  1. I'm a student and need to take a 6 hour continuing education class at another college. Do I have to dress professional or can I just wear a tank and jeans?
  2. I had an exam in school and one of the questions asked when does nausea during pregnancy usually resolve? The answer was the 3rd month. However, in our textbook, it said, "Nausea is primarily noted during the first trimester of the pregnancy and usually resolves by 13 to 14 weeks." So, can the answer also be the 4th month??
  3. do you think it's a good idea to email her today regarding this?
  4. I'm in my psych clinical right now. It's been only day 5 and I have a lot more clinicals left. I am a quiet person and I am not not talkative or outgoing like others in my group. I've had 3 clinicals before this, and my clinical instructors have all said I would be an excellent nurse. However, this psych clinical is different. The instructor first lets us do 1 hour of group activity with the patients and then gives us time to speak to different patients. We have about 1.5-2 hours of post conference. She always says she has a lot of experience in psych and is an expert because she went into psych right after graduation which has been about 30 years. However, once you ask her direct questions pertaining to psych, she doesn't know the answer. She goes..hm...let's look it up in the book or she would direct the question to us, asking what we would do. I thought maybe she was tired for that day, but she doesn't know. even in class, other students would ask a question, and she would just direct the question to us or just say some bs. i am quiet, but i do talk to patients. i may not be very talkative, but when i'm 1:1, i talk and ask questions. in post conference, in front of everyone, she says i'm too quiet and that i will never be a good nurse. i was extremely upset. how would she know when she hasn't even seen me in the med-surg clinicals. this is just psych and maybe some people are not cut out for psych. she says i'm too quiet. yesterday, i overheard her speaking to another instructor about me. she was talking s*** about me. how do i overcome this when i have so many days left of clinical? i'm crying..i don't know what to do..
  5. I worked as a unit clerk per diem and every other weekend for a year now. I asked my supervisor if I can become a nursing assistant. She told me training would be for 2 weeks and said if I can really do it, then I can go for training since I'm already in the nursing program. I told her I would do it. I was thinking of going for training and go to my classes right after since I take evening classes. A week before my orientation started I had my evaluation with her. she said I did a great job and even asked me about the transfer to the nursing assistant position. she asked me how i would train if i was in school. i told her i had class at 5:30 so i can leave right after my training. she said that is great. today was the last day of orientation and i find out my schedule. she says i need to train 1 week for the day shift and the week after the evening shift. i told i couldn't because of my school schedule in which i cannot take off. she got a little upset and says she told me it would be for 2 weeks and i told her i would do it. i told her yes, because i thought it was during the day shift since ive been working the day shift and she didnt even mention it during the evaluation. she told me that i should i just do it over the summer and there was another person who came to her office so i had to leave. when i got home, i emailed her what im writing here. she said there was no choice because i needed to train for 2 weeks. i emailed her back if i can do the 2 weeks in a few weeks when i have my spring break so i can do the evening shifts then. she didn't reply yet. was i at fault here???
  6. I'm in my 2nd level of nursing. I've always been shy my entire life. I'm good when I'm talking 1:1 with the patient, but when it comes to post conference with my clinical group or presenting in front of the class, I totally get scared and nervous. I have to present a case study with my clinical group in front of my class in 1 week and I am so nervous. what can i do??
  7. I was sitting with a patient in the CCU. He didn't speak any English. He needed his oxygen mask or his sat level would drop tremendously. He tried to take off his mask at least 5 times every minute, and I am not exaggerating. He also tried taking his foley out, his leads for the ekg, and kept touching the central line area. It was a busy day for me which I didn't mind. However, about 10 minutes before my shift was over, the patient's wife and son comes. While they were putting on their isolation gowns, the sons tells me I could leave since they are here. I told them another sitter is coming in about 10 minutes and I will leave as soon as the sitter comes. I guess the son went to the bathroom and the wife came in. I gave her my seat. The patient took his oxygen mask off again a few times within those short few minutes. I was standing waiting for my relief and the son comes in and says, he is just trying to adjust the mask. I told him politely, that he isnt trying to adjust the mask because he takes it off. He then tells me with the biggest attitude that I can leave. I told him I would and I would tell the sitter when he/she comes and ask the nurse what to do, until then I would wait by the door. He tells me thank you in the most sarcastic way. there was another nurse in the room, the one who takes care of the patient's dialysis. I'm standing outside the door and that son asks the nurse, so the sitter is just here because my dad takes his oxygen off? and that nurse remained silent. i was just very angry. i know i'm there to do my job, but i was there to help his dad out. i wasn't playing around. I just feel like people think it's just a useless job.
  8. I got to sit for that same patient and I heard the rapid response team had to come for him. what happened to that nurse? he got fired.. they didn't tell me why..
  9. ALSO, if they were so concerned about the budget, then why not discharge me earlier on when they have seen the patient was fine? if you say every 4 hours, well i stayed the whole shift. AND..some say all we do is sit, sleep, watch tv, etc...HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE ROOM THE WHOLE TIME WE WERE THERE? i don't think so. that 5 minutes you happened to come into the room and you see us relaxing does not show that we are not doing our jobs.
  10. well, bluegrassRN, and others, I thank you for your input. I was shocked that nurse said he's always like that because two doors down in a different patient's room, that same nurse had to call the rapid response team. Why? because the nursing assistant went to get vitals on that patient, and he had chest pains. She told that same nurse and he told her, "he's just like that.." few minutes later, patient is having trouble breathing, doctors had to come, and the whole nine yard.. i understand that nurse saw the patient's chart, gave his meds, etc, but I'm sitting with his patient. I'm actually seeing what is going on, and when I told him about the patient's coughing..he didn't do anything. like you said, because the nurse already knows? then why was he shocked to hear about his status from that swall eval therapist? because he was talking to the patient's daughter, and he told her he was pretty shocked.
  11. ALSO, the patient kept coughing and had a lot of mucus. The patient kept spitting it out into the tissue papers I kept giving him. I told his nurse, and he says "oh..that's just how he is.." I was quite shocked. A few hours later, the swallow eval therapist came and she suctioned him. She had to change the diet and told the nurse what was going on. I was just shocked...goodness..
  12. sitter was discontinued after me. while i was leaving, the unit clerk came into the room to inform me that the sitter was d/c and she gave me a funny look. i told the nurse that the patient was coughing so much and he says.."oh that's just how he is..."
  13. thank you all.. I know I shouldn't let this bother me, but I just didn't feel appreciated. Since I am a nursing student, I know how to do the things that nursing assistants do, but I am not allowed to since it's my job. I really appreciate your comments. I feel much better.. thank you again.
  14. I work as a patient safety attendant (patient sitter) per diem and every other weekend. I sit with fall risk patients, patients who are suicidal, confused, tend to take off their IVs/nasal cannula, who need my assistance walking to the bathroom, etc. I thought it was a good idea to get my foot in the door since I am a nursing student. I need to wait a couple of months until I can work as a nursing assistant. I also graduated with a BS in biology and work other days in a bio lab. I was sitting with an older male today and I heard yesterday he was very agitated and almost hit/punched the nurse and the nursing assistant. Today, he was totally relaxed. He slept most of the time and I helped him in small ways. The patient's room is right in front of the nurse's station and he was in bed 1 so I can hear some of the conversations. The patient's nurse came in to give the patient the medication about 30 minutes before my shift ended. I hear another nurse ask him, "do you really need a sitter?" she asked him in a really sarcastic way. the patient's nurse went to the door and shrugged and said, seriously, no. The unit clerk laughed sarcastically and said, what's the point of having a sitter? Then the nurse who was outside says it's useless to have a sitter. They bickered and laughed while I'm listening to the whole thing. I grew extremely angry. I understand that the patient today was very calm, but I was there to help their patients out. I was not there to just relax. I didn't have the tv on, I'm not allowed to read or look at my phone so I paid close attention to the patient especially since he was in a respiratory floor. why say they need sitters and say we are useless, but when they need us, they call us up. I just felt very hurt..
