Steps to my dream job in the NICU

Hello everyone! I am a senior nursing student and I will be done with nursing school May 2016. I've already started to apply to different jobs, and I've been very open, because I know everyone doesn't get exactly what they want fresh out. I've already received an offer on an ICU step down unit at one hospital, but I'm waiting on my number one hospital in the NICU! Recently, the HR consultant contacted me and asked would I be interested in mother/baby because NICU tends to fill up pretty quick. Of course I didn't turn down the opportunity to get my foot in the door, so I agreed to also be considered for mother baby. I guess my main question is, which specialty would be a better stepping stone to get into the NICU? ICU step down or mother/baby? I feel like the acute care portion would be awesome, but also already working with babies would be great as well. But then I'm sort of afraid to specialize so soon... I'm just all over the place. Thanks in advance for your input! :)

It was 722 people there according to one of the workers I spoke with. Soooo many people! Then I didn't know who I was even interviewing with until I sat down. And K1048 I did THE SAME exact thing. Accepted another offer at another hospital. What did you interview for?

  14. I'm a senior at Chamberlain. Love love it. I'm not sure where you're located, but I'm at the Atlanta campus and many of our graduates get jobs at the most reputable hospitals here... (Grady, Emory, etc.) I've also been hired as a nurse tech with Chamberlain on my resume... And they love me just as they love the other State schools. I came on here asking the same questions before I made my decision... BUT I took a leap out on faith and I did it... And I couldn't be happier with my decision. I was wait listed THREE TIMES trying to get into a nursing program here, and I was extremely tired of waiting... And I get the same education as everyone else. It's not like we sit on our butts and give money for our degree. It's hard... My life is pretty much non existent like any other nursing student... I feel prepared at clinicals, and the nurses speak very highly of us to our instructors. I'm not saying Chamberlain is the best, but I'm just trying to give you a snapshot of what it's like. The only downfall is the price. Now that SUCKS. Lol. But I took all my prerequisite classes at a State school so I cut my cost of attendance tremendously. But good luck with your decision. :) .

    Med Surg

If you can, purchase "Med surge success"! My test went up an entire letter grade after going through the questions in that book. Testing your knowledge is a great way to prepare! It's pretty cheap on Amazon. Good Luck!!!
