  1. Hey guys I'm just wondering, I understand that correctional nursing really emphasized nursing assessment skills, what about other skills? Would an RN lose a deal of their clinical skills like IV insertion, catheter insertion, suctioning, etc.? What kind of clinical skills would an RN expect to use in the correctional setting? I'm reading a lot of comparisons to a doctor's clinic and not to be insulting to nurses in a doctors clinic I notice they mostly do assessment, vital signs and health education (sometimes), no other "hands-on" skills needed before the doctor comes in and sees you. I'm considering correctional nursing but at the same time I want a well-rounded experience, I don't want to be that nurse that is great at assessment but can't put in an IV even if my life depended on it.
  2. I recent got two job offers in two different fields, one being a psych nurse, I was wondering what kind of career opportunities can I find in the future if I do go the path of a psych nurse. I've already been told that nursing is a big field that I can always try to go another direction if I don't like the direction I took but I'd really like to invest my time in a career I can advance in instead of hopping around to different fields. I don't want to be on the floor as a psych nurse all my life, I'm hoping to start my Master's Degree soon, where could I go in the field of mental health nursing later on? And another thing, I have experience working at a SNF and it was pretty chaotic with pt's with alzheimers and bipolar or psychosis and your occasional drug seekers, would I expect a psych hospital setting to be as chaotic?
  3. Thanks for the info, I currently work in a Skilled Nursing Facility, I enjoy it but, no offense to nurses in SNFs, I feel there isnt a whole lot of future opportunities for a young RN in a SNF. I'm leaning towards the correctional for a few reasons one being the schedule I'm going offered to me is more convenient. But I want to find out more about it cause I won't let short term conveniences have me regretting the direction I went in the long run.
  4. Hi, I'm an RN who recently got 2 job offers as a correctional nurse on a state prison and a psych nurse in a psych hospital. Im really leaning towards the correctional nurse job however I wonder what kind of career opportunities I could find if I take the path of a correctional nurse. Obviously, if I take the psych job I have the option to pursue a career in psych nurse practitioner, how about correctional nursing? Where could I go later on? I hope to further my education in the future I just wouldn't want to find myself with limited options. Thanks!
  5. Hey guys, I'm an RN with two job offers, one in a psych hospital and one in a state prison. I was hoping to get some input on which would be better in the long run, I know a little about each (mostly from the helpful posts on this site), but what direction should I take my career. I'm guessing psych could help me later on if I wanted to be a Psych Nurse Practitioner, how about correctional nursing, what future career opportunities could I find getting into correctional nursing? I hope to further my education in the future and I just don't want to place find myself with limited options. Thanks!
