I thought I'd just tag on to what LookingAhead and Doula Kerry said since they gave some great advice already...I agree with lookingahead in that the statement and letters of reference are really important. In my case, I had no previous experience with anything birth related, nor even nursing related, but I think my essay showed that I am really passionate about supporting and providing for women. I think they are looking for potential, and not necessarily previous experience. It's really a match thing too...I felt really well matched for Columbia in particular. I applied to Yale and wasn't accepted...and the truth is that I couldn't really see myself there anyway, they probably thought the same thing! Also... IMO having billions of hours of related experience doesn't necessarily mean anything unless your essay reflects what you got out of it. In my personal opinion, I'd say that 10 hours of seriously meaningful experience can be more important than any amount of uninspired volunteering or work. I would look to get involved with something you are really passionate about, it doesn't have to be involving midwifery (for example I volunteered in a women's shelter) but something that will really give you something solid and meaningful to write about, or if you already have something going on along those lines, get involved with something you haven't yet. Also, like Doula Kerry said, letters are important and who writes them are even more important...a really great letter by someone who is reputable and reliable, and who really knows you personally is essential. And again, I second what the previous posters said, all great advice! Wishing you the best!

I am definitely attending visiting day, and I'm so in for margs! I think that bringing family or friends for the visit is a great idea, my momma is coming with me because I don't think I could brave the city alone yet. About housing...I really hope to get into the dorms, at least for the first summer semester to get familiar with the campus and the city before choosing an apt...and to find a roommate in the program. On past forums students seemed to really benefit from the dorms. NYC will be a big change for me also, as I am from a small town in south florida, and went to undergrad in a pretty small town too. But if the dorms don't work out I would absolutely be looking for roommates within the program (preferablly those who love cats, I have two!) alexa129, midwifery is a competitive specialty and I've heard that they are strict about the number of students they accept. Congrats on getting in for something else! if you didnt have your heart set on it then you'll probably find another speciality you'll really enjoy. If in the future, during the first year you find that you couldn't see yourself anywhere else and really feel passionate about midwifery you can always reapply and by then you might be familiar with the professors and so on and you'll have a better shot of switching into it. There are some posts about this on past ETP threads that you might find helpful. Again, congrats!!

1923, thanks for the info. I figured as much about midwifery, though I would love to get experience while in school (and make some money so I'm not poor poor poor!). I've seen some posts on an saying that L&D is super competitive, especially as a new RN...but I'm sure that it's highly variable from state to state, hospital to hospital, and you might just get lucky too, couldn't hurt to try when the time comes, (though I'd venture to say your lottery estimation is probably dead on lol). I am also wondering about working as an RN during the masters portion. I read somewhere that some of the masters programs want you to work, while others won't let you or at least frown upon it. I am wondering if anyone knows if you can/should work during midwifery masters?

Firstly, goodluck to all those waiting! I am an accepted ED applicant and I remember how stressful and exhausting the wait for decisions was. I applied to Yale and did not even get an interview so I had all but completely convinced myself that I wouldn't be offered admission to Columbia either (even though Columbia was my top choice and I felt more compatible with CUSON) so getting in (and for Midwifery, YAY) was the best news I think I've ever gotten. As for stats, I will share mine though I am sure that my essay had the most weight gpa: 3.3, recently graduated from FSU, BS in bio and women's studies new GRE scores: 156 and 159 The chunk of my volunteering was at two hospitals and for a battered women's shelter I don't have any nursing experience, as my interest in midwifery is a relatively recent development, but I've always been passionate about medicine and women's wellbeing. I am excited to find out who else will be in this ETP class! Goodluck everyone :)

FAFSA is stressful!! I'm estimating most of the financial info based on previous years, since it is so early to be having to fill it out. And I am pretty sure that I marked 2nd Bachelors, since this FAFSA only counts for one year, and we are technically getting a 2nd bachelors during that year, that was my reasoning but not sure if thats what we are supposed to do. Anyone have info about the SAR forms...im still confused as to what that is and where we get it.

Yes this is for early decision, we recieved an email to have the FAFSA and SAR filled out but the 4th, and the school is closed until tomorrow, so it has been somewhat frustrating without being able to call with questions. I am definitely decided on Columbia so I am not in the same boat about the undergrad/grad thing...but if you will get the more money marking undergrad I would do that, maybe you can go back and change it later.

Hi all, I was wondering if anoyone else is working on the FAFSA/SAR forms and where you find the SAR, I read that after you submit FAFSA it takes several weeks before you recieve the SAR, but Columbia said in their letter that they wanted everything sent in by the 4th, how will this be possible? Any insight is much appreciated, thanks!
