  1. hello all!! so i passed my cna exam last week and now can go to clincals!! yay!!!!!!!!! now i can go to clincals. let me back track real quick. i'm 16 and in a magnet program to get my cna, anyway, today we went to the hospital for orientation. also, we all found out what units we will be on for our 40 hr week of clinicals and i am on the surgical unit! which i am so excited for and actually happy that i didn't get put in a different unit. i will be working with a cna and following him or her around, and assisting that person. surgical unit is a great unit to be on right? here are some questions i have: - do you love the surgical unit? - did it help you in your career path or help you want to be a nurse? - what does a cna do on the surgical unit exactly? ( i know some but not a lot). - it's probably one of the busiest units right? anyway, i am so excited and finally got out of being discourged and i am thinking of nursing again:) and i don't fo my clincals until june 18-22, 2012. i also hope i can apply for a job at the hospital as a cna in md, but i am 17 so i don't know if that would happen. however, they have internships where they gave it to a girl who was my age and said if we do well they will offer us a job. anyhow, thanks for reading, commenting, and answering! ~kayla:bugeyes:
  2. [color=#00ff00] hello everyone! so to start off i am sixteen and a junior in high school. i go to two high schools- one is normal high school and i am finishing up my last year over at my magnet (vocational) school for allied health cna. anyways, i have been discourged all this year due to having a terrible teacher who told us different concepts and just wasn't a great teacher. plus, i had this one boy who said i would make a terrible cna or nurse due to me lacking upper body strength and not being able to do bp well. anyways i have a yo- yo mind at the moment where i keep changing my mind from nursing to a criminalist and back to nursing (it keeps going back and forth). yet, last night i was thinking, hey i think i want to be a nurse because ever since i was little i have been fascinated with science and medical science. i used to play doctor and for halloween dress up as a doctor. i also love working with people ( i can be shy sometimes) and i want to make a difference. so tomorrow i take my cna licensure test! and if i get a 70 or higher than i pass, however i have to also pass the allied health final with a 70 or higher to move on to clinicals. i don't do clinicals until june 18-june 22 (7:00am-3:30pm). i hope going to clincals (if i pass both exams- i am sure i will) will help me decide would i like to do this as a living and help me see what a rn does too. i will be on the surgical unit. the only thing is i hate foul smelling stuff and i especially hate vomit ( i gag). anyway, based on some things i have said, could it be for me? also, do you love nursing? is there anyway i can over come the hating foul smells with vomit? how can i do bp better without hearing my hand move? do you have any suggestions, tips, or words of advice for if or when i do my clinicals? what are some of your favorite units of nursing you loved working in? anything else you want to add, please do. :) thanks so much, kayla:) p.s. i know i have time in the world to change my mind and can do it a zillion times before getting it right. oh i almost forgot, i start a half day of college next year as a senior in high school, what are some classes that i should get out of the way?
  3. I can't really work as a CNA until November 2013, when I am 18 and a freshman in College. And I know it isn't great to quit something unless you already tried it.
  4. Yeah I know a CNA and RN have different roles. However, I can always observe.
  5. hello all. i haven't posted a thread since last august... anyway this wednesday and thursday i take my cna licensure test and my allied health final over at my magnet school. plus i start my clinicals from june 18 to june 22 (7am-3:30pm). to be honest, i have mixed feelings. i don't feel prepared because i had a pretty crappy teacher who told us old nursing and cna practices/skills/teachings. plus she taught from powerpoints with no notes, rarely any homework, and rarely any classwork. when she taught skills she would give us a video to watch on youtube or an old video or show it with 28 kids standing around so not all of us could see. when we asked a question she wouldn't really help. anyway, this plus me being a weakling (i can't lift heavy things at all) made me very discourged and made re- think going into the nursing field. i was super excited back in august and now i am like blah- don't care mode. i mean i feel like i would hate dealing with rude pts who try to find everything wrong with the care you give. also, i can't stand vomit- i start gagging, i'm fine with everything else (okay some foul odors do make me gag). i have heard and read some horror stories from people and heard that people get burnt out from being an rn ( i don't want to be burnt out). there is a couple of people in my class who say i would make a terrible cna and rn because i am weak and can't really do bp well ( i have a hard time hearing and all i hear is my hand on the stethoscope {my hands are sort of unsteady}). some people say i would be a great cna or rn because i explain everything, can plan out pt. care, and can talk out decisions on what to do with the pt. i am sixteen and finishing up my last two weeks as a junior in high school and my last year over in my magnet school. i know i have some time to figure things out, but i hate feeling confused. i love working with people and talking to them (even though i can be shy). i have been told you can't show your emotions if let say a pt dies. anyway, do you all have any advice for me for my clinicals, how to get over my discourgment, etc. oh and i have questions! - do you regret becoming a cna/ rn? - what helps you going? -how do you deal with the things you hate? and anything else you can add can help- i just need some words of wisdom. p.s. i also have other careers in my mind like physician assistant or forensic scientist technician. i just want a career that i would love, where there is something new all the time, where i can work with others, and be around people. thanks for everything, kayla:)
