challenges in psych nursing.
You have the knowledge needed for the job. Once you start hands on it will be a breeze. In my hospital what your being hired for is called triage assessment. Its a good place to start cos what you know about these patients as an RN will help a lot when you become a provider of care. Good luck.

Lol Psychguy!!!! This is typical for most hospitals and i often wonder why they dont care to change. I have worked inpatient psych now for 4yrs. Congratulations on your program, am going through the same program with USI and will be through next year by Gods grace. If you can work in a psych inpatient just to get familiar with the setting and how we reach decisions on their treatment plan. Other than that you are not missing much except for brain drain by the end of the shift which makes you keep coming back for more..... lol.

Hi Sharpiemom i laughed when i read about the ride home. I now love my 37 mins ride home so much. I look forward to it at the end of my day. You'er right not to turn your back on patients, our patients can't be predicted. Its good to be familiar with our patients but not too familiar.

Thanks for this post. A good sense of humor can make a 12 hr shift not just go fast but less draning. Yes! It can be a good tool having in mind that some patients are very trying.

Hi K-Pax you are right it might never be cured but one of the biggest things we do include your point on safety. All through my shift it looks like safety is what we do. But l think when we empower our patients we are also doing a great thing. I went to a group home to a traning for their staff and guess what!!??? One of them was a patient that i took care of in my hospital. Girl i was like a proud mama. So empowering them is a great thing.

You are right MedChica leave work at work and not take it home. Sundowning is a very tough one. Girl that shift is hard. Am on day shift and though they are manic, some violent at night when most don't sleep will be hard. Good job lady.

I often wonder everytime am at work what will be best for my patient? As psych nurses at the end of the day when our brains are tired from all the barganing LOL, redirections and family dynamics of our patients have we really achived a goal. Have we reached out to someone? I want my fellow psych nurses to share how they cope with their day at work. Lets share our stories and words of encouragements. Lets go Nurses!!!!!

Info on USI Online
Hi am in USI PMHNP program, I got in summer,2012. You are right on those classes that seem to be the smae but this is the core classes for the graduate program. Their is 18credit hours of those Nursing 601,602,603,604,617,622 I hope I got it all but these classes are for all graduate students in the nursing program not considering the track you want to specialize on. After these core classes you will now enter you own specialty with it's related clinicals. This is a good school, their instructors so far based on my experience are awesome. I heared horrible stories on Patho way before I got accepted this class is a big deal for all graduate student no matter the school. Dr.Walsh took me in this class, I can't ask for a better instructor. The thing is start studying right away so the program don't run you over LOL I mean literally you have to be on your toes. The graduate nursing program at USI is a very serious and demanding program. Hope this helps. Goodluck.

Anyone successful in switching from psych to med/surg?
Have you tried going for internship, the hospital that takes you might not pay you as a 2yr nurse but they will train you for at least 6wks.
