for the 3rd time!! I'm also in a lot of debt from my first degree but I decided to try the ABSN route anyway because I knew I also wanted my masters degree and I wanted to do it as quick as possible. My problem is the programs are so competitive in my area I can't get into a ABSN program. I am now going to apply to a community college. Supposably, the hospitals like students from the community college because they get a more intensive clinical experience compared to the ABSN programs around here. My advice is go the community ADN route if you would feel better about the cost. I'm 26 and knowing what I know now I wish I would have done that back when I was 23! I know it always seemed weird to me to go back and get an associates degree when I already had a bachelor's degree but in the end I just want to be a nurse and I'll do whatever it takes to start that path. I haven't heard anything yet either. It's frustrating but I'm just hoping that means they spend a lot of time reviewing every application. Spartan89- I don't blame you. I wish I had all the prereqs to apply to UD sooner. If I could start a program...any program right now I would! Good luck with your decision!

Spartan89, since you already found out that you're waitlisted can you do me a favor and check your Common Application website and see if by the supplemental application part it says downloaded? It says on mine that the application was "downloaded" but by the supplemental part it just say "complete". I'm just trying to figure out if they download it right before they review your application or if that "status" doesn't change at all.

Did you hear anything about why they extended the application deadline?

Well, they are adding the extra months to give us more clinical experience (although I know that's not a lot more time). Also we could probably work as a nurse during the masters program. My plan would be to try to work part-time during my masters degree.
