charge nurse/shift leader
I am a fairly new nurse and my nurse manager has put me in charge a couple of different times. Well, I have this one nurse who has been at the hospital longer than me (but is not the brightest light bulb in the stack) She proceeds to tell me how to do my job, makes out assignment before i can even get around to it---etc.... She acts like it makes her mad that i was put in charger before her-------she has never been in charge----(not exactly the strongest nurse) I did not ask to be put in charge---it just happened--but it makes it hard to do my job with all her bossy things she does. What should I do?

Reality Shock
:stone I started my first position on a Neuro med/surg unit in April, While I love Neuro Patients (most of the time)---I hate the nurse--patient ratio. I work nights and have had up tp 10-12 patients with one PCT. As many of you know most of the patients are confused as bed bugs, pull there IV's out, NGT out, foleys out---etc... This is my first position as a nurse, but was not really what I wanted to do. It was like my third choice. Ii drive an hour to and from work and only work weekends (which I like, because I have three small children) My question is---IS it too soon to know that this is not what I want to do? I have an interview at the hospital in my town (10 min drive) today for an ER staff nurse position. ER was one of my first choices of what I wanted to do. Am I getting in over my head as a new GRAD? I really need some honest answers about working in the ER vs floor nursing.

angry at nurse in pre employment screening
:angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire I am a new nurse. I have been offered a job and accepted it. I went to my pre-employment health assessment today. i had a 2 page form about do you have this or this or this etc.... I HAVE TO GET MY RECORDS AND SEE THEIR md BEFORE THEY WILL ALLOW ME TO WORK. well i was dx with MS 6 months into nursing school. I have no problems and have not had any problems. i am on Copaxone. The MS specialist i went to for a second opinion stated that i have probally had it for eight years and since it has been mild with just tingling/numbness and fatigue then it will more than likely not change. BUT OF COURSE WE ALL KNOW THAT IT CAN. THIS STUPID NURSE TOLD ME JUST BECAUSE I AM NOT DISABLED RIGHT NOW THAT I PROBALLY WILL BE SOONER OR LATER. I DO NOT HAVE TO BE TOLD THIS I AM QUITE AWARE OF IT. I WANTED TO KNOCK HER TEETH OUT. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST UNEDUCATED ON CERATIN THINGS AND NEED TO KEEP THEIR MOUTH SHUT.

What would you do?
I have just graduated and passed boards. I am ready to start working---but Iam not willing to just take any nursing job. I have been offered a job (first offer) but this is not something i want. pt/nurse ratio is 9/1 it is a med/ surg floor in a small hospital with adults and peds together. I now that if i take this job i wil not be happy---but what if nothing else comes available?

Decadron given in the deltoid muscle
Today I went to the doctor for this nasty URI (viral)--I was sick of coughing my head off. Anyway, the nurse CMA, or what ever she was gave me deadron in the deltoid muscle. When she came in I had alredy gotten ready to get it in the hip---but she said she could give it to me in the arm. I asked her if she was sure? she kinda of got huffy so i let her give it to me in the arm. Well, i am a senior nursing student and that just did not sit right with me---so i looked it up in my drug book. It can cause muscle atrophy, abscess if given in the arm. How do you (as nurses) decide where to give an injection?

Preceptor
I am down to the last weeks of my class. I have to pick three places to do my preceptorship in----I like L&D, Peds, Mom and baby, but I am also interested in peds oncology. What would you suggest?

How many nurses remember the actual theory?
i heard that you learn all this book stuff---but it does not click until you actual start working as a nurse. The things they teach us ---i might as well be able to do brain surgery. I did better in my OB and Peds classes than cardiac and GI. I am not a me surg person. The clinical part I made a 100%---but whne it comes to the book stuff----i just hate it.
