  1. Not to be rude or anything. But based on the way many people here lament about bedside nursing and the current state of hospitals, is it any wonder that some new grads are trying to avoid that environment??? Coupled with negative experiences during clinicals/externships I am not shocked many people are seeking non-bedside careers off the bat.
  2. Wow guys. Thanks you so much for the input. I was so split on this all week. I spoke to the recruiter and apparently there is a position open (job share) I'd work 35 hours in a two week, in the evening on the same floor. So I could possibly work there after work. Would it be unwise to work two jobs?... Otherwise, yeah I am just going to take the PHN position and go with my gut. Thanks guys again (wish I had posted this thread earlier)
  3. Community and Public Health and/or clinic setting. I would like to even work overseas at some point. But I feel that regardless of my goals, the skills and critical thinking in the acute setting are fundamental. am I correct in this thinking?
  4. Hello. I graduate with my BSN in two weeks and I have an offer at a very large and well known hospital where I will be working on a medicine floor. Obviously medsurg is not my "passion" but I really wanted to work on a general floor and gain 1-2 years experience so I can possibly relocate. The second job offer is at the health department. I'd be doing one of the home visiting programs with low income pregnant women. I was able to get this job by networking and meeting with the nursing supervisor. This health department job is something I am very interested in, however I feel that I will hurt my career down the line without having new grad hospital experience. I will be starting on the medsurg floor on May 31st and the health department job would possibly begin around August/September (government is slow). Obviously at this point I need to pick one, I can't have two full time jobs but I am really concerned about not making the choice now and regretting it. Thanks!
  5. This semester is my first clinical so I am a bit anxious. School begins on August 27th for us and most people are not aware of their clinical location at this point. Since I was on campus today I decided to ask the Clinical Coordinator about it. Her first response was "what difference does it make?" I know I will be carpooling with people so there's that. Also one clinical location is Spanish speaking and I am not proficient in Spanish at all; I'd need to brush up if that was the case.... Also, just general curiosity. She eventually said they were still trying to figure things out and she had two places narrowed down. Maybe I was a bit naive to go in and ask, I didn't realize it was so complicated on their end.
  6. You're right. And thanks. And no I am no high school senior by the way, and nor do I want to really become a CRNA I was just curious because like the second person said almost every nursing student I've met said they wanted to become a CRNA or showed some interest.
  7. Kind of what I was thinking. The same applies for a BSN. Many want it but at the same time many will not make it. People hear the salary and how many years it takes and get excited. And also my state's only CRNA 10 spot program that I mentioned earlier is fulltime, no exceptions.
  8. Interesting. Did the recession not hit VA bad?
  9. I think this whole tangent was because of this misunderstanding. I did not know he meant what "area" of the country I thought he asked me simply what country. lol
  10. You get a lot of experience from that. You should do it.
  11. You answered yes to a very direct question, I assumed you knew the answer but I guess not. And, the "also" in my title is referring to the already know RN oversaturation of course it will be brought up here.
  12. CRNA's. She just said RN's oversaturation was a regional problem not a national one, and if so I wanted to know which regions were not hit then. I was making a point in relation to CRNA oversaturation which she claims is regional also.
  13. What region isn't oversaturated then for RN's ?
  14. the RN oversaturation is a regional thing?
  15. Right but for instance my state has only one CRNA program that admits only 10 people a year. And some states don't have one at all...
  16. I understand. But the thing is I doubt I will be anywhere near fluent with simply minoring in Spanish. I would have to double major. And language is very hard to grasp the older you become :)
  17. Are minors a huge deciding factor in the grand scheme of things? Lots of girls are doing psychology or Spanish. To be frank neither of those things interest me. Psychology is very boring to me...I guess it's because it's not very concrete. And I would take Spanish but I haven't taken Spanish since the 7th grade and I was told college level Spanish was meant for those who took it in high school at least. In all honesty I'd like to take History because that's my 2nd love. But I am trying to think of things in terms of the future and what will be useful. Especially since I want to move back to California after I get my license. Any advice for a 1st year nursing student? :)
  18. I know this isn't a simple question to ask but I'm a high school senior who's going to Nursing School in the fall and once I graduate I was wondering what cities would would be the best to work and relocate afterwords. I was thinking Chicago because my family is from there and it's two hours away. Are there any other cities?
  19. Oh wow thanks that's helpful. I have a question, do you have a family? I keep thinking of things as me being single without any children, I know life is unexpected but I know I want kids in my late 20's (like 28), and a child alone a lot of money. Just curious.
  20. Make sense, but as a single person with no family is that is still pretty good pay?
  21. I want to go into nursing school and get my BSN. I want to do everything in state because it's cheaper. But my plan is to be a nurse and either move to New York or the west coast. I have been researching the pay for New York nurses and its substantially high. My question is, is it hard to be a nurse there? The pay is really high I noticed there must be a reason.... I'm not doing nursing for the pay only, I was simply looking how much I would be making and where I could reside after school.
