  1. I'm really not thinking it's an automatic in... just wondering if hospital employees are considered more so than other grads. This hospital very rarely hires LPN's, so I'm not even thinking about working there right out of school. They do have an Urgent Care system however, that I know hires LPN's. I wouldn't dream of having a full-time job while in nursing school. It wouldn't work anyway. The program is M-F 8am - 2:30pm. Not conducive to a full-time job at all. I'd have to quit August. I was just talking to my husband about it and we were thinking that working in the hospital system for 10 months and then quitting might hurt more than it helps.
  2. So, I'm a SAHM for the tim. e being. Nursing school starts in August. I did find myself a part-time job, working 4 hours a day in the morning near my house. I figure it will help pay for Nursing School. Originally I was open to a part-time or full-time job but... my LO is only 13 months and I was kind of looking forward to spending the next 10 months with her for at least most of the day since I know that Nursing School get be intense. Well, I had applied to like 1000 jobs and today I finally got a call back from Florida Hospital. It's for a position called a "Patient Ambassador". It's mostly clerical in nature. I wish it were part-time but it's full-time. I haven't been offered the position or anything at this point... but I'm feeling very torn about working full-time right now. Is working with the hospital (this isn't IN the hospital it's but it's owned by the hospital) something that would be REALLY helpful to me in the future? I'll only be able to work until August and I'll be an LPN first... RN sometime in the future. If it's not going to help my future, I don't want to even bother.... what do you guys think?
  3. Hi everyone. I'm just in need of sharing my good news! Feel free to ignore me! I'm supposed to start an LPN program in August of 2012. I took my TEAS, got all my shots and tests, paperwork, references, interviews etc... My husband and I were going over our finances and it became clear that I didn't have the $5000 needed to pay for the program. As much as some people think that $5000 is such a small amount that a loan should be no problem, I cannot bring on another debt. I've been actively searching for a job with no luck, until today. I found the perfect job. It's the perfect hours, only 20 hours a week and more than enough to make my $5000 goal. It's with a friend AND in my neighborhood. I'm very happy that Nursing school is still in the cards! Ok, you can go back to your lives now :-)
  4. I'm a pre-nursing student who is slated to start LPN school in august. I've been recently dx'd with ADHD (predominately innattentive). I realize that I'm potentially limited in my career options. Are there any career tracks that would work well with an ADHD nurse? Am I setting myself up for failure?
  5. Yes. Now that I've been able to think about it for a few days, I realize my questions are different than this one because I already know where I stand in regards to loans and debt. What I'm really struggling with figuring out right now is, is it worth going to school now when I know I wont' be focusing on my career, really at all, for a few years. I mean, I might work a year or two in an attempt to pay down current debts and save some money but really, I plan to be a stay at home mom for a few years and then focus back on career stuff later (let's say 7 years or so). My thinking at first was that perhaps it would be easier to go to school younger and with only one child than a few years from now with 3 or 4 children. But.... I'm second guessing myself. Will I forget everything I've learned? How would I keep my license? I'm just torn between what will be harder? Catching up afterwards or going to school with a full brood of kids? Anyone have experience with either scenario? I have to decide what I'm doing before I drive my husband crazy lol
  6. Thanks. I wish we qualified for a PELL... we technically make too much but so much of our money goes towards debt we have little left over after bills, mortgage, etc. I'm really kind of stuck money wise. I haven't had much luck looking for a job, make too much for financial aid but owe student loans from both my husband and myself. I'm just not sure what to do. Debt can do awful things to a marriage, I'm unwilling to take on any more and feel foolish for have taken out the loans that I did at this point since, I never even finished college. As it stands (after sleeping on it) I know that if I do not have the money for school (cash in the bank) I will not be starting the program. Maybe I'll luck out and find a job. Nursing school isn't going anywhere. Maybe my inheritance will come in. Maybe I can find some quick program that will help me find a job... any job... so we can pay off these debts. A word to the wise.... avoid debt if you can help it.
