  1. Hello all, Just wondering if anyone has applied to the 2019 cycle of post-master's NP programs at UCSF? I know they are supposed to start the interview process March 20th, so has anyone heard if they are moving on yet? Anyone know what type of interview questions they would ask? Personally, I applied to the FNP track- I'm sure each specialty has different timelines. Thanks everyone, and good luck!
  2. Hello lovely nurses! Well, I'm a new grad nurse, as the title explains. I've been searching for a job for 6 months, and after being very patient, landed a position at a pediatric hospital on the hem/onc floor! It's my dream position, at my dream hospital. It was my last rotation in nursing school- I loved the staff and the patients. However, that rotation was for my master's, and I was in the managerial role (I did an entry-level master's program, and recieved my bachelors and masters all in one go). I will be working as a floor nurse. My senior capstone was also in pediatrics, but general med/surg, and that was about 1.5 years ago.... I have been working as a CNA in a pediatrics hospital, rotating to different units, and have spent some time in hem/onc. Obviously, I couldn't practice my nursing skills, but did pay attention and ask questions. They will train me, it is a new grad position. I was just hoping some of you had some suggestions as to materials I could read or go over that would help me prepare! Anything would help, I just want to get back into it and be as ready as I can! Thanks everyone!
  3. Orientation in a week.... Who's excited?! I can't find anywhere, did they say where we can park? See you guys there!
  4. leeezy- I had to respond by May 29. I'm not sure if that was specific to me though, because I recieved the acceptance email around May 14th. I had to fax my acceptance back (no mail or email option), but was in Disneyland at the time, so I had to use the hotel fax :) Went through fine, and then recieved my acceptance from the graduate division of SFSU, instructing me to fill out all the necessary paperwork and such. Sweedee- How did you find your place? I'm really only looking on craigslist. It seems impossible to find a place IN the city on there for around $1000-$1300. It would be my boyfriend and I, and 2 cats. (I'll probably only say we have 1...) All I can find are across the bay, which kind of scares me because all I hear are horrible things about the commute and how expensive it is. Is it going to be just as expensive as living in the city? I'm thinking of maybe living in San Jose, since I'm in Scotts Valley now. Not too far of a move and I could take BART.... am I crazy? Does anyone know if SFSU offers a card for BART or any of the public transportation? When I was at UCSC, they offered it as part of tuition, and we could ride buses for free as long as we had a sticker on our ID. Also, does anyone know if they are letting us take classes in the Summer? I originally applied because I thought it was accelerated, but recently saw in another thread from 2011 that it's only fall and spring semesters! **Also, for facebook- they won't let me make a group unless I have friends to add to it If you want to be part of this new group, send me a message with your name, and I'll start adding you as friends so we can make the group!** -Amanda
  5. I got my acceptance email and letter! WAHOOOOOOOO I'm so freaking excited- I was worried I wouldn't be getting in anywhere. I accepted their offer and paid the deposit. Now to start planning my move and such. I'll be moving from Santa Cruz, so I'm pretty psyched, but also overwhelmed with where to live.... Good luck to everyone on the waitlist! Anyone looking to start a facebook group or anything? I'm not necessarily social, but it might be nice to not have to check this site every time I had a question... :)
  6. Still have not heard anything... Should I call again..?
  7. I'm waiting for any decision at all. I called today, and the woman that answered took my name and phone number so that the admissions secretary could call me back, since she was at lunch. Hopefully I'll find out soon! They'll probably call me at work though.... I hope I see the call so I can answer :icon_roll
  8. I'm still waiting to hear back from these guys. Was told I would hear back from May 1 "at the latest"..... Did you guys hear by email or by letter?
