Taking time away from career-help!
I can just add my two bits from my own experience. I had been away from nusing for six years. Because of my child's health, I began having to school her at home (a full time job). I kept my license up by renewing every two years, did the CEU's etc... After six years, I took the refresher course required in Texas, and then began to apply. I was very nervous; I didn't think I was hirable, but I just kept taking steps in faith. I now have my dream job - hospice! When I look back, I can't believe how fast the 6 years flew by - I don't regret missing one day of nursing over spending time with my kids. I have one graduating this year - the days are long... but the years are short. The prn idea is great - it just didn't work for me. I needed the weekends to rest and enjoy family. I wish you the very best. I just wanted to let you know that it is not the end of the road for your nursing if you choose to stay home with your kids. Best of luck in your decision process. Now.... go give those little ones a hug!

RN Nurse Refresher Course
Yes, the BON does accept the Austin Community College online refresher course. I can't say about any others - maybe look on their site? I enjoyed the course and was glad for the refresher. I am happily working as a hospice nurse now! Best of luck to you and re-entering the field!

RN Nurse Refresher Course
I took the RN refresher course through Austin Community College - it is all online. I live in Amarillo (which is like living in another state as far as distance to the rest of TX cities). It was one semsester and they offered 2 lab days. I did not do the lab days because they were in Austin - they are suggested, not required. There is also a preceptor period. I did not have to do the preceptorship because although I had not worked in 5 years, I had kept my licesence current and updated. I don't know if this is any information you wanted, but maybe if there are others needing a refresher course..........

Advice on moving to Amarillo
Welcome to Amarillo!! There are several new apartment complexes around the medical district. The medical district is on the NW side of town. The North side and East side of Amarillo are the older parts of town. Amarillo's "newer" areas would be South and West side. I would stay west of Western Street (or even safer would be west of Bell Street) and South of Amarillo Blvd. I will be working in the same building as you are. I work at Odyssey Hospice which is a floor down from the Pavillion. Stop in and say "hi" - I'm Sara (the nurse, we have a Sara Social Worker too). Best of luck with your move and new job! :spnngwlcm:
