Hi guys I am a labor nurse pregnant with my first baby. I know that cord blood banking companies will give us discounts for banking with them. I was wondering if anyone could share the discount they recieved and the company they went with. I was told viacord is one of the few left giving medical discounts. Any ideas?

Hey, I am a new grad who wanted L&D very badly and I thought I would share my story to give hope to those who want in but have had a hard time getting in. I went to all my local hospitals RN recruiters and got information about where they accepted new grads (best thing I ever did). The last hospital I went to had openings in L&D and they didn't say they required experience. So I sat down with the RN recruiter, only to find out that the positions did require experience, and that their L&D only takes new grads infrequently. So she told me they did have openings on med/surg. Not for me, but I figured I need to interview because my chances for L&D are looking slim. Well I interviewed, thought it went well, but the RN manager never called. So I moved on. About 3 weeks later, the RN recruiter called said L&D was gonna take new grads and she thought of me first. I said, how come that RN manager in med/surg never called, I thought it went well, even though I didn't want the position. She told me that I had impressed her but she knew I would ditch her for L&D eventually. So just by impressing the RN recruiter and Med/surg RN manager, I landed myself a L&D position. So tell EVERYONE what you want to do, you never who has connections with who.

Hey everyone, I have been offered a weekend night postition in LDRP as a new grad. I am really excited about the job but I would like some advice. I am nervous because I have no children. I know that its not a huge deal but I would like someone who has been in my shoes to tell me how they felt and what helped them when they were dealing with moms. Also I was hoping someone could tell me the good things about working nights, because currently I have none, only bad things. Thanks

Have any of you PICU nurses heard that in order to deal with the stressors of PICU that lots of nurses turn to drugs, alcohol, or sexual addictions? I have heard this from a nurse manager of a PICU. I am certain that this in not the norm by any means but that there is an increased percentage in the PICU of these addictions?

Hey guys, I graduate from nursing school in may and I had my last clinical in the ER from 11a-11p saturday night. The day was busy and I was getting great experience putting IV's..like 30 in one shift, more than all of nursing school! Anyway, around 7 pm a guy in cardiac arrest was brought in, I got to do CPR!!! I was so nervous and shaky! But I did it. Unfortunately the man did not make it. I was okay, it was sad but I handled it well I thought. Well I got in my car at 11pm and it suddenly hit me that this guy died totally unexpected the day before easter. His family was so sad. I love the ER and will work there eventually. Does anyone remember their first CPR experience or patient death?? Thanks

If I want to get my PALS certification, do I have to be an actual RN or can I do this as a GN. I graduate from nursing school May 1, 2006 and I want to be able to place this on my resume. Anyone know?

Thanks so much for the words of advice. I am so nervous. I went out and bought a few books on cardiology and during my interview with the RN manager, I asked her about a good book on EKG's (she had already told me she would offer me the position :)) She said a book by the author "Dublin" but couldn't remember the name. Anyone know about or any other recommendations. She also told me she has 2 cardiology books written for physicians she would recommend. I don't even know where to start. Let me know of anything you experts know about..thanks!

Hi, I was offered a fellowship in a large teaching/county hospital and I am really excited but really nervous. Its 16 weeks and they seem to be very used to new graduates but I am so nervous about doing the wrong things or not being quick enough or learning fast enough. Did anyone start out in CCU as a new grad? DId you like it, or was it too challanging? I am also very nervous about faintin-- someone please calm my fears about this?? I never fainted in nursing school but I was always terrified I would. If I am doing the IV/changing the bloody dressing I am fine, but watching is another story. Any advice on these issues is greatly appreciated.

Hey, I am a nursing student at FCCJ. My only advice is that you should ask lots of questions about the avaliability of the LPN-RN program b.c I have a girl in my class who was an LPN but chose to do the RN program b.c she was not sure they would have the LPN-RN program. It depends if they have enough people any given term. Good Luck

Hey again, Sorry I have done all of my pre-reqs are the university of North Florida...their program for nursing school is super competitive (like 3.8 gpa or higher only) so I am transfering to FCCJ. However, search FCCJ on these sites and some other people have gone there...ask them...

