  1. I have recently moved to Las Vegas, NV from AZ. I came from a level 3 labor and delivery department that worked very seamlessly and it was a pleasure to work there. The L&D ratio was 1:1 which is so nice because let's face it is impossible to be 2 places at once when things are going bad on the fetal tracing. Also, the recovery was 1 hour and they were off to postpartum so you could get a new labor patient. we also had transition nurses who caught all our babies at our deliveries. Seamless. I moved to Las Vegas and got a job at Summerlin Medical Center in Labor and Delivery several weeks ago and wow what a wake-up call it has been. 2:1 pt ratios and the staffing is so bad that other nurses can't even watch your second patient most the time because they have 2+ patients of their own already. Also the recovery of a delivered patient can last forever due to post partum not having available rooms, which makes the ratios even higher due to so many delivered patients hanging out in labor and delivery all day. I also find that on top of having to do your job as a labor and delivery RN with 2+ patients it is common to have to do many secretary, OB tech and transition rn duties. There also seem to be alot of travelers and the communication between units seems terrible, communication between nurses is chectic and the whole place seems chaotic and unorganized at best. I have looked into maybe trying to get a job over at Sunrise Hospital however, it seems from what I can gather that all hospitals in las vegas are terrible as far as healthcare standards go, so not sure if it worth it to switch now or not. Is there any L&D nurses at sunrise who can tell me what a typical day/assignment looks like and what the expectations are like there? Thanks!
