  1. I'm attempting to complete my capstone project for the MSN program. I have a couple issues I'm running in to. First, I need to obtain formal written permission to conduct my research which for some reason is much harder than I ever anticipated. Second, my capstone project focuses on medical professionals with hearing loss and how they cope with communication barriers, but due to the issue surrounding written permission I'm not able to even recruit participants which means I can't even gauge what kind of interest there is in terms of individuals who might like to participate. So my question is, how do I gain written permission from organizations geared to the individuals my study will focus upon? I've tried emailing several of them with no luck so far. Of the couple I did get a response from, they were not willing to give me a formal letter of approval. I'm stuck at this point....so close to graduating, but if something doesn't happen soon I will not have enough time left in this term to conduct my research. Any advice? Suggestions? I would really appreciate any input you all might have.
  2. If I were your patient I would be much more concerned with the care you provide, besides would you care if your patient was so called ugly? I have gotten some funny looks when I walked into a room,I wear bilateral hearing aides and was diagnosed with a mild form of Treacher Collins Syndrome (if you don't know what that is....look it up). That's just my outer shell and has nothing to do with the real me and my ability as a nurse. I'm a damn good nurse and I give good patient care....at the end of the day that's all that matters to me. If a patient wants pretty...he ain't getting it from me, but if I'm their nurse they can be sure they will get quality care.
  3. I still have hearing issues even with my hearing aides. I have a hard time understanding speech especially from those who have accents or voices with a high pitch. Background noise is another big issue I deal with. So even though hearing aides amplify sound, they are not a cure all for hearing loss. I don't necessarily find it embarrassing to have ask people to repeat themselves, but I do find it frustrating as I'm sure it is for them as well. Thanks for replying to my post.
  4. I'm a RN with bilateral moderate hearing loss and wear BTE's. I've been a nurse 5 years with the majority of that spent in Adolescent Psych. Due to a move back to Ohio from NC I had to leave that position which I absolutely loved. I've searched in Ohio for the same kind of work with no luck. So I decided to expand my search and pretty much have applied for any and every nursing job within a 30 min. commute. I have an interview scheduled tomorrow at a LTC but I'm wondering if it will be a good fit for me with my hearing loss. Does anyone have any experience working in LTC with a disability or know someone who has? I would love to hear about your experience.
  5. I'm looking to have nurses participate in a survey answering questions in hopes of gaining insight in how nurses cope with job related stress.
  6. I'm in the MSN-Education program at WGU. I'm entering my last term on July 1st, this will be the term I complete my capstone research project. For most students the research is conducted at their present place of employment to make things simpler, however I'm currently unemployed after moving back to Ohio a few months ago. So here's my dilema....my mentor has suggested that I conduct my research online asking nurses to fill out a simple survey, but before I can start that process I would need written formal permission from the site owner so that I may post a request for nurses to participate in my project. The written approval has to be in a formal letter because it will take the place of IRB approval that other students will be required to obtain. I have sent out several emails with very little feedback. I got one response and that person didn't feel comfortable sending me a formal letter giving me permission. Any ideas as to how I can go about this? I'm starting to get a little nervous as to whether or not I'll be able to actually start my capstone at this point. Any help you guys can give me will be appreciated.
  7. Thank you for all the positive replies....so far it's going pretty good.
  8. I start a new job in the morning....in a little over 7 hours to be exact. So instead of sleeping and getting my rest I'm wide awake nervous and full of worry. I'm hard of hearing....I wear bilateral hearing aids and haven't disclosed my condition to my new employer. I found in the past that when I was open during the interview that 9 times out of 10 I wouldn't get a call back so I began covering up my aids and not saying a word until after I got hired. It's always a little nerve racking being the new kid on the block, but being the new kid and having a disability makes things even harder. I do pretty well for the most part, like so many hard of hearing individuals , my weakness is with soft voices and very thick accents. I'm nervous because I do not know what my new employer's reaction will be. I have work at places that were horrible after finding out about my hearing and I have most recently worked at a place that bent over backwards to help me in any way. I'm not sure which of the two this new place will be. So here I am wide awake when I should be asleep worried about something that really is beyond my control. I guess there is no real question in my post, I only needed to voice my concern. Crossing my fingers it all goes well tomorrow (or should I say later today)....wish me luck!!!!!
