ljenki328, what unit were you hired for? and what form of transportation will you be using to get to work? I currently have a car up here with me but I live downtown and I'm debating on using the metro or shuttles which are easy to access to get to Hopkins rather than driving.

The e-mail came either a day or two at most after I got my official e-mail offer ( I was extended a verbal offer initially the day of my interview). That day I received an e-mail with how to set up the OHS appointment. And the nurse recruitment team (like NR team 4 is who I've been working with) is really good with communicating with you if you have any questions. Best of luck to you!

@MajesticRN I was offered the position at the very end of September but I had an interview the next day with Meyer 3 (a general psychiatric unit) and was offered a RN NCI position in my unit of choice so I declined it. If you graduated from school already you need to get an official transcript and bring it in the MBON unopened so you have verification that you have graduated, bring a copy of your RN license as well. I was in the process of doing that when the next day I was immediately offered my RN position. With a RN license there's no way they should make you retrain.

Okay I was almost hired for that position and did not have a CNA license at the time so DO NOT worry. Following a job offer, just go to the Maryland Board of Nursing (the CNA department) and apply in person. It will make things a lot simpler!

Congratulations! It feels surreal, doesn't it?! When do you start orientation?! I hope my orientation group will be a fun close knit group because with the SPRING program you're stuck for a year with each other! haha

Hey! Congrats on your job! Unfortunately I only know a few people and they all have roommates as of now. I live at the Avalon Centerpoint apartment complex downtown. It's two blocks up from Pratt St. and less than two miles from JHH. I love the convenience of it being right there downtown. Avalon Centerpoint has a ton of young professionals and medical students so it's not noisy and VERY SAFE. I start orientation in two weeks so if I hear of any other new grad that will be needing a roommate during that time I'll keep you posted!

No it's really easy once you get on Orleans St. (But I live in DT Baltimore so it's like less than 2miles away). Once you get in the parking tower it's very easy to find nurse recruitment and there are several HELP/receptionist counters throughout the outpatient facility which will guide you to the nurse recruitment office. No it really wasn't an hour with recruitment. When you first get there they ask if you brought anything that they might have requested, like letters of recommendation, transcript, copy of RN license, etc. Then they'll bring you to a little wait room where I met several other applicants (it helps you relax once you start talking to other people who are in the same position you are). And the nurse recruiter basically goes over a little bit of what position you are interviewing for, your unit etc. and they'll also really quickly cover some of the benefits (my recruiter talked so quickly I barely understood everything but they give you a folder with all of the information to read up on at a later time). It's really good to communicate with the recruiter about any other positions available. Like I was set up for two UAP/RN interviews that day initially and one had to cancel so my recruiter asked if there was any other interests I had. I told her psych and she immediately set me up for an interview for the following Tuesday (where I got the RN NC I position). So keep an open communication with your recruiter. I don't know about y'all but I made an effort to show her how genuinely interested and thankful I was in this opportunity so she really responded to that. Any other questions? I'm flying back home to New Orleans to get the rest of my stuff before orientation starts. I still feel like I'm floating on a bubble because I finally have a job. haha. Y'all will do fine the recruitment staff at Johns Hopkins is superb.

Yes we actually moved up here September 16. I'm from New Orleans, moved to the D.C. with two of my classmates (both RNs) but none of us had that much luck with jobs so we decided Baltimore would have more opportunities for us. I've got one roommate at UMMC and one at Sinai who both just started this past week. Aooarently the MDBON is a lot slower than the VABON so it's best that you got the temporary license because it can take a while for the permanent license to come in. Just an FYI are you looking for apartments or houses? I live with two other RNs (a couple) and we're splitting a two bedroom apt 3 ways at the Avalon Centerpoint in downtown Baltimore. It's less than 2 miles from the hospital. Rent isn't that bad, just parking is a little expensive.

AH congrats! What unit did you get a job in? I just met two other new grads who will be starting on Halloween as well when I went to get my physical and go to the M Board of Nursing for compact endorsement. I don't think anyone knows excatly how the SPRING program works. I'm sure we'll find out more information during orientation. The first two days are general orientation and I believe the Wednesday of our first week is just new graduates. So I'm sure they will explain it all then. My job offer says day/night rotation but it probably depends on who's orienting you and what their schedule is like. I know we have "class" every month but I dont know if it's weekly or every other week, etc. We start in three weeks and I have everything completed (I believe) but I still feel like I'm missing something. haha

haha definitely use that as a weakness...it makes them laugh. 4A is a great place to start off in. Once you're in with Hopkins it's a lot easier to work on another unit then trying to get into the hospital. One good thing for you to know is that the next group of UAP/RN positions orienting is November 7. So if you did get the job you would have less than a month till orientation since the deadline for any unit to extend an offer for the November 7 start date is October 14, next Friday!

I was offered the UAP position which I was really grateful for but when I knew I had an interview with the psych unit I could not pass that up. Psych and OB/PEDS are my two main interests (as of now) and I am not going to be one of those boring nurses who do nothing. I actually like work, I love psych, and I'm pretty social so I like working with psych patients. Plus Hopkins psych. department is on another level compared to what I'm used to back in Louisiana. They're building a new Psych/ED, they have an eating disorder unit, they have an intensive treatment unit, and a schizophrenia unit. In addition they have an adolescent psych unit which I really want to work on too. So I'm pretty excited! I'm not sure if I'm eventually going to go back to school for MD or NP for psych specifically so this is not going to be some petty job for me. haha On the unit description it talks about head and neck cancer, but it's for the surgical aspect of it. Not the chemo aspect of it. The nurses that I shadowed only had surgical patients. I saw 5 patients with traches that day. And there's a lot because of the otolaryngological surgical patients. That and GI sx is what 4a specifically sees but they do have other types of pts. Weinberg 4c and 4d focus on other things but do see other similar patients, like Weinberg 4c focuses on GI sx more than 4a does. But before my interview I thought it was going to be oncology from a medical perspective. And I did not mean to scare you about the interview. That interview was a 1:1 interview with the NM. It was a very relaxed environment. and it wasn't three pages of questions back and front. The questions were spaced out on the pages so she could write notes about my responses I'm assuming so DO NOT WORRY. The one questions I didnt expect was along the lines of "if a fairy godmother could take away 3 weaknesses what would they be ?" I always had picked out 1 or 2 things but the third weakness I really went of tangent, lol, but one thing that on another interview an experience nurse told me to say was that I'm not bilingual. haha.

haha yes Weinberg4a was my first interview...I liked it but pysch is my primary choice so when I was offered the RN position I couldn't pass it up. Think of Weinberg4a as like a surgical floor. It's not really surgical oncology so don't research it. haha. Just know about the unit. THat's the interview where she had like 3 pages of questions to ask me and I was not as prepared for this interview with the notes as I was for my psych interview. I was nervous but the nures manager was so calm and it was a very relaxed environment. I even discussed my interest with oncology but she reinforced that it was a surgical unit. It's a TON of trache patients, which is something I had barely any experience with in clinicals. When is your interview?

Haha no you're fine! Haha are you interviewing for a surgical oncology unit like Weinberg 4a? What I did was actually type the unit specifically in a search engine and the nurse managers name popped up, the nurse:patient ratio popped up, general info about the unit an what patients furthest popped up. Also, make sure you know that they are MAGNET accredited and any other awards that the department you're interviewing in may have been awarded..... The tun around is typically fast. But the unit where I accepted the job offer I actually told them that I had another job offer from another unit but that I wanted this unit specifically. So I found out the same day I interviewed. The unit previously extended me an offer 2 days after my interview. If you have any other questions just let me know !you'll be fine! Oh and I one thing that made me more relaxed and prepared in the interview was that I brought a list of questions I made to ask about the unit and I brought in an attached card with little bullets of info on the unit to help me stay focused! I really think that helped me show the nurse managers ghat I was prepared and very interested for the position.