Hey, I have applied to FCCJ and am awaiting admission. I took the PSB-NAT. I didn't think it was that hard. The hardest part was the reading comp. b.c the articles were written in the early 1900's and they wrote different than us. The science was the easiest for me but I had really good A+P and Micro teachers. Not much chem or physics. Just study up on beginning math...fraction conversions, decimals, etc. You can't use a calculator. Good Luck

In reference to food allergies, why are parents with babies under 6 months told not to feed solid foods? She is in a masters program to become a Registered Dietian so the answer should have to do with metabolics. thanks in advance

I volunteer in a NICU stepdown but got a chance to see the Level 3 NICU the other day. I must say nothing I imagined compared to the NICU babies I saw. I was wondered why were some of the babies chests thumping? They were on some machine that caused this. I thought it had to do with gaseous exchanges..is that right? I thought I wanted to work in NICU but it blew me away...did any current NICU nurses feel this way?

Hi Everyone, I am a 21 y.o. student who is waiting my accpetance from 3 schools of nursing. Here is my question: I want to be a L&D or NICU nurse. I am also interested in ER nursing. Howeve, I am not set on anything. I will keep an open mind through clinicals. My problem is that I have a chronic fainting problem when it comes to putting in IV's. I was a vet tech though HS and my AA in college. I used to pass out occasionally with them, but I was able to get over it for some reason. I am mostly scared of doing this repeatedly in school. It is not even like I talk myself into it, sometimes I do not have time to think about it before I feel that "I'm about to faint feeling". So what should I do? In the meantime I am volunteering as a Cuddler in the NICU at a local hospital, but I don't see any IV's there (Its the NICU stepdown/ feeder/grower). I also work at Student Health oncampus and I considered talking to the nurses there to see if I can watch them draw blood from patients but I think I would do better attempting it for myself than watching. So should I wait until I am in school and can practice? Have you teachers ever dealt with someone like me? I dread that time in nursing school. HELP!!

Hi, This post is for everyone with questions about both schools. For UNF, if you attend the school there is no application process except the interview. You tell them you want to be included in the class and if your gpa is in the top 100 of around 600-700 you get an interview. The interviews are conducted in a group setting. 6 or so to a group. There are generally 3 interviewees. One of them does not have anything to do with the school, they are generally just a community nurse. The questions are what you might imagine: "why do you want to be a nurse...blah blah blah". 48 are accepted. The letters go out as certified mail (only if you got in) So if you get something in the mail...you did not get an interview. (that part sucks). I did not get an interview. My g.p.a. is a 3.5. The reason I said I wish I had done my pre reqs at FCCJ or another CC was because in my gen chem class we had 170 people and 30 passed. I took it again the following semester. It was summer, there were maybe 60 and when I finished (with a C) there were maybe 20. Approximately 50 of those people were from my class the following semester. Very Frustrating. As for FCCJ, I am also waiting for my acceptance letter. I did well on the NAT, and have a 3.5 gpa. The letters come regular mail. I would not give up on the ADN for anyone. You do 16 months for it, then you can transfer IMMEDIATELY to UNF because they articulate and your BSN is only one year when done full time. Or you can work 2-3 years with an ADN and go straight for your MSN. (if your interested) UCF does this. Probably competitive though. Sorry so long, I just know that some of this imformation is hard to come by. AHHH, so tired of waiting!

Hey, Well I applied to UNF for this current fall start but did not get accepted. I have an A.A. from UNF. My problem with UNF is I did my first 2 years there and had some extremely hard teachers. They do not reward AT ALL for loyalty. So I could have gone to FCCJ and gotten a higher GPA and perhaps gotten in. But I didn't and therefore some students from other schools have higher GPAs and get in. FRUSTRATING! Anyway, I have applied to FCCJ and SJRCC for a january start. If I get in, I will go but I am also appling for UNF's summer start. I would have to quit and start over but it would still be faster than the RN-BSN track. Are you considering applying to FCCJ? I know they take a lot more applicants. UNF takes 48 twice a year out of 700 applicants. INSANE Good Luck!

My job description is to rock, cuddle and feed the babies that are temperature stable. I LOVE IT! I was wondering does anyone else know of hospitals that do this. I must say I feel pretty lucky that my hospital does this. Also it will look pretty good at my nursing interview...just an idea!
