My life is so hopeless right now!
dear lisa 321, first of all thank you for sharing your feelings with us, nursing community. this is a major step on the way to recovery . i know the pressure become too much to handle and although i don't have much information about your situation but please allow me to try to help a colleague. as you know shortage of nurses is a global issue and you're a rn who is needed not only by your father but also by many people out there who are waiting for your help. what i suggest is you try again and again to find a job. i'm sure it's a matter of giving some effort. try to ask your family members, relatives, friends or your significant other to search with you. i also encourage you to read carefully all comments given by all members of "allnurses.com" who started standing by your side. lisa 321 you're not alone and i believe you came to the right place . please let us hear from you soon to congratulate you on your new job. may god bless you and your father. keep in touch .

As a patient, is it okay to suggest a vein for IV?
I think being a patient doesn't mean you're not a nurse any more. I'ts absolutely ok not only to suggest a vein for IV but also to share with healthcare team members all the necessary measures to help you as a patient.

Is it ok to take a break??
of course it is ok to take a break from your job bruin's mom and no need to feel guilty. now this is not because it was your request but also it was the truth. i believe that you need this break so badly. you are 40 years old and your experience in nursing is only 7 years. now i suggest you go back 7 years ago and think about yourself and all the good things you've experienced, felt, and achieved. remeber bruin's mom that every day is a fresh start. good luck :)

How many hours can a nurse work.
In my country nurses work 7 hr morning shifts, 8 hr afternoon shift, and 9 hr night shifts. This is regulated by the government. Nurses may work 9 hr night shifts and then go and work 7 hr morning shift somewhere else. Now the big question is not how they do it but WHY THEY DO IT? I believe that would open up a whole can of worms!

experienced nurse with anxiety on the job
first of all thank you sfdrn for bringing this issue to light and beginning a discussion in the nursing community. you said that you're an academically-minded person (working on your second master's) and you're certified in your specialty. you also have preceptored several new grads and you're known for cultivating good critical thinking skills in the new grads on your floor. wow. this is amazing! ok so you're armed now and ready for the battle and nothing can bare your existence including those 2 damn clinical skills :). i'm always telling my students clinical skills are just one part of nursing profession. dear sfdrn from the comments i think you realized that you're not alone . you said during emergency you usually end up having to ask for help and this was the right decision. you knew your limitation and you acted as an assertive nurse. . i suggest you talk to the staff development unit in your hospital to arrange some refreshing clinical courses including starting ivs and inserting foley catheters. remember never too late. finally, don't be so hard on yourself and remember the following: "confidence comes not from always being right but from not fearing to be wrong". ~peter t. mcintyre if you hear a voice within you say "you cannot paint," then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced. ~vincent van gogh "always act like you're wearing an invisible crown" nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent. ~eleanor roosevelt

Is being a Male nurse weird?
Hi Daniel, The answer to your question is NO. Being a male nurse is not weird. From my experience as a male nurse in Kuwait I believe that number of male nurses is increasing. This is not only in Kuwait but also in the neighboring countries, namely Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. In fact I could safely say that men in the Middle East have no problem being nurses. Different cultures have different views, one culture's acceptable behaviour is viewed in another culture as taboo. Also, you need to remember Daniel that nursing profession is not a matter of gender issue but it's all about what you want to be. According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN) "nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of health, prevention of illness, and the care of ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping health policy and in patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles". Daniel, at the end of the day it's your choice to be or not to be a nurse. Good luck
