Any young african american travel nurses?
Hi all, I am AA and 27 years old currently on my first assignment in San Diego. I love it here. The people have been very receptive, the weather is great, and my housing is beautiful. I am also a single parent traveling with two children. So far so good and I was offered an extension during my 3rd week. When I first got here someone told me that they weren't very receptive to black nurses but I have not had an issue with anybody.

checklist for travelers
If there is anyway you could fly out to Cali to do the live scan and turn in your application directly to the board I would suggest doing it that way. I flew out to California on 4/17 and turned in all of my documentation and was issued a permanent license on 4/19. People kept telling me the process was long but two days is the quickest I've ever gotten a license.

Does this sound fishy?
So I talked to my recruiter and she said that the contract she was sending to the hospital was a proposal for the hospital to agree to then once they got approval from the hospital they would give me a contract to sign. The co-pay for the upgraded housing was for a two bedroom. The company's standard is a one bedroom. But I have chosen to do the stipend instead because the co-pay was $450. She also said I needed to book my flight so she could submit for my reimbursement. So what do you think?

Does this sound fishy?
I was offered a position at a peds hospital in San Diego over the summer. I need to fly out to California to apply for a temp license. My recruiter emailed me today and asked whether or not I booked my flight so she could submit my contract. When I asked her if I could see my contract before I book the flight (so I know what the terms are), she said she needed my co pay for my upgraded housing and my flight itenerary before she can submit my contract. However I don't want to pay for a flight if this falls through or the contract isn't exactly what we discussed. This sounds a bit fishy to me. How can she submit a contract that I haven't seen or signed. When she told me about the official offer she told me that if I agreed, my verbal commitment was the primary agreement and my signed contract was the secondary. However the verbal agreement only included 10-hour days, not weekend or call. So please tell me what you think I should do about this. Thanks in advance

Travel extension
I am entering the world of travel nursing because I would like to eventually relocate just not really sure where. I have lived in Columbus, Oh my entire life and know with certainty that I do not want to stay here. Short of just picking a state and relocating, I feel like travel nursing will allow me to see any and everywhere before I make my final decision. Ideally, I would like to spend 3-6 months in a location to get a good feel for the area. I am also traveling with my children and feel the transition would be better for them if we stayed 6 months. My kids are great and actually take after me in respect to being flexible, adjusting well and very adventurous, so after much thought, research, and prayer I feel like this is a great move for my family and me. My son is actually excited about traveling around. Thanks for your input

Travel extension
Hello,To all of those who travel currently, how often is it that a hospital ask you to extend your contract? I know most assignments are 13 weeks in length but I am looking to stay in an area for 6 months at a time to cut down on how often my family and I travel. I am not opposed to changing more often but longer assignments are my preference. I'm just looking at my options or possibilities. Also in your experience which areas are more likely to extend?Thx

San Fransico VA
Let me add that I am a single mother of two with a little over a years experience in the OR. The position I applied for was an OR position and I do have student loans, child care cost, ect to consider. Thank you in advance for your feed back. Also if I were to live outside of SF what areas would be less costly but doable in the area. The shift is 11a-7p so would that cut down in traffic time? thank you

San Fransico VA
Hi all,Just a few questions to those of you familiar with the San Fran VA. Yesterday I had a phone interview with the San Fran VA and they where telling me how the VA nurses make less money than the outside nurses and sometimes when ppl move there to work they are unhappy because the cost of living is so high and they cannot afford to stay because of other financial commitments. However on the website usajobs.com where I found the position they listed they starting wage they listed was 85,000. So my question is what do nurses in San Fran make, and is 85,000/year enough to live in SF?

Georgia Board of Nursing
Are you getting your license through endorsement? If so then as long as you turn all of your paperwork in at once the process isn't bad. I suppose if you waited for everyone else to turn in the paperwork (I.E. your school and job) then it may take a while. I live in Ohio and collected all of my verification paperwork and submitted it with my application. I also got a paper finger print card from my local police dept and mailed it to Cogent (which is the company that runs your fingerprints for the board) if you go to their website it gives you this information. With that being said the board received my paperwork on July 28th and I got my approved license Aug 12th. So that's like 15 day... My advice... Don't rely on outside people to get your paperwork together. Do it yourself and save the waiting time.

Relocating and needing advice
Hi All, I have just received my license by endorsement last Friday :lol2:and am ready to start looking for work. A bit of my history... I am currently in Ohio (my state of origin) and I have been working as a OR nurse for the past 8 months (new grad). I really don't like the OR and would like to change to ICU, L&D, or MedSurg. The reason for my move is I have a grandmother in GA who is aging, as we all are, and I would like to move closer to her assist in her health care needs. :confused:So my question is do I have a shot at getting a job in one of those fields now even though all I have is 8 months experience? Or should I stick in the OR a little while longer then transfer? What's the best places to work? Don't be shy let me know what my chances are... And as always thank you in advance for all of your thoughts. PS... I will be relocating to the Warner Robins, Macon, Perry area (I'm not picky)