Congratulations! First and foremost relax. Yes, dress appropriately for your interview in business attire and bring a change of scrubs and shoes in another bag (I brought my purse and a bookbag). Every other nurse interviewing did the same that day, so it is definitely not "tacky." I initially applied for the UAP/RN positions since I just graduated in May with a BSN. My first day was like yours, 9-5 but my second interview got cancelled the Monday before my Friday interview. Sharetime is really good on the units, treat it as an interview and make sure you are very friendly with the staff. When I arrived for my first interview my recruiter told me that another UAP/RN position opened up on my first unit of choice. So following my initial interview I was given an offer the position but waited for my second interview. I landed a RN NC1 position and apparently it happens a lot. I met another person starting orientation with me on Halloween who had the same thing happen to her. Apparently the UAP/RN position can go up to 90 days or longer but it depends on how you're doing, how your nurse managers and preceptors think your doing, etc. I wasn't asked that many clinical questions but my first interview was pretty intense (I had previously had only one interview for another small hospital out of state) and on the unit where I actually got the job I was interviewed by three staff members at once which was a first. So definitely prepare for the interview and research that unit specifically. Any other questions?

mel101478...yes I'm a new grad, I just graduated in May and I do have a bSN..... I was licensed in Virgiia (which is part of the compact states) before I started applying to Virginia....

I just moved up to Baltimore from Louisiana less than three weeks ago and within the past month my 1 of my roomates got a job at Sinai hospital, the other got a job at UMMC, and I just got a job at Johns Hopkins...all starting off with RN NCI positions....so it is possible....

If you look on the nursing website for Hopkins Ithink there's a general orientation for all new hospital hires the first two days and then Wednesday would be for new graduates but I'm not exactly sure. I know that no matter how Long your units orientation is the SPRING program is definitely a year long and I think that all the new graduates of October would be in the same group for that year, but this is me guessing. There's some info on the Hopkins nursing site about the first two days of orientation but I still feel that there is so much stuff I'm unaware of. After my physical Monday when I go the nurse recruitment team I'm sure they'll explain the process more in-depth!

That's exactly what happened with me and the Meyer 3 position about initially interviewing for the RN/UAP position then it turning out for a RN postion. I'm still in disbelief because I finally have a job! haha I did like Weinberg, the staff all seemed very upbeat. And I was going to use that position to basically get my foot in the door. But the moment I stepped foot on Meyer 3 I KNEW that I was going to work there. My two biggest passions are psych (specifically adolescents, psych/ed, and eating disorders) and OB/PEDS too so we'll see how everything goes once I get more experience with the psychiatric department. Regardless, every employee I've met throughout the hospital all seemed that internal positions are much more accessible once you've completed the SPRING program.

Ah congrats--is that the UAP/RN position? I interviewed for a Weinberg position last week but I was waiting to respond to a job offer till my interview last week with Meyer 3, a general psychiatric unit when I was offered the NCI position.My OH appointment is next Monday too! haha.I feel like there's no time before I start orientation. Are you currently living in Baltimore?

The psychiatric department is outstanding at Hopkins. Meyer 9 is part of the psychiatric building. I just got a job at Meyer 3-General Psych unit (my first unit of choice) so I can eventually move up and work in the Intensive Treatment Unit and the Psych/ED. Treat your shadow experience as an interview. Ask questions. Show them you're interested. Get to know everyone on the unit!!!

I applied for several jobs and within less than a week I was contacted by HR; informing me about the UAP/RN position. Good news about the UAP/RN positions is that they typically run around 18.35/hr with shift differentials--I did graduate with a BSN so I'm not sure about AD in comparison. Whenever you go in for your interview definitely talk to the nurse recruiters about what units you're specifically interested in too, because in case something comes up on one of the units and the Nurse Manager has to cancel you show interest for a specific position. If I'm correct my recruiter told me that they'll give you three chances of obtaining a UAP/RN position on various units. Is anyone starting orientation in October?