  9. okay, so i finally have an update. i applied back in november, and haven't heard anything since. i kept calling the office, and they would say "2 weeks you'll have a decision" or "your application is currently in committee review", etc. so one day last month, i finally got the guts up to say "you have been telling me 2 weeks for 3 months now!" the lady took my email address down, and within a day i was emailed by someone named lindsay bennett. she said she was sorry and that i would hear in a couple weeks. a month goes by, and i finally email her yesterday asking if she had a decision yet, as other schools are already deciding and i need to plan my future! i got an email today...... i am being invited for an interview! she said she thought someone had already told me..... so yay! life is a little more smooth now. only problem is i live in california, so hopefully they do phone interviews! the only thing i'm worried about was this little sentence: "we have to make arrangements with the nursing staff for the interviews, so we appreciate your patience". so hopefully things go a little smoother and it doesn't turn out i didn't get to interview because they didn't tell me when it was.
  10. Still haven't heard anything from SFSU, but have been doing some research, and have some questions: First, they emailed me and said I could check my waitlist status online, but did not provide a way to do that. Anyone know how to do this? Second, I put FNP for my specialization, but have since seen that they don't offer that for the GMSN. Am I going to be put automatically in either CNS or Admin? Or are they offering FNP now? Third, if I do get in, how bad is it to live across the bay? My boyfriend will be graduating with his masters in teaching, and will hopefully get a job in the area- but it's a teaching job that doesn't pay much. I was looking on craigslist, and it seems to be affordable to live in the Oakland area. People advise I live in the city- but it costs too much! How bad is the commute, and is it worth the saving of money? Thanks guys!
  11. Just thought I would start a thread for the 2012 batch of students- I have not seen one on here yet. I have not been accepted yet, but I am #4 on the wait list. Does anyone know the chances of wait listers getting in? Congrats to those who got in! Time to start getting to know one another ... :)
  12. Hey all- got wait listed for peds... I'm actually excited for that because it's not a straight up denial. Good luck to everyone and congrats to those that are in!
  13. Well I called again today... They said I should hear any day now. She also said if I don't hear by the end of the week I should call again. All she could tell me was that my folder was complete and awaiting review. I guess we will see!
  14. I also am waiting (very patiently) for my letter. I applied a couple months ago and called at the beginning of February. They said it would be mailed 2-3 weeks then, so I was kind of hoping I would have heard something by now. It doesn't seem there is a lot of info on the fall 2012 class.... anyone out there?
  15. Hey guys, just need some advice on NP schools, mostly the direct-entry path for those without an RN license and a bachelors in another field. This question is a bit long-winded, and feel free to skip to the end, but if you're in the mood for some back story, I have got some for you: Ever since I was a child I can remember wanting to be in the medical field. When I was in high school I decided I wanted to be a doctor, and when I got to college (UC Santa Cruz) I continued on that path and became a biology major. This was a bad decision, and I tanked. I got lost in the magic of knowledge and wanted to major in 5 different things. by my 3rd year I had taken a bunch of classes that didn't add up to any major at all (but I did know a lot about planet systems and manatees). I took a year off to figure everything out, and ended up getting some good advice from some doctors I worked for: be a PA or NP. Great! I just needed to finish up my bachelor's if I wanted to be a NP. So I ended up majoring in psychology and finished up with a 2.9 overall GPA. Those first couple of "lost years" as I like to call them, were full of bad grades, but the last two years were all A's -even with a couple quarters of being a research assistant in a graduate division lab. Skip ahead, I have taken the necessary prerequisites at my local community college, and have a 4.0 in those. I have been looking at schools in northern and southern California, as well as on the East Coast (I'm pretty open on location). I have been working in the medical field since I was 16, including being a geriatric caregiver for 4 years, and a child caregiver for 3 years. My question is this: What are my chances of getting in these highly competitive schools? I feel if someone were to just look at my overall undergrad GPA, they would throw my application away. But what I have going for me is this: - experience in the field - a phlebotomy license (with no job, it's rough in this area) - a 4.0 in my prerequisites - a huge improvement from the beginning to the end of my college career - possibly strong letters of recommendation - being a TA in prereq classes - being a research assistant Also, I have been a type 1 diabetic since I was 11 and that is always something I like to bring up because it really gives me reason to want to help other children medically, etc. etc. heartstrings etc. Or should I just plan on waiting 4 years for the local community college to have a spot for me in their ADN program and go for the RN to MSN route? Thanks in advance, guys.