  7. Thanks. To answer your question... I'm opposed to debt. I'm still digging myself out of on school loan. It's only 5k I know but, my inheritance check could take a month, a year, ten years... I kind of have to pretend it doesn't exist.
  8. Here's my dilemma. I'm 30, married with 1 kid. I'm currently unemployed mostly by choice. I've started looking for a job but it's slim pickings. I have an AA in General Studies that amounts to nothing and haven't worked since 2008. I've been accepted to an LPN program that starts in August. A 1 year program. After a talk with m hubby we determined that if I do not get an inheritance check by August (it's coming eventually) we cannot afford the $5000 tuition. I refuse to take out more loans. (I owe from a previous educational venture). To complicate matters, I really only intend to work for a year or two after I graduate (provided I find a job) and then I want more kids. Once my kids are all in school my intention was to focus On my career whether I go back to school at that point or not... Not sure. So now I'm torn. I can afford a health unit coordinator program that's only 4 months long and $1500. I could theoretically work for longer and go back to school later in life.... I'm just not sure. Would I lose my lisence for not working for a few years? How much less does a health unit coordinator make than an LPN? What would you do? If my I heritance DOES come in time... Should I wait anyway? Sorry if this isn't clear. I know I have to decide but I'm feeling lost about this. Thanks
  9. I didn't take the TABE since I have an AA but I did take the TEAS. It was 100% on the computer and harder than I thought it was going to be. It was harder than my study aid (McGraw Hill). I'm glad I studied though. I was worried I was going to fail but I got 80's and 90's overall. I say STUDY and then get there early. They'll give you the option to take the test after orientation. If you're ready go ahead and get the TABE out of the way. If you get there early, you can go to the "business" office (it's a cashier near admissions) and pay what you need to pay ahead of time. If you're not ready... study some more. You just need the math, reading and grammar. I now have all of my documents in order and I called O-Tech but had to leave a message. I'm so excited!
  10. I'm wondering if anyone else is either accepted or working on the requirements for the OTech LPN program for August of 2012? I'm just waiting on my medical forms and I'll be ready to hand stuff in to be put in the class. I know I'm early but I'm still scared they'll be full!
  11. Thanks so much! I appreciate it. I'm going to a psychiatrist in about 2 weeks for an evaluation and we'll see what happens from there.
  12. Hi everyone. I'm not a nurse (yet). I'm waiting for am LPN program to start and in the mean time I've been perusing the allnurses site :-) I have not officially been diagnosed with ADD but I'm fairly sure that I have it, or something. Really my WHOLE life I've felt like it takes 5x the effort for me to do the things that other people seem to do effortlessly. I'm always losing and misplacing things, my room growing up was a disaster, my house is always messy, I forget things, I'm always running late. I try to listen to people talk and my mind wanders even though I'm trying SO hard to listen. People tell me things and I'm not sure of what I heard later and have to ask. It's like I live in a fog. I have an appointment with a Psychiatrist in a few weeks (first available). We'll see how that goes. I'm comforted to know that there are those who are nurses with ADD and doing well. I believe that I dropped out of college many moons ago because I was afraid I couldn't hang as a teacher (my major at the time). There's hope! There's hope!
  13. My issue is I do not want to take out a loan. I still have debt from past student loans and I'm weary of putting even more debt on top of that. I'm going to try my best to earn or find as close to the $5000 I need in the next year. But we'll see. It's one of those things that SOUNDS easy...
  14. Hi. I'm looking to start an LPN program at Orlando Tech in August of 2012. It's a ways off, however, I'm worried about paying for it. I currently don't work but my husband does. We make "too much money" to qualify for most programs. But most of our money is tied up in mortgage and bills. We have a child and we own our house. Are there any financial aid programs for an LPN program that don't require you to demonstrate "financial need"? I mean, we're not needy at all, but it's not like I have $5000 just lying around. Suggestions?
