  1. Night shifters do not mind it near as much as day workers because they do not work near as hard. Not had to figure out.
  2. Nurses, as a group, are up there in age. To work them on 12 hour shifts is to physically abuse them and burn them out. Actually, many of the younger nurses feel the same. There is no good argument for working nurses 12 hours. It is dangerous for the patients and bad on the nurses bodies (even for those not smart enough to realize it). As for me, I will work an 8 hour shift or I will not work at all.
  3. How would like a nurse on her 11th hour at work taking care of you with a heart attack? 12 hour shifts are dangerous for the patients and bad on the health of the nurses. For those nurses that like it for the extra time off, they are thinking of themselves and not their patients. Nurses are not very bright as a group. I have heard it stated that we need 12 hour shifts because of a nursing shortage. Not very bright huh? Why not demand safe 8 hour shifts and get overtime for everything over 8 hours? 12 hour shifts are for loosers in every way.
  4. those persons teaching your courses that are usingmynursingkit obviously do not care about the quality of their teaching. atleast, if the mynursingkit used at your university is the same quality as thatused at the university i am attending. my experience with mynursingkit is thatit contained many errors. this distracted from the learning process. you wouldthink a nursing program would properly evaluate a product before using it - andrequiring student to purchase it. it is particularly odd when those teaching thecourses promote themselves as being "critical thinkers."
  5. when i hear the term “poster presentation” it causes me to pause. this is an oxymoron. is not a poster meant to stand by itself? is it meant to be placed on a person’s back or carried constantly by a person while he/she simultaneously expounds on what is already visible on the poster? is it useless without a commentator? while many professional groups may on occasion use poster presentations, nurses commonly use such presentations. in fact, nurses become excited in the extreme at the thought of poster presentations. to nurses, poster presentations represent self-actualization. they are the zenith of educational achievement. don’t laugh – it is true. while attending nursing school a large part of our grade in a class was based on the completion of a poster presentation. during this time, i was asked by friends, over lunch, what i was doing in my college nursing class. i stated we were drawing posters. my friends began to laugh. i had thought it was a juvenile thing to do myself, but it had not struck me until that moment just how juvenile it was. my friends thought i was joking and i explained that i was not. this caused me to think a little deeper about poster presentations. the definition of a poster is: a large, usually printed placard, bill, or announcement, often illustrated, that is posted to advertise or publicize something. [http://www.thefreedictionary.com] is a poster not meant to stand alone – to speak for itself? if not then why is it called a “poster”? to my mind, the measure of a poster is: does it (the poster, by itself) clearly inform the viewer of the subject it addresses. why else give its illustration any consideration? the “poster presentation” group feels a poster must have a mouthpiece. why bother with a poster then? say what you have to say. stand there and repeat it as each person passes by. frankly, i would prefer tinker toys, building blocks or even play dough to drawing/illustrating posters as a learning method. if not superior to posters, they are, at the least equal to posters as a teaching method. yes, they seem like immature ways to learn, but so does making posters. if i am to view your poster, then please keep silent – do not speak and interrupt my appraisal of it. unless it is so simplified that it does not engage my brain, in which case, you should classify it as visual aid for your oral presentation and not as a “poster.” make sense, give an oral presentation and use visual aids if you like or simply make a poster, post it and walk away.
  6. inresponse to your questions about midwestern state university in wichita falls, texas, i would say the following: a portion of the faculty does not practice what it teaches. for example:several of them put great emphasis on critical thinking -- but do not thinkcritically about their teaching at all. this nursing program definitely places quantity over quality. this is not justevident in their instruction, but some of the faculty actually told me thisdirectly. i havefound some of the instruction in this program to be the worst instruction ihave ever had. before you decide to attend this nursing program you shouldactually talk with some of its present students or recent graduates. i do not mean to sound too negative -- just telling it like it is.
  7. The "nursing culture" needs more males. I have been around nurses and nursing my entire adult life. I am now in my second semester of nursing school. I have always had respect for nurses (and still do). However, there are many aspects of the "culture of nursing" that I find reprehensible. The culture is extremely narcissistic.