  6. I do know that my program is under the board of nursing, and I'll make sure to see what the age is.
  7. yep and that's what I am planning to do and get maybe some maths and English too.
  8. I hope so...and I want to start sooner because I'll be 16 in November and once your 16 you can start community college but have to take the ACT. But, I'll probably wait until this school years up to do a heavy load in the summer and try to get a job at Quest as a temp (and my grandmother works there so she is going to help me land a job), and so yeah.
  9. Okie dokie's. Plus, when I am a Senior next school year I will be doing community college for half a day and I can start next summer, and I was thinking to start working on pre-reqa for my nursing degree, which can help me knock out lots of money and credits for when I go to University (I hope lol).
  10. Actually, I do know Pediatrics and the NICU are actually really hard to get in because lots of people want to go to those Units. I do have my mind open to other things like Cardio, but I do know I don't want to do ER/Trauma/OR because I can't stand major gory things...I can deal with certain things, but I don't think I would like to see a person with lets say an eye ball hanging from their socket, but overall I do have a strong stomach.
  11. Hi everyone! So, I'm new here and trying to get the gist of this site. But, anywho, I'm currently a Junior in High School ( school is closed today so that is why I'm writing this thread:D) and I am in a magnet program for Allied Health (CNA). I am qualified to get my CNA due to me passing off last years requirements for my Sophomore year which was to pass all midterms and finals with at least a C and same goes for each semester grade, and passing the certification in basic health science (which I passed yay! and barely people passed it). Okay back to what I am saying is I have some questions on the CNA and RN profession. I already know these two professions are two different things. Okay for the CNA questions- 1.) What units can a CNA work in? 2.) What is the average pay for a CNA in UT or MD? ( I live in MD and I'm either going to go to college in MD or UT). 3.) What is the age a CNA can start working at in MD? 4.) Is it worth becoming a CNA and then advancing to become a RN? 5.)Is there any other information to know before thinking twice about doing my CNA this year? 6.) What's the usual work schedules for a CNA? 7.) What is the worst and best units to work as a CNA? Okays know for RN questions- 1.) What is better to do get your ADN or BSN? Or like going to 2 yr college and transferring to a 4yr college? 2.) If I went to a hospital and told them I have a CNA and I am going to a 4 yr school to be a RN will the pay for my education? 3.) What is the worst unit to work in and the best to work in as a RN? 4.) Do you regret or wish you didn't become a RN? Or do you have a passion for it? 5.) Do you get breaks? 6.) What are the possible schedules for an RN?(As in shifts-hours-etc.) 7.) Is the NICU hard to get in and if they aren't hiring then what is the best to go to if you want to be a NICU nurse and same for CNA? 8.) How do you know what you truly want to specialize in or what unit you love to most? 9.) If I wanted to get my masters, could I become a NP and still be able to teach nursing? ( I want to get my masters like after 3-6 yrs of working as a RN). 10.) Anything I should know about being a RN? 11.) What is stress factor if you are a NICU nurse or any kind of nurse? Thanks for answering my questions, I know it's a pain in the butt to answer them! But, it is so much better to research and get different answers from people working in the medical field. So any how, I'll be looking forward to seeing all of your answers:D Thanks so much! ~Kayla:lol2:
